Personally, I would say grey is the least visible colour as it blends in with more surfaces, particularly if it's overcast or foggy. From anecdotal 'evidence' orange is actually the best colour for visibility, it shows up better even under street lights. Floro colour paint have a 'service limit' with a use before date, usually around three years. In my experience, unused paint goes much darker and non fluorescent. Sorry to keep going on about it but I've done motorcycles 50+ years. With motorcycle helmets, it's recommended to have helmet slightly tight as it will bed in and conform to your head after a few months. US Snell standard was mainly impact which turned out to be a bad thing as it transferred more impact to head. The later European standard is actually best available today, Snell has done research and has modified it's testing. I would imagine the Australian standard being resistance to impact would actually be the same problem transferring more energy to head so actually not as good as Europe and America. Biggest issue I have is how massively overpriced they are for a bit of Styrofoam with a thin plastic cover made from same material as a cheap disposable water bottle from supermarket
The only way to choose a helmet is to go to LBS and try everything they have in stock. Period. End of strory. Say, you have seen an amazing, fantastically looking helmet of your dreams - it has all the fancy safety technology, it matches the color of your bike or kit, so you're immediately falling in love. You order it online, wait several days for delviery to be very disappointed in its godawful fit on your head. Happened to me several times with Bontrager and ABUS. I love the design of ABUS helmets but boy they're ridiculous when you try to fit any of their models.
Hi Reginald - just discovered that RU-vid had unsubscribed me from your channel ! Hope your subscriptions aren't being diddled with because of your plant food video. I've seen them do this to channels that cover non-mainstream topics, but cycling is hardly controversial !!!!
25:36 Most soldiers in ancient times traded protection for comfort by choosing to use helmets that do not protect their faces and ears, even though they know the possibility of getting stabbed in the face was high. They also took off their helmets as often as possible to cool off even though they knew there was always the possibility of getting shot by arrows even when there wasn't any enemy in sight. There's always a trade off. At least the possibility of getting stabbed by a sword or shot by an arrow when cycling is way lower. Safety is not the only thing to consider. If it was, you should not ride a bike at all because the sport is dangerous enough for you to consider wearing a helmet. There are reasons why 99.9% people do not wear a helmet in a country that is friendly to bicycles. In my opinion, at least if you ride in a dedicated bike lane and your speed is below 25 kph, it is ok to not wear a helmet. Also, people in any kinds of cars should wear helmets if being safe is always more important than anything else. I don't have the data, but my guess is it is easier to get severe head injuries in a car accident than in a bicycle accident. But yes, when I ride a road bike and my speed is quicker than 30kph, I wear a helmet. But that does not mean anyone should do the same.
You should always use a helmet at any speed. I know a guy who died from a head injury falling off a motorcycle… that wasn’t moving. 😳 I don’t think it needs to be a law, it’s just common sense. I also don’t think it’s fair that drivers are made to use seatbelts but cyclists can get away without a helmet. Personally I think everything to do with your own health should be up to you. So I’m not going to force anyone to use a helmet, I just think if people don’t they are basically saying their brain isn’t worth protecting. 😅
Apparently the climbing style helmet is not as safe because its shell is not as smooth as with the aero helmet. If you crash, a ridge on the climbing helmet is more likely to snag on an irregular surface, increasing the risk of a significant injury (eg neck injury)...
They say 3-5 years. But I’m not sure how they come up with that figure. I’d say replace when needed. It very much depends on how much solar radiation your skid lid gets?
@@reginaldscot165I ride roughly 150hrs per year, approx. half in strong sunlight. So that is about 5 full 12hr days /yr. I doubt that is going to hurt in less than 20 years. If anyting its dissipation of plastic softener chemicals like tires age too. I had ski boots which just broke apart when walking after after 25 years due to dissipation of softener.
@@reginaldscot165 An independent test I saw online a few years ago impact-tested a new helmet and an aged helmet (20 years if I'm not wrong, DO NOT take my word for it as I can't recall now), both were damaged in a similar manner (ie. little to no changes in the aged helmet's safety factor). But, take what I said with a grain of salt as even I myself use the 5-year rule for helmet replacement unless it wasn't used for some time with the helmet stored indoors with a constant temperature and humidity. Would I use a 20-year old helmet that was stored in a room with controlled variables out on a ride? I doubt I would. My Specialized Propero III was made in April 2021 and was last worn in mid-October 2022, so even if I theoretically have to replace it in March 2026, it might be OK for me to exceed that date by a little if I didn't wear it for these four years. Who knows when this helmet will take the hit for me (knock on wood).
"Oh muh gerd!!! He ripped the original padding right outta that helmet! I bet he's gonna sell it after ripping it apart! AAARRRGH!!!" Sorry, but I just had to... 🤣
Ur are invisible too drivers cause they dont LOOK! The Color dose not make a differance. Please STOP telling ppl that the color makes a differance. IT DOSE NOT! If you want to be seen wear reflective clothing AND blinking lights.
Humm, I understand where you are coming from but as a driver I find cyclists in brightly coloured clothes easier to see. So I don’t see the harm in being sensible about it and trying to make other people’s lives easier. Also if I’m dressed in visible clothing and someone still hits me then I know it was due to incompetence or it was intentional. Then I’m entitled to retaliate. 😁
@@reginaldscot165 you see cyclists because you yourself are also one. It's the same with motorcycles, ppl tend NOT to see them cause they don't lookout for them.
@@66mikkim I guess your opinion couldn't really apply to non-cyclists since I also naturally look out for motorcyclists and cyclists quite easily ever since I became a cyclist (years before I'm licensed to drive), regardless of apparel and bike colour.
Me : nothing to learn from this video Him : less material means less sunlight is absorbed by the material means less heat in the helmet Me : 😮 I genuinely never thought of that
Dude! Nice doo!! Just an observation, but there seems to be as many different helmets as there are saddles!😵. 3D print everything to fit you and only YOU! Please! Rant over. Thanks.
@@reginaldscot165 I think that the helmet would definitely have to have an “exoskeleton “ that satisfies the necessary safety requirements, but the fit of it should be something that’ can be made to order…like a “cost sensible 3D printing “set up. Reebok made the “pump up” shoe years back, that theoretically allowed for a better fit. I’m just disappointed that more thought hasn’t been put into a better fitting helmet or saddle. Don’t even get me started on an affordable cycling shoe that fits well!! Thanks for your content. Great platform for thinking about solutions in cycling!
I dropped a new helmet from a height of 3 feet; the dome of the helmet hit concrete. I don't see any cracks; only a couple of superficial scratches which I was able to rub away. Do I need to replace my helmet?
@@reginaldscot165 I wouldn't sue you :) But I suspected the question was really not one anyone could answer. I will call the manufacturer (Bontrager), so thanks!
The color layer of you helmet is so far apart from you skin with even an insulating material in between. The cooling ride wind cools much more than de radiation warms…I would doubt the color of you helmet has significant effect…
