Be it students or expats, right from day 01 in Germany, you have interesting memories to share with your family or friends. What complicates the matter is the fact you have to choose a SIM card amongst 100s of offers in the market. Many students never give it a thought about how much money they can save if they choose the mobile network operators (MNOs) wisely. In Germany, there are 3 mobile network providers namely: Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and O2. All other companies are sub-suppliers or sub-brands of these MNOs.
Based on an independent study by project-CHIP, Telekom was rated as the best operators purely based on network coverage and closely followed by Vodafone and O2. The rating showed no significant difference between the operators. Thus, it is clear that network coverage cannot be a only criteria to determine the best mobile network provider in Germany.

Hey Gogo Master, thanks for your comment. Yes of course, I am also of the opinion that WinSIM has amazing price to performance ratio. I have noticed that a lot of Germans use postpaid services from Drillisch (mother company of Premium and WinSim). Unfortunately, very few international students are aware of these services or maybe fear entering into contract. 😀

In postpaid, what happens if you exceed your data limit by mistake. ?? Will that keep adding to your bill

Hello Ankit...Good question. Assume that you have a 5 GB monthly postpaid pack. In postpaid packs you have an option of auto-top-up or manual top-up. If you have activated auto-top-up then after completion of date for example 5 GB, auto-renewal with 300 MB will take place (premium sim). In this case, charges will apply for renewal I will suggest not to opt for this option. If you don't choose this option, then after completion of 5 GB, your internet speed will be reduced. No extra charges apply, only the speed is reduced. Lwt mw know if it helps.

Thank you so much for the tips! I’ll be visiting Germany for 2 weeks for Christmas and New Year period, so looking at your suggestions I would probably choose a Lidl Connect prepaid SIM card. I’ve also heard that now to get a SIM card there one would have to register at the post office first, is that true? Otherwise, should I order one online through the Lidl website and collect at the store upon arrival, seeing that I only arrive in Frankfurt at 8.30pm, and would probably only reach town around 9.30pm when most shops are closed?

Hello Edric, Good question! I will suggest that instead of buying online, keep it simple and purchase the SIM card when you visit the shop. SIM cards are readily available in the store. Besides, if you have any doubts or if there are any offers you can get the benefit as well. Just keep your personal identification documents with you. If you face any problems, feel free to drop a message here. IMPORTANT: Make sure about the shop timings because many shops are closed on Christmas Days.

Hello! Thank you for a great video. I just wanted to ask if winSim or Premium Sim works in other EU countries. For example I want to call my friend who is in France, will the package cover that call as well?

Hey Haris! Thanks for your kind words. Yes it works in entire EU without any issue. You can even call to India. It's just that for India it would cost around 1 Euro per min. For majority of EU nations, it won't cost. Other it will be nominal.

Hey..Postpaid sim cards are simple; unless and until you register for an additional service. You won't be charged. The basic price is what you agree at the start which includes unlimited calling and limited data. On the top of that if you need additional data, then you will be charged. Otherwise not. :)

Hello Anu, Usually while buying such sims, you are based if you wish to have a 2-year contract or monthy-cancellable. Typically, one should avoid long term contracts because it because cancelling it is difficult. To answer your question, if you have choosen a 2-year contract then it will run for 2 years.

Is 2 gb data enough for month if there is no use when u have wifi at room, so data is going to be used only for minimum search when being outside? What do u suggest?

Good question Nilesh! Based on my personal experience, 2 GB data is enough because you would surely have internet at the universities & at student dorm. Apart from that you might need internet for google maps or google search when you are travelling and for that 2 GB is enough. Don't worry.

Hello Shimony, According to my knowledge, there are no reasonable plans with "unlimited calling{ to India. Usually, if someone has to call too often to India, they opt for plans with higher monthly data (for example 10-15 GB) for internet calls (whatsapp etc). Normal calling to India has limited minutes (check out Lycasim). Let me know if you face any issue or want some clarification.

Hello Sumanth, Flat rate means unlimited SMS and Call. Data is limited and after you use up the data, you get 3G speed. This means you can still get whatsapp messeges.

@@sumanthkota8267 Usually in POSTPAID services, you are not charged extra if you overuse the data. Only the speed will be reduced When you buy it, it is clearly mentioned in terms and conditions.

Nice video. I have one doubt. I already have a O2 prepaid sim which I took when I arrived Germany last month. I have given this number in bank account and other official places. So is it possible to keep this number and switch to a postpaid Winsim or Premium Sim ? TIA.

Hello Deepu, Thanks for your patience Regarding your question: Yes, it is possible tp keep the same number. While registration process, you have that option of keeping he same number. it is called "meine aktuelle Rufnummer mitnehmen". Nice question, Venkata. Actually, postpaid sim will involve a contract. Solution: You don't have to sign for a long term contract. Opt for monthly cancellable option. It makes sense and is practical. In case of any doubt, let me know.

Can I use TransferWise IBAN account to order a postpaid sim ? Would the auto deduction happen from TransferWise account ?

Hello Ankit, Good question! Answer: Unfortunately, NO 😅 Actually, when you order the postpaid SIM in Germany, the company asks for "German Bank". In case of transferwise, the IBAN is not from Germany. (Sometimes, it is from Belgium and it changes). So, the companies don't accept it. Solution: You can try N26 Bank. It is also a neo-bank with transferwise integration. I will prepare a video about it. In the meanwhile you can check about N26. N26 works well. Tried and Tested. In case of further question, let me know.

@@p.s.ilovegermany Thanks for such a detailed description and alternative solution. The problem is I am in India Currently and yet to collect my blue card. N26 is not opening bank account based on fictional certificate or Provisional Letter I can got for my Blue card.

@@vermaankit2005 Hello Ankit, That is correct. Don't try N26 without Blue Card/Residence Permit. N26 opening is not possible with temporary visa. Solution: Don't wait until you get N26. Come to Germany. Purchase a PREPAID sim card for temporary use. Get the bank like Commerzbank/Deutschbank etc. and then post prepaid to postpaid (Same number) with registered bank. It will be done in 2 weeks max (If you are in a hurry)

Hey, it is difficult to get the premium SIM on the first day because it requires a German Bank account. Solution: Take any PREPAID sim for temporary use if it is urgent & when you have a bank account port it to postpaid. Same number posting is possible and it makes sense. Hey Ashed, You can use your Indian sim in Germany. Just imagine you using Indian SIM in Germany to make calls in Germany. It will cost you so much. Firstly you will need a international roaming pack, On the top of that the calls would be classed under international calls. It is be very costly to use Indian SIM in Germany. Solution: In India: Use Indian SIM and not the German SIM In Germany: Use German SIM and not the India SIM. You can use Indian SIM for Whatsapp. If you want to make international calls to India, you can do so from both Indian SIM and German SIM. Ideally, it is done for German SIM by purchasing a International Package for India. Answer to your questions: Theoretically you can use Indian SIM in Germany but it will be very costly. Buying a German SIM is sensible option When you visit India during vacations, use the Indian SIM.

Hello Akhil, You can take it if you are sure that for next 24 months you would be happy with one particular pack. The telecom market is dynamic there are sudden price rise and price drop. 2 years a quite a big commitment for a mobile contract. If for any reason you wish to leave Germany, then also you will have to pay the complete amount.
