We all want to play our favourite songs. Well, what happens if we know the chords for a song but we don't know the strumming pattern? This lesson will show you the key ingredients you need to find and choose a strumming pattern for a particular song. You'll learn about the important building blocks like tempo and time signature but you'll also see that once you have those in place, there are ways to fill in the blanks according to your own style and feel of the song.

I'm so glad that you said that strumming patterns can be "up to us", because that's what's always confused me. So many teachers seem to be stuck to one particular strumming pattern, and that's what they want us (students) to use. It should be arbitrary. Thanks. I like to do what feels right for me at the time, as long as I'm in time and at the correct tempo.
@ivanokmunoz
@ivanokmunoz 3 года назад
Teachers do that so you can play along with other guitarists. You need to have the ability to follow a particular strumming pattern as well as to made your own patterns

Thanks for the comment, Stephen. As a teacher I should emphasize that it’s important to learn lots of different patterns (so you have a wide range to choose from) but then begin implementing your own style / strumming into the music. Learn and then let loose! 😃🎸

Strumming it's difficult at times,for me . When I change chords and get faster I loose the pattern I am doing and land up more downs or up strums. 😅😢😂 Any advice.....

I played guitar as a teenager (loooong time ago) and did everything you teach here, but I didn't know it was a "thing". I wasn't aware of BPM, tempo or strumming patterns, and I never owned a metronome; it all just happened by itself as I listened to music, tried to copy my rock heroes and became more proficient (I hung up my guitar at a very low level of proficiency). Fast forward to 2020 and I'm looking at YT videos, thinking I might try my arthritic hands at guitar again, confined as I am to my house by the Corona pandemic and developing cabin fever. Having you explain what I was doing naturally back then confuses the hell out of me now. It's like learning Greek without knowing Latin first (I'm not sure that makes sense, but it sounds right). Had I known that there already was a system in place to my madness I might have continued on and who knows what it might have led to. Lost opportunities... Thanks for the lesson!

@@GuitarCoachingOnline I also hope Lar's hands are ok (I also have osteoarthritis with nodes on the finger joints.) My comment. When you are asked "can I learn and play guitar being an "older" person? Rather than give the standard "anyone can do it at any age" be real. You need to say "it depends on the status of the health of your hands" "Do you have arthritis" "A lot will depend on your ability to operate your fingers independently and your ability to maintain finger strength with your fingers spread" Then there is stamina. It does take stamina to strum vigorously. Anyone can learn and play at any age but there will be limits on what a person with degraded hands can do. 40+ years working as an auto mechanic have taken a toll on my hands but I am having a blast playing the guitar (just got a Fishman Loudbox Mini to go with my Martin D16E) So much fun playing to a backing track (and it helps speed learning)
@GuitarCoachingOnline
@GuitarCoachingOnline 4 года назад
That's a good point, Dan. Definitely good to be aware of any physical limitations like you mentioned. I'm glad to hear you're still playing - and, I'm slightly jealous of your setup. The Martin combined with the Loudbox must sound killer! Thanks for your comment.
@danr5105
@danr5105 4 года назад
@@GuitarCoachingOnline Yes the hand limitations acknowledgement. This is in contrast to the many articles I have read that follow the lines of "quit complaining about hand issues, everyone has them and everybody finds a way to work past them" About "my setup" The Martin and the Fishman cost me right at 2000.00 for both. Yes they do sound fantastic together. If I was a parent (I am 66 never had kids) I would not hesitate for one second (OK,don't spend the rent/mortgage/food money) to give my child, maybe even as young as 10 years old such equipment to let them learn with. What I am getting at is getting real good equipment into the hands of people that have that incredible learning ability for most anything shown by the youth. I am not trying to make a parent "stress" over not being able to do this but what a great head start it would be. I don't know if is common with just Martin guitars but as soon as I started "picking and strumming" that guitar in the store I could really feel the vibrations in the body. The strings actually feel soft to strum and fret I can do simple 3 string "barring" (like using one finger for the "A" chord or 2 string barring on a "cheater" F chord. I can't do this on my first guitar,Yamaha FG830.

Hey Chris, thanks for your question! The app is called GuitarToolkit. I use it all the time and comes with some great features (tuner, metronome, chord diagrams, etc.) Definitely worth getting!

Is it the strumming pattern or it's the counts / tempo one should learn ?

Hey Manoj, both are great to know! Learning the pattern gives you the form and learning the counts / tempo gives you the foundation.
