One other factor worth considering is the relationship between a saddle's rails, the seatpost's offset, and the frame's seat tube angle. If you find your favorite position on the saddle, but the rails, offset, and seat tube angle don't let you move your saddle to where you're sitting on that part without hurting your knees, something needs to be changed. The seatpost is obviously the starting point here, but some folks with strange body proportions might still have a hard time until they figure out exactly what they need.
@wanderingsailor5503

Also, consider your bike geometry. If you're in a mostly upright position, your seat bones are at their widest. In a more aggressive position on the bike, your seatbones narrowl

I've been riding the same bike same saddle for 13 years. My riding position was pretty aggressive but I'm 68 now and my need for comfort has increased. The original saddle is now making me miserable and the handlebars are a reach so my wrists are hurting too! I'm still a big time rider but I need to fix my set up. Thanks for this interesting video.

I'm riding on the saddle that came with my old pure fix and I have to say I quite like it. I even took it over to my new bike because I didn't have any issues. I have to say though that I only very rarely ride long distances without padded shorts so that might be the reason I haven't had any issues...

Most of my bike rides are about an hour more or less. I tend to be in a semi-upright position. I like flater saddles. Most of the WTB saddles work well for me with the nose up just slightly.

I remember reading that if you’re flexible (can reach past your toes) that you should go for something that’s pretty flat from the nose to the tail and go with something more cup shaped if you aren’t that flexible. I ride a lo pro with wide bars and my fav saddle has been a Concor Supercorsa (leather, not suede). I’ve got big thighs and I haven’t had issues with tight pinching with the long dropping sides (I can see why pro trackies still like these things). I’ll start to feel it after about 70 miles (a numb tingling feeling) but if I balance in/out of saddle riding then it’s fine. Nothing sore or aching afterwards.

I've tried a lot of saddles over the years, but I finally got a C17 Cambium with the cutaway, and I love it. It's comfortable with or without padded shorts. I did a century on it a few weeks ago, and my butt was just fine. I'm really looking forward to trying it out on my pedicab, because my current saddle on there is the Velo Orange Microfiber touring saddle, and it's just not doing it for me.

I’ve used a WTB Rocket, Selle San Marco Concor light, Specialized Romin Evo Expert, Specialized Power Expert, and Specialized Power Arc Pro. Of all the saddles the San Marco was by far the most uncomfortable. The WTB was fine and functioned well. The Romin is great and comfortable but I don’t like the long nose on it. The Power saddle was a much better option for me because it was similar to the Romin but with a much shorter nose. The Power Arc Pro has been by far my favorite saddle. It has steeper cut offs than the Power or the Romin and does an amazing job of supporting my sit bones. It’s more aggressive but comfy enough to be able to spin all day in the saddle if I want. I can run it nose down if I’m on the track or nose up if I going 50+ miles.I recommend a lot of people to find your local specialized dealer, have them measure your sit bones, and try a Specialized saddle. Most of them are around $100 but the nice thing is that they all come with a 30 day money back guarantee.

The Cambium I couldn't say, but my Brooks leather saddle has been a life saver for me. Any other saddle I tried just made me bounce up and down, but the 1890s design works for me. As it did for pro riders touring France on steel frames back in the day. If you try one, and let it break in, it's like nothing else. And that would include the cambium, since it does not conform to your seat, I guess?

Just rode about 45 miles on a Selle Italia SL Kit Carbonio Flow saddle that I recently purchased for 60 bucks. I'm happy with it, it replaced my stock Kilo TT saddle which was painful to ride on for anything over 30 miles. I wear padded shorts if I am going to ride for more than 30 or so miles, so that definitely helped, but I felt the saddle was certainly better than the stock one. I have relatively big thighs and ride in a pretty aggressive position, leaning forward most of the time, and frequently in the drops, so I didn't want to get too big of a saddle, and a relief cutout seemed important for that positioning.

hello Zach Gallardo i got a question. I have a cruiser bike and i really like the brook flyer model spring for the look i will be using it for the bike to get around the town would the brook be worth the investment? My idea would be riding laid back style, so would brooks flyer be ideal?
@GordonMoat
@GordonMoat 5 лет назад
Selle Italia SLS on my road bike, which has an agressive riding position. Cinelli Scatto on my single speed, because I sit more upright and usually wear jeans when cycling on that. If you mash more than spin, then your legs will hold more of your weight. If you spin at 90rpm or higher, then the saddle will support more of your body weight. Almost any seat is okay for 30 minutes, but when you cycle for longer time a good saddle makes a huge difference in comfort.

Zach - Great video. My favorite saddle is a Brooks classic leather saddle. I recently managed to break one of these. It was on a vintage road bike that I rebuilt about 3 years ago with a new Brooks saddle. I estimate that I've put approximately 4000-5000 miles on the saddle in 3 years. I weigh about 180 lbs so I don't rider weight is an issue. I was wondering if you have heard anything about quality issues for newer Brooks saddles or was I just a victim of a random factory defect. I had another Brooks saddle that I used for decades before it was stolen. I always thought that they were bullet-proof. I would like to know your thoughts on this matter. Thanks.

How did you find the "active" (pelvis rocking slightly) function? Did yours come with 3 active inserts of different degrees and how did that work regarding testing and final choice?
@8cho9ueve
@8cho9ueve 5 лет назад
I've been riding with SQLabs saddles for years now as well. The 3 inserts are meant to correspond to your current weight (softest for lighter people, hardest insert for heavier people). Instructions should give you the recommended weight for each insert if I think. I've never tried the non active SQLab saddles, but in comparison to other brands of saddles that don't have the rocking motion, the active just makes it slightly more comfortable for my back. The HUGE difference I felt compared to other brands was the perineum relief. No pain or numbness ever when I had it dialed in (not set too high, and sitting on the right part). Sit bones always feel like they're taking most of the pressure (as they should) and not the sensitive tissues.
@grahamrichards8244

Thanks for that. Your original comment has opened a new possibility for me for a road saddle good for rides in excess of 4 hours (where my trouble begins). Great info.

Manufacturer need to look at the frame attachment points. I think you can spend all the money on the seat , but if your rail system or frame system doesn't have some type of isolation or damper from the hard steel rail frame your going to be basically on the frame which will create a hard jarring point on both sides of the seat.. I am looking for a touring/ commuter type of seat and thinking about a Brooks with springs.. Still the hammock effect theory is good, but there again are you in the hammock or on the steel rails???

I'm stilling looking for a comfortable long distance saddle, and I've tried about 6 so far. I keep coming back to the stock Fuji that came on the bike. Some felt good to start and later through the ride would become painful. Some would just hurt after 10 miles. The Brooks B17 was probably the most painful; by the end of the ride it felt like my weight was going to split my hips in two with that seat as a wedge. I guess I have a wider than normal pelvis.

I used to have Ideales, but the company went plastic ~1999 and died as a result. Sigh. Another saddle for people liking the B17 but needing something just a bit wider is the Gilles Berthoud 'Vars'. It's sort of a French B18. It's well made -- straight, really good leather like the Brooks, Ti rails and wide bolt heads rather than rivets. The shape is subtly different from the B17, but IMO not enough to ruin it for Brooks bros.

The best saddle I ever had was also the cheapest and most bizarre. Back in the '90s, when I pulled the bike I hadn't been on for a few years out of the garage and bruised my sit bones after riding it for a half-hour or so. The bike shop had this plastic thing--it was two slightly shorter than a brick-sized plastic blocks, rounded (downward) at the front with a sheet of neoprene over the tops, with the seat post clamp visible between them. They rotated around the seat post, and were hinged to follow the legs peddling movements. The first thing I thought on the first stroke was "this thing moves WAY too much for something I'm sitting on!" My second thought was. "All the pain is gone." A few years later they broke in a crash and I've never seen anything like them since.

Yes, I had one of those that I got from sharper image. The Hobson Original Easyseat is very similar. It’s so unique because it has no nose to poke your coosh, just 2 pads to rest your buns. Most people don’t like them because they don’t look like a saddle style seat. However, it’s so very comfortable.

I think the Specialized Power deserves a mention. It's technically a triathlon saddle (whatever the fuk that means), but it's very popular amongst both road and and mtb riders. Personally it is my go-to saddle on the road bike, and I don't see why it wouldn't be a great option for my fixed riding as well. Its a very unique saddle, and the odds are good that if your ass just can't find the right saddle, this one will do the trick.

The Cambium. It did not work for me at all. It left my butt like hamburger. It just felt like riding on a 2x4 and the rough cotton chafed. The Brooks B17 is the gold standard for me. They work right out of the box and get better with time. Even 20 miles makes a noticeable difference. My two road bikes have Brooks Team Pros. They are harder than the B17 and break in far less (Brooks uses a different part of the cow, which is tougher). They are a bit narrower and work well for more aggressive riding.

SQLab 612 Ergowave (made by a German company) is the best saddle I've had so far. Saw a youtube video where even the inventor of the Specialized Romin saddle praised SQLab's research on pressure relief. No discomfort ever once I found the proper saddle height. I tried the Specialized Power just to compare, but the spots where the sit bones rest seem to angle down slightly more, and I felt pressure that I didn't feel with the SQLabs saddle (not too painful, just felt uncomfortable by comparison). I also tried the Brooks Cadmium (no cutout), and felt more perineum pressure than with the SQLab or Power saddles. Sit bones felt a bit more comfortable on the Cadmium because of the rubber's shock absorbing feel, but wasn't worth the extra perineum pressure (although can't speak for the cutout version of the Cadmium). SQLab saddles used to be hard to find the US until recently, but some places sell them online and the few reviews I've seen by others have been overwhelmingly positive as well.

Nexride noseless saddle. Only drawback is that it comes with its own stem limiting your choice

Brooks is overrated imo. I have flyer and I don't even know why there are these springs, because they didn't absorb any turbulence.

Where are the big comfortable saddles? A lot of bikers prefer ruining their ass for the small good looking saddle. I have a B'TWIN CITY 900 GEL BIKE SADDLE XL

A drawback to cutouts is you can get wet in an awkward spot in bad weather.
