Top: 1. Genera 4:39 (overall best no overtones) 2. Genera HD 12:15 ( med-high overtones) 3. Genera HD Dry 2:35 (low overtones) 4. Hybrid 3:57 (for piccolo no overtones) 5. Hydraulic Blue 7:25 (low overtones) 6. Hydraulic Black 13:37 (med overtones) 7. Onyx 15:00 (high overtones)
Yeah I almost think the Genera takes out too much. Am I the only one who finds it strange the Genera takes out more tone than the Genera HD or HD Dry? How does that work? Drums are weird sometimes.... In this video I actually feel like those hydraulics came out really well. Very nice combo of control but still with some tone. I actually expected them to sound "boxier." Those things are nice.
This really was an impressive video/videos. Sure lessons are good and extremely useful..... With that said there are lots of them. No on has done a video like this that I have ever seen. You truly have done something amazing here. More videos like these with toms, bass drum, and other brands of drum heads are just what the drum community needs and will always need. Once they are made I don't see how someone else will ever have the need to try to duplicate. There will be no need and you will not only have the first ones ever made but the ONLY ones!!! Thank you!
THANK YOU FOR THIS. There are way too many videos that poorly compare all kinds of musical equipment by neglecting to keep constant a bunch of important factors. You guys are awesome.
This series is a fantastic idea. I completely understand that only Evans heads are covered since you're an Evans artist. Would it be possible to do a series like this but with a Remo artist?
I'm not sure... The guys at Evans are so easy to work with and they really support what we do at Drumeo. I have never heard from anyone at Remo so I'm not sure they even know we exist.
Drumeo Common Remo! Get a rep to call Jared up!. I personally like the sounds of the clear Remo Emperors and the Ebony Emperors. But the kick has to be an Evans Emad. Will you be doing a comparison video of the kick batter heads next? I've always wanted to hear the difference between the Emad1, Emad2, and Gmad.
Evans heads are generally higher quality than most other brands, so I'm perfectly fine with them doing just Evans if those are the guys that are helping them out :)
I always thought 2 ply heads were best for playing metal and heavy rock, but wow the Genera sounds really good! I think I'll try that next. And thank you for this! This video is exactly what I needed since I don't have the money to buy every head and try it out.
The hydraulic black head surely sounds amazing along with the genera hd. The have the perfect amount of resonance right after the hit with makes it sound amazing. Thanks for this video Jared ! Made me win time instead of having to go to a music store first to try the heads..
I think my favourite is between the G14 and the Power Centre Reverse, which is probably a good thing because I'm using an Aquarian Texture Coated Dot at the moment (which is the equivalent of the Power Centre Reverse), and I was thinking about trying a G14 next anyway :)
Just wanted to say that this is an awesome video! As someone who has been playing for almost 10 years, I gained a ton of insight and learned a lot. Thanks guys! I know that video could not have been easy to make. Your work is appreciated!
Just adding a touch of extra knowledge from experience: the difference between the power center and the power center reverse dot is that the standard has higher overtones (kinda funky sounding) and the reverse dot has lower overtones (more rock and roll). The Hydraulic series heads have air bubbles that sound different (worse) than the head so if you hit them by accident your playing can sound a little inconsistent. The EC1 Reverse Dot tends to be way wetter than it sounds in the video at most tuning (maybe not the so much the one he used) but I found it tended to need dampening for any tuning lower than the demonstration in the video. The hybrid series drum heads are made for marching/field drums but there is one available that's a little more tailored for drum set, it is coated (as opposed to just having texture from the fibers), is nicer sounding at lower than marching tunings and is slightly more durable (due to the coating) so it can withstand even harder hits on even lower tunings. This is just my personal experience, I've owned one of each of those heads (plus an onyx but it sounded dead on) so you can take my word for this. However if anyone has had any contradicting experiences then please reply with them. I don't mind being wrong (I'm just trying to help people only have to buy one head to get what they're looking for and save money).
Yeah, the Genera HD surprised me. I would have never even considered a two ply head with a muffle ring but it sounded great on the vid. I'm gonna try that on my other snare for when I want something a tad darker. Thanks Jared!
I love my Genera Dry. It's the head I use on both my snares, metal and wood, along with the 300 reso head. It cuts really well live and in mixes and is super easy to tune up really high or low
I've been a player of Evans Drum Heads ever since I started playing 11 years ago, and out of all my heads that have come and gone, I still have an Onyx Black from 2008 that I put on my snare for studio work along with an HD Dry, and an EC1 for live playing.
Thank you so much for this demo! I actually like the seperate videos uploaded with more info on each head. Turns out the head I play is NOT my favorite head demoed in your videos! Can't wait to try the Genera HD dry!! Thank again! Very helpful!
i’m finally working towards upgrading my heads from the ones my drums came with. this video is super helpful, but i can’t imagine how long this took to film!
I love this video. I purchased a Dialtune snare drum (awesome) and aside from using a dial to change tuning in mere seconds, it allows you to change the head in under a minute. I've got a G1, Calftone and HD Genera Dry already. Every head in the video sounds pretty darn good to me. Hopefully I won't let my collection get out of hand but I can't make any guarantees.
Well these are raw sounds, no dampening or over tone control. The oil layer is designed for that reason. But, the Reverse Power center sounded good as well as the Onyx. Especially for hard music. The Hydraulic sounds great on kicks.
I remember an individual who chose to use a certain snare drum as his primary snare that he loved but musically it sounded completely out of place with any songs he played to. Other people approached me about this problem. It was a learning experience for me to remember that the snare drum should fit the music even if I like other types better. Love your program and appreciate your help.
Holy guys, thank you so much for this! That's an incredible amount of effort to put in for a product demo. You won't find this anywhere else but on drumeo, fantastic content.
I have the onyx on my snare and it's fantastic. It actually made me switch brands from Remo to Evans. It rings when I want it to, or if I want less I toss on a moongel and its gone. Beautiful head, unique look, great sound.
One thing I struggled with on your video was listening to them and trying to hear them without the ringing. I absolutely hate ringing, especially in the confined space I have to work with. But it was super cool of you to do all of them, you narrowed my search down quite a bit. You're the best, Drumeo !!
Thanks a lot for doing this! I am going to try the Power Center because of this video. I was raised with and used Remo for 16 years. I tried Evans once 4 years ago and never went back to Remo. The durability is twice as good as Remo for the coated heads from my experience.
...I've used the Evans Hybrid for a while now with a bit of dampening, like moongel, and ohmygod bruh- its SOOO GOOD! I thank you, Drumeo, for showing me this head.
Thank you for this video! Can you do one for toms, too? Would love to hear different cymbals - I know that would be a huge task because there are so many, but that would be awesome and helpful!! I am so freaking picky with what I hear.
This video helped me tremendously Jared. Thanks for making it. I can't afford to buy everything Evans makes to suite my playing, thanks to you I found the Onyx to be the best snare head I've ever played! Before this video I had to settle for what I was already playing. When will the Tom video be released?
I just ordered all new heads for my kit on cyber monday. I got a free Genera HD Dry for ordering G2 Coated tom heads. This made me really excited to give it a try! :D
I personally have the Genera HD and I absolutely love the sound of it. I thought this video was pretty cool, finding out how all their snare drum heads sound.
I am using Evans Genera HD Snare Heads for years and I think that these are the best sounding Snare heads, but I also liked the EC 1 reversed Dot in this demo!
This was so helpful! I have a beginners Rogue drum set and want to upgrade all the heads from the original stock heads. I figured I’d start with the snare. I feel so much more knowledgeable about what I like! I’ve been a little frustrated at how a lot of drum videos say to just get what sounds good to you/tune your drums to the pitch you like, but I have little to no knowledge of what actually sounds GOOD let alone what my personal preference is. So these comparison videos are opening up my whole world! I liked the Genera HD Dry and the Hydraulic Black best. Now to decide which one to buy first!
This is the most useful lesson I have seen in a long time. It helps me especially as I am looking for a new snare head. I bought a new kit and the stock heads suck.
One that sounds like a total beast for metal music is Evans Black Chrome, although it's not technically a "snare head". A ton of volume and very nice crack that cuts through the guitar wall easily with good definition. Not suitable for lighter music or brushes, but for heavier stuff...it's a killer! Waiting for the tom series, as those are next to be updated on my kits. Thanks for these and props for being featured on the front page of Evans!
Really helpful!! Wanted to hear the Level 360, but I love the HD Dry sound. Sharp attack and very little ringing overtones. Sweet! I’ve been a Remo man for years but the guys at Studio Instrument Rentals in San Francisco have turned me on to Evans. I’m liking your heads.
I really liked the Genera it was a nice full sound that didn't ring out too much. Right now I'm using the Remo White Suede on my snare and it gives a full sound but rings a little too much. I use remo ebony's on my toms and use white coated on the resignation side. And I use ebony's on my bass and floor tom as well. I also have a 14" zbt hihat, a 16" zbt crash, an 18" K custom crash ride, and a 20" zbt ride.It all sounds amazing except my snare which is probably the most important. Thanks for making this video Jared.
This is a GREAT video!. I listened and studied with intent (and headphones)...It helped me a TON... For me...Genera HD for the win!. Just beat out the G2, which is pretty ringy, the ST, with still just a little too much ring, and the HD dry which is just a little too dry...for me anyway. The Genera HD's got just the right amount of everything with just a little bit of ring, lots of power and good bottom. Stoked! 🎶🎵🔥💥
It might just be me, but they all sound very similar, non of them have much in the way of low end, they're all very treble heavy.. I've always played Remo PS3's and never had a problem, but thought I'd check out this video to see if I was missing anything. I bet this took a looooong time to film so cheers for that! :)
G1 coated and Onyx sounded exactly the same to me. Also both of those seem to alow me to here the most ring from the shell than the others. That way a tone ring could tame it on some songs and no tone ring at all for wide open sound for other songs. The most versatile. ALSO 30 years ago when I tried the Hydraulic heads I remebered they had a thud dead sound but here it didn't sound bad at all. I may try one once more after hearing it on this video. My thoughts back then were that the Hydraullic heads were only good for crap drum with bad un-even bearing edges
I currently play on a Power Center reverse dot. But I'm gonna try out a Genera. It sounds really freaking good. Not too dry and the ring response is well balanced IMO
The Generas are perfect for what im looking for... thank you so much! Just recently got a gretsch kit and im looking at changing all the heads. My snare heads pretty worn out already.
I switched to Evans heads years ago (from Remo) and the sound quality was so much better. Unfortunately, I found that after two weeks I couldn't get a good sound out of them (especially the toms). I have not dared to try Evans again as I have never been in a position to replace heads that frequently. I now play Aquarian as I find these a great balance between sound and durability.
Drumeo , you're all guys doing such a great job. I've got my new Evans Ec Reverse Dot snare drum head, because of this video. Nice explanation. A very good tool for drummers. Greetings from Argentina ! 💪🏻
I liked the G1 and Onyx. I like the tone of G1...i like some ring in sound...you can do nuances and such. That particular drum really went well with the Onyx head.
my suggestion is put some interactive aspects to the video.. so what that means is by the use of annotations have a time table at the bottom or top of the video for every single snare drum head so people can compare certain heads directly by pushing annotations, instead of searching exactly for the right time and mistakingly listening to other drum heads. good video btw! thanks!!
I think you should do a tom head demo... well 3 toms, with every head and two heads a pop would take forever. So maybe consider pick a common size, and demoing all the batters on that one size. And either use a single reso head (constant), or no reso head for all of the tests. sorry if this is a huge work load.
Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video man! I just got a job at a drum department and I have to learn all of this stuff so this is Gold at its finest! Thank you!
I've had an Onyx head for over a year now, and the coating is just now coming off! Anyway, I'm certain that this took quite a bit of time to put together, so thanks so much for this Drumeo folks! :)
Thanks for the comparison vid Jared. I prefer the g2 coated out of all of them. They all sounded a bit choked though... maybe its the mix. Best Regards
