Take a trip to your local big box store or nursery and you'll find all kinds of different bagged soils. It can be very confusing. In this video, we will look at the quality of some bags and I will break down the differences of raised bed garden soil, garden soil, vegetable soil, peat moss, compost and I'll give you an easy way to figure out how you can save money when purchasing your soil with a bonus tip at the end.

So few channels actually show the ingredients of the soils. As someone who likes to make my own mixes, I like to know what I'm starting with so I know where to go from there. Thanks for the helpful video! New subscriber here

If you want a really good mix recipe that I developed and use for next to everything as it is so damn good use the following 50-60% peat moss, 50% cow manure compost or compost, perlite typically 2 8 quart bags per 1 standard wheelbarrow load of mix, mix together, can add in a bit of top soil if you want, and then blend in 4-5 tablespoons lime and add in 2 cups of granulated organic fertilizer usually I use Espoma Garden tone. Add 1 bag of mushroom compost to the top after filling bed or grow bags. Drains well everything loves it and sweet potatoes go nuts in it.

For the beginning gardener I would suggest the Miracle-Gro for raised beds. Just my 2¢

All the soil I buy for leveling my lawn at big box stores is garbage. It’s all dried out clay clumps mixed with mulch and stones of varying sizes. I’m done buying from big stores and go to local landscaping companies.

the issue is compost, they all might contain PFOA. I would never use miracle grow

Any recommendations or opinions on using garden soil to top dress 2000 sq feet clay soil.. for lawn purposes?

Garden soil or compost. For that large a space check your local landscapers or nursery for a bulk load. Probably a lot cheaper.

Is the “wood forested products “ just a “filler”
@inthegardenwithpatrick6247
@inthegardenwithpatrick6247 4 месяца назад
They are, but will break down over time. The larger sized particles just take longer to break down in the soil. Thanks for watching and subscribing!

I would not buy any of these bags, too many wood chips eating nitrogen. No wonder they added fertilizers to compensate.
@inthegardenwithpatrick6247

It is really funny how there is such a big difference in those products and YES, a lot of them had shredded wood in the mix. Not too bad for your garden soil, since the organic matter will break down over time, but the container mix shouldn't have so much.

If you're buying bags of "product soil", you're already doing it wrong.

Some people don't need but a few bags of purchased soil. The miracle grow raised bed soil is your best bet , especially if you are new to gardening.

All junk , you need a BLACK SOIL with those white beads so the plant can get oxegen in the roots. When you buy a plant you will notice a black soil with those white beads of foam in EVERY plant you buy. Bark and ground up bark wood chips is a poor soil. I am sick of you people on you tube who think you know everything.if they use the black soil to start a seed. You should use the same thing. I grow tomatoes every year and try out new things , but the black soil is best.

Thanks for your comment. It is difficult to recommend one specific brand. Some regions sell different brands that others don't have in their region. Take another look at the video. I gave you some great tips on how to choose a great soil for a low cost. Happy gardening!
