Love the Springer that is hanging around you these days. I’ve got a 4 yr old Westie and a 1 year old Springer. Would have loved a lab but have back problems so a Springer, being smaller and lighter, was a better fit. My dogs have totally different temperaments. Both are fantastic ambassadors for well behaved, balanced dogs that are welcome anywhere. I approached “training “ (learning by living life as you’d say) them by acknowledging their breed strengths and challenges and setting realistic goals. Exercise for both was key. Love your videos; I share your “montessori “ approach; it works!

Stonnie, thank you so much for this awesome video! Finances are a bit of an issue at the moment, but I do have the dedication and time necessary for training, and a really awesome and mostly obedient training dog. I come to your videos, and they have helped me tremendously. Mostly to understand from the dog’s perspective, and to pay him more with high value treats and reward incentives, so we’re communicating together rather than me being a gestapo, and also not too permissive. We are getting him started young with exposure to lots of different environments, and it has been made really enjoyable so far. Thanks so much for your awesome videos and insight!

As one of the 1:1 clients home trainer, I agree 100% with your points! The most important part of my client form is “what are your challenges and WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS” If they come back with “I want high level agility “ or “Bird hunting” I politely let them know I’m not the trainer for them and help them find a more appropriate trainer. Goals and skills need to be aligned.

As my golden retriever gets older, 9 months now, I am realizing how much I depended on my mentor dogs with past Goldens I have raised. I have wild open spaces to give him lots of adventures and body building, but having a well trained dog to socialize with is the missing ingredient. I can train using your methods, but this video has given me ideas on how to fill that void. I wish I could bring him to you, but Arizona is a long ways away.. thank you very much for all you do for us.

Heh, I trained my first Lab from a book! Working gundog (Lab). Mostly used for picking up on 150-300 bird driven shoot days, and does some beating & dogging-in the boundaries of the land we shoot over (basically an all-rounder / gamekeeper's dog). Someone on a shoot offered £8k for him when he was three. I didn't sell. ...but yeah, Labs from decent lines are born half-trained anyway so that does make for a bit of easy-mode. Great video Stonnie.

I could listen to you talk dog all day - I love you realistic outlook for real life. I got kicked out of a rescue I was volunteering for because I made the suggestion that besides the intake form we should have an in-depth questionnaire to determine what kind dog would be suitable for their lifestyle. Are they sedentary or active or anything in between. First dog or experienced. They were horrified that I would suggest a rescue should fit into the families life. The expectations when you get a rescue you will turn your life inside out to accommodate the rescue. You have to sign a contract promising there would be no corrections and training and walking only on a harness even 100 lb husky cross that is bred to pull and been running loose for years. You also have to use their approved trainers. It was so frustrating. The supervisor suggested I did not have the mindset for rescue.

And sadly those dogs that have behavioral issues have a great chance of eventual BE.
@SleepyBunny4BetterSleep
@SleepyBunny4BetterSleep Год назад
It’s strange because the better the fit, the happier the dog and the humans. The mindset of these people is fantastical. Any dog not well socialized and fearful “has probably been abused “. And then instead of socializing it they lock it in a yard and cross the street when walking it and another dog approaches. Very backward thinking.

The saddest training situation I see in the outer Atlanta suburbs are people buying a cool looking, trendy, protection dog, like a Malinois or GSD, then fail to train it.

Not just Atlanta. Somebody in Central Texas told a 71-year-old frail lady that she should have a Malinois puppy because it would keep her safe. Don't recall how much she paid -- around $1,500. Within four months she had a medical emergency and her nephew was looking to rehome it. Standard poodles seem to be trending in popularity. If only that would continue.

I was excited about a beautiful facility near me that trains dock diving, but I definitely 'failed' their intake quiz. They enforce strict rules, like "no nose to nose contact, because we don't want your dog getting bullied". It's probably so they can include unfriendly dogs, which is nice, but not exactly fun. My pup is good by most people's standards, but I'll admit I do not control her every sniff. She approaches dogs calmly for sniffs, and some how calculates whether her next action is to play or depart. The nose knows.

I agree 100% about letting your dog off leash more often, walking the dog more, and just in general giving your dog more exercise. My question is this: what if your Labrador puppy still hasn't had all his shots so can't go to a dog park, and there is no other place to safely let him off leash? We do use a 30' long line so he can get away and play on his own, but he then ends up eating everything in sight, which we fear will make him sick. We don't live on a farm so off leash just isn't safe. Is your advice just to not get a working breed? (but it's obviously too late for us)

Awesome stuff Stonnie. I have a gsd and have done a bunch of training with a couple different trainers. None with your methodology but I don’t know that it would work for my dog because from what we’re told she needs strict structure. I do btw love that vest you have it looks like a Filson or something with waxed cotton or tin cloth material.

Before l found your channel l had some doozies! One dog training chain guaranteed results for $1000. (I had a coonhound and a chihuahua) Basically they filled tin cans full of pennies and threw it on the floor whenever the dog did something wrong. Though she never had before, after one day my coonhound kept trying to climb the 6’ fence trying to get out of my one acre property. The guy said “stop the program “ . The money was not refunded. I had a “trainer” (anyone can call themselves a trainer “ who would give my chihuahua treats when it barked at her because the trainer was intimidated. 😂 But not so funny because now my dog barks at people to try to get treats. You have been a blessing to me and my dogs! 😁

Hey stonnie! I have been watching your videos for over a year and have raised a JRT with your help. I'm wondering how to make my dog more comfortable in a new environment. Should I give her treats, play with her or just let her hang out in the environment. She gets so nervous that she doesn't even explore or sniff anymore, she just walks on the path. I need your advice cause we're going to the seaside in a couple of weeks. Thanks for videos and all advice.

Stonnie, where do you keep the dogs when they aren’t running around with you? Is it better to have a puppy in it’s kennel in the house with you or let it be outdoors in a fenced in yard when you can’t be with it? She's VERY large and protective and needs some leash manners (she has been part of a bonded pack that has almost always run free since she was a pup); would it be worth my time to contact you about her?
