Ask This Old House host Kevin O’Connor explores the best options for home fireplaces. (See steps below.)

Expert assistance was provided by Alan Davis, general manager of Yankee Fireplace and Grill City [www.yankeefireplace.com/]. Alan describes several fireplaces options including a traditional wood-burning fireplace. Alan says this should be for ambience only as it is only 15 percent efficient. A gas log is another option, but is equally as inefficient as a traditional wood-burning fireplace at 15 percent. However, there is zero clean up involved. A better option would be a gas-fueled insert into an existing fireplace. That runs at 70-80 percent efficiency. For those without an existing fireplace, there's a gas zero-clearance fireplace. That can be built into almost any wall and exhaust directly out of an exterior wall. Alan also shows Kevin a standing gas-fueled oven. That can be placed almost anyway and vented through an exhaust pipe. A pellet stove is fueled by sawdust pellets and runs on electricity. It's convenient for someone looking to burn wood and more efficient than a traditional wood-burning fireplace. However, if you already have a gas option Alan recommends you stick with gas. Finally, Alan shows Kevin several electric fireplace options. These fireplaces produce some heat, but are primarily for ambience. They do not need any venting.
Steps for How to Choose a Home Fireplace:
1. Alan describes several fireplace options, including a traditional wood-burning fireplace. This should just be for ambience as it is only 15% efficient.
2. A gas log is as inefficient as a traditional wood-burning fireplace, at 15%, but requires zero cleanup.
3. A better option would be a gas-fueled insert in an existing fireplace. That runs at 70% to 80% efficiency.
4. For those without an existing fireplace, there’s a gas zero-clearance fireplace that can be built into almost any wall and will exhaust directly out of an exterior wall.
5. Alan also shows Kevin a standing gas-fueled oven. That can be placed almost anywhere and vented through an exhaust pipe.
6. A pellet stove is fueled by sawdust pellets and runs on electricity. It’s convenient for someone looking to burn wood, and more efficient than a traditional wood-burning fireplace. However, if you already have a gas option, Alan recommends you stick with gas.
7. Finally, Alan shows Kevin several electric fireplace options. These produce some heat but are primarily for ambience. They do not need venting.

I know they're super inefficient but man you can't beat the smell and sound of a real wood fireplace. I have one and I build a massive fire every Christmas just to make it feel that much more special.

I agree! We have heated the entire house with our wood burning fireplace. Mind you we are in Florida and it doesn't get that cold but still it is gorgeous and smells like home. I wouldn't have anything but wood burning. Great video.

I know several people who have the electric fireplaces (i.e. glorified space heaters) and love them! Since I live in Florida there is not a lot of demand for fireplaces, but the electric ones still give the ambiance of a fire without the heat.

They missed one: wood burning insert. Which in my mind would be best if you have a pre-existing wood burning fireplace, and a natural gas furnace. So you have 2 potential heat sources available to you.

Nice video wery informative, but there is another fireplace which is connected with central heating and there is the coil in it which is connected to the cold wather line.On that wather line must be installed on a special valve to cool down the fire place if the temperatule increase to 95 degrees.In Europe we use the fireplace as the second source of heat ,gas boiler is the main source of heat in this case. I like to watch your videos they are amazing.

Three things I doubt I'll see in my lifetime - graphene batteries, a balanced federal budget and a gas fireplace that looks like a real fireplace. Every time I see one, I think GROOVY BABY time to play some Burt Bacharach and roll out the faux bear skin rug. I loved him laughing at the most rediculous ones.

Great video but you never mentioned the ventless gas fireplace option (not sure the location of where the video was produced ventless option could be against code for that location). Ventless fireplaces are 100% efficient. Besides the elevated humidity wand obvious carbon dioxide concerns what are the cons against this option?

BRIEF NOTE: IN CALIFORNIA, CHECK W/THE DEPT OF BLDG INSPECTION FIRST BEFORE ANY WORK STARTS JUST IN CASE. A ELECTRICAL PERMIT(MAYBE) MAY BE REQUIRED FIRST BEFORE ANYWORK CAN LEGALLY BEGIN. ALSO RESEARCH PRICES TOO. REMEMBER TO BE AN INFORMED CUSTOMER. USUALLY PRICES CAN BE BETWEEN $5-7 THOUSAND DOLLARS, POSSIBLY MORE, DEPENDING ON WHAT STATE YOU LIVE IN.

@JonT1137
@JonT1137 5 лет назад
Ronnie Emerson well that’s a tough question. But if you like the look of a wood fire, I would suggest a wood stove. There are a variety of styles, they can be quite efficient and create a lot of heat if needed

Ok guys, I have a gas fireplace vent type A. It burns gas and pulls inside air for combustion, becuse this unit also backs to a back deck, id like it to pull outside air in for combustion and be both gas or wood burning. Can that be done in the same space id also want to have a blower unit to force heated air into the room.
@adamguymon7096
@adamguymon7096 5 лет назад
It would be nice to have the ability to have the different flames turn the color you want the flame? It would be nice if the flame could be color changing so no matter what mood you are in you can set a theme to your desire. The key is to make the unit so it will use less electricity than a LED Light Bulb. Make a unit that can produce better heat than any Gas of wood/coal fire place but use electricity and put a battery back up system in that will power this unit for 65 day's straight on high non stop on back up battery power.

I have a fireplace that is like the first one but its empty at the top and empty at the bottom but it has like fan controls around it to push the air. I'm guessing this is more then 15% efficient.

Lol he said nobody uses a wood fireplace to actually heat. It did fine for centuries. 19th century homes always had at least a couple fireplaces. If you want to burn gas get a gas furnace, 90+ efficiency.

The problem with a sealed gas or electric fireplace is that you can't pull out a flaming log and rampage throughout the neighborhood, intimidating your neighbors and generally sowing chaos for extended periods of time.

Sounds like the presenter isn't interested in the electric fireplace insert (or didn't think that would be a heat source) and didn't ask the energy efficiency question as he did in all other fireplace options. It would have been great to have a comparison between the electric fireplace insert vs gas fireplace insert. Safety aside, which heat source is more energy efficient?
