How to choose the washing machine? This question is the most popular among homeowners when I deliver the bad news to them - your washer is at the end of the life cycle and it is not worth fixing. Now you need to pick a new washing machine.
So I have decided to shoot this video and help those who are in the process of choosing a good washing machine.
What is the difference between the top load and front load washing machines?
What is the advantage of a top load washing machine?
What is the disadvantage of a front load washing machine?
If I have a big family, should I buy a top load machine or front load washing machine?
If it is just the two of us, should we go with a top load washer or front load washer?
All those questions are very reasonable and crucial when you are asking yourself how to pick a new washing machine.
Here is my advice
If your budget is tight go with the top load. You will spend less and it is more reliable than the front load.
If you are looking for a user-friendly appliance with high-quality washing then choose a front load washer.

My clothes get grimy on the job, lots of ground-in soil, cement paste, occasional grease and oil stains. I've used front-loaders when there was nothing else available, and they do better than the agipeller-fauxgitator-fraudgitator models you find at the big box stores ,but the only thing that really gets my clothes clean is an old-school vane-type true agitator like you find in the Speed Queen TC5000.

Exactly what I was looking for. A concise video from a repair tech that deals with these machines day in and day out. Any opinion on which brands you find need less major repairs? Great video by the way!

Thanks, for watching and thanks for the question. if you are looking for reliable brand you can go with Bosch. We rarely service them and those that we service are quite old. So they last.

Yay an expert!! So What’s the best brand washer for quality overall?? I see that LG has good reviews overall but I don’t know if it’s because people are loyal to their favorite brand or if they are that good.

Hi Kanika, and thanks for the question. Yes, LG makes decent washers so this is a reasonable choice. If you are looking for the best quality you may want to look at Bosch and Blomberg washer. They will be a bit more expensive but they are worth that money

What brand top loader would you recommend?
@techvillappliancerepair3825
Hi Kris, thanks for watching and thanks for the question. It all depends on an actual model but in general I would recommend Whirlpool, GE and Electrolux. And stay away from Samsung and LG :)

Thank you so much, great 6 minute chock full of advice video! Need to replace my washer and dryer and have been reading and watching sooo many videos. Yours is so helpful. I see you’re speaking well of Bosch laundry machines. Do you know if mold is ever an issue with the Bosch? The Speed Queen Company representative on the phone told me their machines use commercial parts (different from other frontload manufacturers) just like their commercial laundromat ones and also slant the drum to drain out and that’s why mold is not an issue with Speed Queen. Do you know anything about this company’s washers and dryers in your experience? I do like all other Bosch appliances - the quality and well thought out details. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you. Yaaay, Canada!

Hi Jan, thanks for watching and your question. I am happy to see that this video was helpful. With regards to the Speed Queen I have to admit that it is not very popular in Alberta, Canada, however, we found this brand reliable and it is manufactured with a good quality of parts. As for the Bosch, it’s one of my favourite brand especially for laundry appliances. I don’t think that mildew is a common issue of Bosch washers though. So, both of these brands will be a good choice

Of the front load machines? What is the least likely to require bearing replacement in your experience. I’m interested in a full size washer so the German brands are out for me as they only make compact. I’m considering the GE650 or GE850. Does the GE850 have larger bearings compared to the GE650? Thank you.

Hello! Thanks for watching this video and thanks for the question. Bearing lifetime depends on how big loads you are doing. I’ve seen bearing issues on 5-yo unit being constantly overloaded but usually this element last around 15 years. I was not able to confirm bearing sizes for this two models, however, 4,8 and 5 cf is not a big difference and both models look good to me.

Garrik, how do you tell if the heater is working for the sanitize feature? I have the small LG frontloader and I don't think it has ever worked properly.
@techvillappliancerepair3825
@techvillappliancerepair3825 2 года назад
Hi Alexander, thanks for watching and thanks for the good question There are two ways to check on that: - once you set up on sanitize cycle within a cycle you might see a bit steam coming out from behind the washer upper steam outlet (covered with a white plastic grill); - manually check resistance of a heater with a multimeter (however, it also can be main board/ user interface failure). Let me know if it helps.

How about water use considerations? We live in an area with extreme drought. And I'm thinking about replacing our washing machine as I heard front loaders are great for saving water. Is it really a significant savings?
@techvillappliancerepair3825
@techvillappliancerepair3825 2 года назад
Hi Robert, thanks for watching and thanks for the good question. The best way to deal with this matter is simply take the manual of the new washers you are going to buy and compare the numbers of L/m3 or Gallons used for each cycle. Then you can multiply that by the number of cycles a week and then multiply by 52. So it will give you the difference in water consumption between two models annually. if you know how much each cubic m or gallon costs you can estimate the savings. But the truth is that newer front loaders are using less water than top loaders however this is not ideal for the cloth - less water mans they will worn out quicker. So you need to figure out this balance between more water but potentially buying things more often.

Hello, I have been wondering about a new washer. Heard that belt driven washers are easier to fix and reliable. When you look at LG's direct drive vs belt driven, what do you think? Have also thought about the Whirlpool Cabrio. thank you.

@techvillappliancerepair3825 2 года назад
Hi Randy, thanks for watching and thanks for the question. Classic motor-belt system is an older technology and newer direct drive (stator-rotor) system is becoming more and more common. I can’t say that it’s more complicated or more expensive to fix it. LG has producing those direct drive washers for a while now and those washer are decent ones, not the best on the market but it will not cause you big troubles if you use it gently.

Hey. Does the longevity of a washer depend on the make. For example those that have belts as compared to those that just have a mortar
@techvillappliancerepair3825
@techvillappliancerepair3825 2 года назад
Hello Patricia, thanks for watching and thanks for the good question. We found that the models with belt are more reliable and easier to fix. With regards to the make we would recommend Bosch, Blomberg - they really last long. If you are looking for the top load option Whirpool makes really good Cabrio series. Let me know if it helps.

@@techvillappliancerepair3825 thanks for your response and yes, that was really helpful. In my country Kenya, the popular washers is the LG and many consumers are convinced to buy it because of the direct drive feature that doesn't have a belt. We have Bosch too so I think I'll get it

Speed Queen TC5000. Period. Built to coin laundry reliability standards, tested for the equivalent of eight loads per week for 25 years. Not as pretty as the displays in the big box but it gets the clothes cleaner than any front-load machine ! have ever tried.
