Essentially, this video tells beginner graphic designers: 1) Once you've matured your design for a bit, you no longer have to rely on gut feeling; 2) Where to find fonts; 3) Two questions to ask-- Do you want the piece to look established and classic or funky and modern? and 3.5) Do you want a serif or sans-serif font?; and lastly 4) A list of twenty-five fonts that are tested and true. ...But you haven't actually taught us how to choose a font. What design principles go into it? How do we know that one font from your list of twenty-five will be better for one project than another? How do we creatively utilize fonts so that the same font gives off different vibes from one setting to another? Not actually a useful video.

I mean, he gave good tips for beginners about serifs and about how the feeling that the font conveys will change depending on the targeted audience. He could've elaborated more and shown more examples I guess. How to choose a font for your project: 1)consider the targeted audience 2) see if the font fits the 'vibe' of the company(old-time and fancy or modern and simple, serif or sans serif) 3) make sure it is readable (scale it up and down, type a bunch, you know the drill). 4) There is no "The font for this project", just choose one that fits the criteria. It is a useful video, but could've been better with more didactic examples imo.

Im a big fan of using proven geometric fronts and modifying them. Cut something, merge letters, change corners. Small change can make a huge originality, especialy if it communicates with symbol and brand feeling. Roboto, Montserrat, Avenir, Azo sans,Raylway, Ubuntu, Anton. From serif and handwriting: PT Sans, Playfair (georgeus), Roboto Slab, Pacifico, Lora, Libre Baskervile.

My understanding from studying fonts about 40 years ago is that serifed fonts are easier and quicker to read. People don't read individual letters they recognize entire words. Serifs make individual letters blend together and thus, faster to recognize the word. San-Serif fonts slow down word recognition and are thus better for headings and logos - because they force the reader to concentrate on recognizing the words. This has also been my personal experience and I find long paragraphs of san-serif text tiring while a good serifed font, like Garmond, on the printed page to be effortless to the point of being pleasurable to read. The introduction of computers has changed this because serifed fonts can suffer when viewed at low resolution. Nevertheless, with sufficient resolution I still find fonts like Georgia faster to read than any San-serif font. I prefer Georgia on computers because it is a little thicker and larger than the old standards of Times New Roman or Garmond. My work is technical, so I lean heavily towards conveying content. I don't want that to come off as condescending, I very much recognize the role and value of attracting and holding people's attention. It is just that as a technical person it is all about conveying difficult and complex ideas as accurately and efficiently as possible. Put another way, I write lots of equations and with Math there is no contest, serfied fonts are much easier to read and understand than san-serif fonts. I cannot help but also observe, the change in font preferences because of the computer age. Printed books with San-Serif fonts were and are still a rarity because they are difficult to read for extended periods of time. These days more content consumption is graphical or video replacing bulk text on computers and PowerPoint presentations, there has been a shift towards San-Serif fonts. OTOH, maybe it's just me being old and brought up with textbooks full of serifed fonts and it is mostly about fashion and brain inertia. Good video, BTW.

Do the free font got a preference in this regard, so the computers and other platforms will download them by default?
