Keep a log book of all your miles when not towing going to a load and between loads..... Also if unable to tow and the wife has to fallow (School buses, Bob tail trucks, lift gate straight trucks, or a small motorhome without a hitch........ They off set your income at tax time by $0.54 or $0.57 a mile..... But you MUST have odometer numbers if audited !..... This is a must..... I have a public accountant do my taxes and wind up claiming "0" income with miles, daily food and housing allowance,...... KEEP ALL RECEIPTS !! for your accountant !

2004 Hyundai Elantra GT. 4 door, 5 speed. I would advise people to stay away from a 2 door if possible. You will be going in and out of the back seat a lot. Make sure your ball has at least a 1" shank. Try to go with a rear wheel drive if you can. Mine is front wheel and sometimes a sharp turn causes a problem. Great video. I'd also be happy to help answer questions if I can. Stay sharp out there.

+Punxsyjumper Thank you so much for your input! I hope people listen to your advice about the 2-door. I didn't even think about that!

How does insurance work on a tow car? Does it have to be 'commercial' insurance? Thanks!

Check with your driveaway company and insurance, but I BELIEVE standard insurance is fine.

buddy of mine took out the backseat and made a bed into the trunk and is happy with it. Answered a question-from a previous post about using a dolly- about the flat tow, as I was planning to use a dolly. Good job sharing your experiences.

I have seen people do that, too. Something like an HHR panel van, I think. Very few of those exist :)

None of the Drive Away companies allow tow dollies. Flat tow only allowed. And most require a weight under 3,500 pounds - and means subcompacts like Ford Fiesta and Chevy Sonic.

What about a Honda element camper? And why is a pickup OK but not a minivan? Minivans aren't that big.
@LetsGoRoadTrippin
@LetsGoRoadTrippin 6 лет назад
Not 100% sure. My guess is that a minivan probably weighs more. You can always ask when you are talking to the Driveaway companies

Awesome videos! I am just starting to look into drive away for a career option. You seem to dead head it back home after a delivery. Why wouldn't you try to find a job near your drop off to drive a motorhome back by your home? Is there just not much of an opportunity for that?

I was finding rides all over when I first started,and that is when I made the most money. I was hardly home, which was fine for me at the time. I had a few life changes that made me want to be home more.

What about a Jeep Wrangler, I've been towing mine behind my motorhome for about 5 years and it doen't add mileage when towed. Still have less the 50,000 miles on it.

Here is a comment from another person: Clint McCain Nice video--thanks for sharing! I called 3 places and they all recommended Blue Ox towbars (blueox.com/recreational-commercial-flat-towing/ which is what I ended up going with; RoadMaster is another popular brand). I went with an RV dealer to provide and install my system. For break-away braking systems and braking assist, there's Brake Buddy (www.brakebuddy.com/) and RoadMaster (I went with my installer's recommendation roadmasterinc.com/products/braking/invisibrake/index.html) Show less

I've been thinking about doing this and using my 2007 Ford Ranger. I noticed you had a 1st gen. Ranger. Was it a 1983 or 1984? It's sad that Ford quit making the Ford Ranger in 2011 to boost the sale of their F150.
@LetsGoRoadTrippin

I think it was a 1983. I wish they still made the ranger

No, sorry, you can't tow a vehicle larger than a medium car. There might be a company out there that will let you, but it would be few and far between, and quite possibly as rare as a unicorn.

Crap; I just bought 2013 Prius and I love it. Most cars are going to CVT transmissions. Why can't I use a dolly? Is it because you can't back them up? I'm a former truck/limo driver considering doing RV driveway. If I trade the Prius I'm going to lose $4K or more because I paid all the money retail for an accident free CPO car under warranty which I expected to keep for years. I guess I can go buy some POS with a stick.
@LetsGoRoadTrippin
@LetsGoRoadTrippin 6 лет назад
Bummer. Check that link for the cars you can tow. If the PDF is outdated, just go to the site it is hosted on and get the latest version. Using a dolly is a pain anyway, just more equipment to deal with. FYI, I have a 2018 Hyundai Elantra 6 sp Auto that gets over 40 mpg on the highway (I don't tow it, since I don't drive anymore). You can flat tow those with manual transmissions, I think. I don't even think it voids the warranty (DOUBLE CHECK THAT WITH Hyundai)

I've heard the driveshaft of Honda CRVs can be disengaged for towing from inside the vehicle without having to crawl under. Some shops can also set something up in other vehicles but can cost $1-2k maybe more these days.

+Robert Fiore, Ventriloquist? it is not a federal law. there are a handful of states that require the brakes in a flat towed car.
@gonecamper3510
@gonecamper3510 7 лет назад
The tow car must be under 3,500 pounds. That is too light to require a brake system, and you can't even tell it's behind the motor home.

Thanks for the video. I'm looking into this type of work. Ironically I have 2 of the vehicles you listed. I hadn't thought of the dealership not liking a mini van behind their RVs, so I'll use the car. By the way, I checked out your FB page. It looks as if you recently got married. Congrats on that. I'm not sure if you're still doing this line of work or not, but either way best of success with both your marriage and your future endeavors. You be well.
