@@30by40 I find myself working hard to convert SketchUp to AutoCAD or trying to determine the best time to detach from SketchUp and start the 2D documents because I have not jumped into Revit. Do you have suggestions for workflow. A suggestion to include in this potential video.

@@boomhover1 hi man, I've been struggling to keep up in school exactly because of that..! SketchUp can't keep up with the rigour of AutoDesk. When one gets to the end of the Project and you want to deliver things by semester-end.. its just unbearable.. right ? I dont know if this will help you in any way... but what i did was.. pause a year.. and see what i could do about it..because i was getting very little sleep..and.. bad grades! The conclusion ? I've decided to ditch BOTH of those tools/softwares (i was never a great fan of either of them, anyway..) and.. switch to ArchiCAD and Rhino+Grasshopper. I actually dropped Adobe as well, and moved to Affinity. It's still too early to tell.. wether or not i am solid with ArchiCAD..but the Affinity tools are brilliant. I was already sketching in 3D from scratch.. with SketchUp ..so.. the transition to Rhino is pretty natural. (its engine with the command lines is similar to AutoCAD btw). When i have a clear idea of what i want to do.. i step into ArchiCAD. it's 'BIM enabled'.. and as you go from push-pull /extruding volumes in 3D, the 2D drawings are automatically generated, in parallel. It's a no brainer. Off course.. it's got a pretty different 'engine' compared to AutoCad..so it's not a perfect breeze all the way. it takes a learning curve, naturally. All in all..though.. i dont regret it. ANY tool is good once you give it enough time to minimally master it. In fact i am thinking of doing my own channel, in order to speak about these matters. 30X40 Design Workshop is a pretty good reference! cheers!

We are mainly taught AutoCAD and SketchUp, but I would love to try other programs. Oh and I'm also interested in 3D modeling, VFX, making my own 3D assets etc. And I'm trying out various different programs ( like a lot lmao ). So yeah.... In conclusion, I want to do: -. @@reboa.i563 Hi dude, Where r u from ? Ok, quite an important moment of your life, it seems, as you want to go with a proper tool, so as to not waste time.. adapting later. That being said.. and i believe you already know this.. once you get the hang of these kinds of languages..they all sort of fall within the same basic approach. Two things : 1. You need to get a good understanding of EXACTLY what both the world of Architecture and the world of Gaming Industry , can offer you. (It's always hard to know what we want, but it really makes a difference to be totally updated on the worlds we want to dwelve into.. Afterall.. those are the things we choose to do and go about in our lives.. right ? More often than not, we project into an area of expertise, what we wish we could do, and paint that same industry with our vail of awesomeness... when in truth.. its not at all like that. You wanna get away from wishful-thinking, and although keeping your dreams very much Alive, stay grounded and focused on the Real !) 2. Decide for yourself if you want to work within the BIG mainstream industry, OR work in a smaller studio.. (There's Pros & Cons in each of them. ) So.. If you decide to going with Architecture.. move into BIM software without looking any further. 3D is a no-brainer, evidently. If you go with the Gaming Industry (and both worlds are not mutually exclusive, off course _ although you will probably choose one of them, sooner or later) try to be sure of what u like the most _ scenery, space, backgrounds, engine... OR character developing, and storytelling. This is fundamental. If i were in your shoes.. (let me say that again! _ if it was ME! ) i'd go with AutoDesk if i aim to stay in a BIG firm. That means AutoCAD, and specially REVIT.. and off course, Maya. 3DS is also very strongly imbedded in the industry..and is a good alternative. As is Cinema 4D. Btw, are you using Mac or PC ? If u prefer a smaller studio/company.. ArchiCAD is pretty great.. or Vectorworks, too. If you like Rhino, the VisualARQ plugIN for Architecture is pretty good too..and you get the plus of being able to work with Grasshopper..if you're into that sort of thing. The only rendering engines i have worked with are Vray and Artlantis.. and both of them are pretty cool. I dont want to talk about stuff that i have no experience with. i have been following Blender for years(!) and this latest 2.8 update looks very important..specially for real time rendering..in 3D Gaming Design. It is actually one of the most solid tools used in the Gaming Industry. I have never used it, properly though.. so i dont know if it would be any good for importing and exporting architecture models. Its not a native CAD tool, thats for sure. What i am pretty sure is that .. since you are still in highschool you are in the best moment of your life to _ Experiment ! And that..it seems.. is what you have been doing. Dont ever lose that. I just dont know enough about you to go any further. It seems you are at a crossroads between those two industries.. Vectorworks Landmark, SketchUp and photoshop are my go to software at the moment but looking to start video editing like yourself, maybe the mac, more research will tell.

Pc, don't get addicted to the apple.

I believe Vectorworks works on MAC as well. So based on the software you used, I would recommend a MAC as video editing is also better on MAC. Unless your main software is like REVIT (which I used) then a PC would be a better way to go. I used Bootcamp before, not the best to go with.

we use both. HP workstations, macbook pro laptops, HP mobile workstations. there isnt a limiting factor. the human side of the equation is what we think is the problem. the best most efficient tool is you. I always joke about it with interns. they ask me what they should buy. I tell them pencil 1.0, paper 1.0. and brain 1.0. some of them get the joke. personnaly i use a macbookpro and a windows desktop. programs are interchangeable so i dont feel any diff. oh yeah one thing i forgot a pc is a mac and a mac is a pc. its still all silicon which will crash at 3am 4 hours before a deadline for no reason... :0)

The surface studio cpu is quite terrible it’s a i7 6700hq which is a MOBILE cpu and not even a desktop cpu and even worse it is last gen stuff! It’s still sky lake and not kabylake or coffee lake which means it is pretty outdated by today’s standards and even a low end i5 8400 beats the i7 6700hq by an order of magnitude. The gpu is btw a gtx 980m, a mobile chip again and not even a modern pascal architecture chip this gpu is not trash but it is worse than a gtx 1060. I wouldn’t recommend the surface studio for anything that needs serious computing power. All in ones in general tend to be quite overpriced. You should get a tower pc and buy a separate monitor instead. If space is an issue there are really good small form factor PCs like the MSI trident or vertex. Even the 900 dollar model with i5 8400 and gtx 1060 would perform a little better and you can use the money you save to buy like 3 high end 5k monitors or a new car.

Maybe this is a late but, I would definitely upgrade the storage, I'm a mechanical engineering student using Solidworks (by using Windows on my Mac) and the 256 gb is mostly filled just with MacOS, Windows, and Solidworks. In terms of performance, I'm able to use it for small parts for assignments, but when it comes to large assemblies, I just use the computer lab.

it's tricky...details should support the concept (that idea in itself is hard to comprehend)...a good place to start is by looking at how other architects do this. look at buildings by the masters and notice that they have a cohesive aesthetic...this is because they apply an attitude about how materials are joined to every assembly. have you seen this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ApaypVr_1EE.html

Get to a construction site and observe how things are put together. Comprehend what goes in first and how each step layers onto the next. This will give you a better understanding of how to detail and what defines the various components of a structure.

As a first year student, your concern for details shows promise, Daniel, that you will be a serious professional architect. The other comments here are valid. Perhaps the overall principle is to remember that you are an architect, not an engineer or a contractor. This simply means your brain most plausibly works well with an overall concept first. Then, obviously, you "prove" or invalidate your concept by making it real in detail - & by detail, it means how to build the work i.e. construction detailing, how to put the building(s) together, with real-world materials in (the client's) real time, for what he/she can afford to pay you. If good, go. If not, do over again - until good. The engineer's brain typically starts with a familiar construction detail, or set of them, linking these to others to make a plausible structure, with associated systems for climate, security, acoustics, etc. He/she builds these details into an overall concept - then, perhaps, steps back & considers it for its (client's) purpose. If good, go. If not....etc. The architect or engineer approach is just different, not better; each complements the other. A contractor, in effect, strives to build (for client) what he/she is given in the form of a design, with intended budget & time frame that the client says Yes to. Of course, in real world projects, we all talk to each other, as early in the project as possible - so that all of us as stakeholders contribute to a good result. As a student, it can be valuable to get critiques & feedback from working professionals in all related fields: real estate developers, building inspectors, janitors, window manufacturers, all who know for real whether a building or ensemble of structures work well. With respect, I would not worry too much about how current or historical architects worked. Either their technology or psychology may differ too much from yours - no sense copying something that isn't authentic to you, your culture, or your values. The one thing you could do that is better than anything else we have discussed, is: Leave school for a couple of years, & go work construction - with your hands, your back & your brain directly involved, you will return to design with strong experience to focus on what matters, & what matters to you, as an architect. Your question about "...the details:" Details in architecture are either construction elements, or aesthetic elements. Once you know construction, your talent in integrating the forms & appearance of buildings will allow you to go to the next level, which is to make the built result of your design work as authentically beautiful as possible. In this, you will be reaching people's emotions, individually, & also their sense of communal values, in a way that architecture is uniquely able to express. You will find it easier to ignore novelty, or academic fads, or the temptation to use digital picture-making instead of strong design in your work. So, worth repeating, Daniel: As a first year student, your concern for details shows promise that you will be a serious professional architect. We wish you the best.

Intel, amd hast just become a serious contender with Raizen, but software is slow to catch up in compatibility. If you are employed go intel if you are a student go amd save money.

agree my friend...i did try to steer clear of the PC/MAC debate b/c it can be so polarizing...as I mentioned below: strong opinions, loosely held. pc/mac...both are tools for us to do our best work, right? the integrations I talk about near the end of the video (why I'm now using macs) have real value to my business though. so for us to be truly agnostic and weigh things equally those have to count for something. the upfront cost differences between systems can be made up in less than a week of billable time so from a business investment standpoint it's small numbers. and, some people want an audi, some a maserati. thanks for commenting...appreciate it...

Yea, I love my iphone, hate the proprietary aspects of beings "it's own". My windows builds ALWAYS outweigh the comparison because as the old saying ... Better built than bought. Now hence to each their own. I've used linux(Fedora and Red hat), windows, Mac and even google chrome books... So it's all about the quality of which one seeks and how their life is impacted when using their choice. Your comment wins man lol
