Hi, I went to art school and earned a four-year degree in Fine Art in the late 90s. Only recently did I decide to pursue a certificate in interior design, which essentially amounts to one year's worth of education in the field. I received my certificate in early 2023, and by that summer, I found work at a new interior design firm. Unfortunately, that position didn’t work out, so it’s been about a year and a half since my certification, and I have yet to land a permanent position. I still feel very much like a fish out of water. I have some experience putting together design schemes, and my rendering skills have improved significantly. I’ve also done a bit of freelance work, creating 3D renderings for high-end residential projects. Despite this, I often feel like I know nothing and struggle with imposter syndrome. Recently, I landed an interview with a commercial firm that specializes in healthcare and education projects. I have a huge question mark in my head, but I’m hoping they might take me on as a junior designer. My question is, when does it all "click"? Or does it always feel like I’m never going to work on any interior projects and see them through to completion? This year and a half after receiving my certification has been filled with so much doubt, but I’m sticking it out and hoping this interview goes well. Wish me luck!

Your confidence will grow with every project you get to work on. The more feedback you get the more growth you'll experience. Just know that it is normal 👌 Don't focus so much on what has been, that's wasted energy. Look at the good and exciting stuff that's ahead! It's hard to wire your brain like this (I battle with this all the time) but you have to have this attitude if you want to get somewhere in this field ✌️ You'll get there eventually. Just keep knocking on those doors and be relentless 🔥

Excited to hear this video. The loud music is a bit distracting, but still giving it a thumbs up. :)

Ahh, sorry about the loud background. Sometimes it's hard to tell how loud it gets as I'm editing whilst everyone is already asleep at home 😁 I'll turn it down for the next one ✌️

Thank you so much for the well made and detailed video. This is extremely helpful as an interior design international student in London who is just trying to maximize on the education I am investing in.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate your encouragement! There is definitely so much to look forward to. Do you happen to give portfolio reviews? Anyway, I love that last part about just being relentless!! Thank YOU!!

You're very welcome! And I love that you stayed till the last part ✨✌️ University can be and should be a really life forming time so I hope we can make that happen for future design students 💛

@@SpaceForEdit Absolutely! The new generation of designers should definitely be encouraged but also understand the kind of hurdles that exist, but that they can conquer them!

And make a video about making the first clients out of the blue!

Good shout! Nothing really happens out of the blue as it's all just a combination of many little things, networking and a bit of good timing on top. But I'll note this for future videos!

I love your videos! I'm a MATURE student (30yo!) With kids and a job so , I have had to do my degree with the open university. I know this isn't your experience, but do you have any tips or words of advice for those who are studying by distance learning? Is there anything we can do for ourselves to make it more immersive?

First of all congratulations on even committing to this! It 's a lot to cram into your days. I hope you'll enjoy the experience 👍 And yes, I'm not the best to give advice on this type of learning, but as with anything- you will get out what you put in. Actually, I think that 'mature' students have an advantage in a way that they hear and see things that younger students don't. You soak up information differently when you're older. And as far as making it immersive goes- visit showrooms, exhibitions, trade shows, and talk to the people in these settings. Be honest that you are a student and see where the conversation goes. This will prep you for the 'real world' as it really is all about relationships and networking in this industry. Good luck!! 💫👏

What visa to apply for AFTER university? Speak about stuff like that

When I came over to the UK they were still in EU so we didn't need any visas. It's probably different now. And once I graduated and by the time UK left EU, I had lived here for enough to not have to deal with any other applications 👍 not sure if I can help any further 🤔
