Nice video, Kirby! How does the JR oak bark sole compare to Baker oak bark leather sole in terms of quality and durability? TBH I'm not a big fan of the JR stamp.

Baker and JR are doing the same quality. Gaziano, for instances, uses Baker whereas Edward Green uses JR. Baker is very difficult to find outside the United Kingdom, but they make a great oak bark tanned leather outsole also. I'd love to visit their factory someday.

Is there any chance that the existing welt quality can be assessed, and if necessary the welt be replaced as part of the service/for an extra fee? Same regarding the ability to adjust the heel pitch? A manufacturer-based recrafting service (I'm not being very sneaky here) mangled the welt on a few of my shoes, and though I've resigned myself to wearing them until they come due again for a resole, I wonder if the welt may need replacement at that time. The heel is also attached such that the sole does not touch the ground when the heel is flat; instead only the front edge of the toplift touches the ground when I stand with my forefoot touching the ground, and the rear of my heel is in the air. I rock back and forth like a table with a short leg. Too much info: The resoling job placed outsole stitches at a much higher density than the original, poking many times more extra holes in the welt, the edges were sanded down excessively to the point that some of the stitch holes are now on the edge, it is very close to the upper and I imagine a tight space to work on in the future, etc.

Hi Connor. This certainly sounds like a botched resoling job that hit a lot of the highlights of a terrible job. It really showcases how a pair of shoes can easily be ruined with bad work. We'd love to take a look at your shoes and see what we can do. I think we'd be able to fix almost all of the issues. The new welt would come at an additional fee, but everything else could be fixed at our Sovereign Grade level.

Thanks for your videos. I’m ordering a custom pair of TLB Mallorca. I am going to choose the JR soles but have a question. They are offering single and double soles. I own several pairs of Allen Edmonds Park Ave. I don’t want an extremely tall sole. Would you recommend the single or double sole from JR.

What are your thoughts on double stacked leather soles? Is this something appropriate for styles like cap-toe oxfords (no brogue)? Or is it much more common and conservative to have these classic styles in single leather soles? Thank you!

Hi Kirby, your program is the best thing the shoe industry has seen in a while in my view. I live in Belgium. It rains a lot just like in London and my fear is that when spending a lot of money on a nice pair of dress shoes with leather outsoles, my grip will get compromised and I might slip (hurting myself or damaging my clothing/shoes in the action). What's your view on it? I've worn a pair of Chelsea boots with leather outsoles in a department store (typical concrete slippery foor) and I was sliding all over the place. I know a new smooth leather outsole will feel different after a few wears but my question about the grip in rainy situations remains. I've done some research but I'd like to hear your opinion now you've studied the matter of outsoles even more. Cheers!

Olivier De Vriendt I think you shouldn’t have any trouble so long as the leather outsole is of quality. And you can always have your shoes resoled with JR if you are unable to purchase a brand that is made with them from the factory. Gentlemen have been walking in shoes with leather outsoles in London for a lot longer than they haven’t....

Another Great Video! Quick question, could you elaborate on why leather is many times better than rubber?

For me, I think the biggest difference of leather is (1) elegance and (2) it breathes better than and is lighter than rubber. Rubber bottom shoes are always heavier and clunkier. I greatly prefer leather except for the few situations where someone is really spending a lot of time outside and in the rain. The other thing you have to consider is rubber is rubber. But not all leather is created the same. A high-quality JR outsole with its high fiber density can easily give a rubber shoe a run for its money on longevity.

@@kirbyallison I have JR soled shoes that haven't been resoled in years, and the outer eighth of an inch of the soles literally becomes Rock solid after wearing it in. It's pretty amazing how durable it is.

Leather molds to your feet for more comfort, rubber soles do not.

Carmina's shell cordovan shoes come with them as well. SHOEPASSION offers Rendenbach soles as an upgrade on some of their models.
