This is very true- thanks for keeping it real! I remember I was comparing mics with my friend. I have a crappy $80 mic that I got like 10 years ago and my friend's new almost $,1000 mic. Don't get me wrong, his was much better with clarity and quality overall. But, honestly, it wasn't that significant of a difference. It really does matter more on familiarity with your gear, the delivery of the singing itself, etc.

Shure smb7 is probably the best mic for most vocals. It’s dynamic and has a huge foam over the mic. From Metallica/Pantera to Michael Jackson to female/pop vocals it’s a work hours. It takes EQ and effects very well.

Thanks for this! My setup is in my basement. An Audio-Technica AT-2020 Studio Condenser Mic, Se Electronics RF-X Reflexion Shield help me get the job done. To me, the AT-2020 is a great all-purpose mic, and pretty cost effective at only $99 bucks.

I'd refine the last bit: pick a mic, learn to work with it, and as long as it's adequate move on to the next thing about your sound or your skills or your workflow that you want to improve, and see how to do that. There is no "the best" mic for you, and if you are new enough to need this advice you won't know what it is yet anyway, maybe even won't be able to make it sound better than what you've already got...yet.

I keep coming back to my Heil PR-35. It's reliable, predictable, and I know how it sounds... which is very good. Heil makes some of the best dynamic mics.

Watching Warren Huart's sponsored "record a song with one mic" sessions, I always thought he would do just as well with a 57. He knows how to bring out the performance by using any gear at its best.

I recommend the tlm 102 or the tlm 103 for anyone trying to step up to the pro level But if you are in a budget I would recommend the rode nt1a for people who don't have acoustic treatment but if you do have acoustic treatment and you want a digital sound go with the blue microphones

I'd bought the tlm 102 when it released it still use it today. It's such a great piece of gear and incredibly versatile.

I bought a At2020 because everyone said a condenser microphone would be the best for recording singing, but when I use it in my room that isn't treated, it sounds really bad. The I used a $10 Digital Reference dynamic microphone, it still doesn't sound great but better than the At2020 in my room. Now I'm not sure if I should treat my room with a couple acoustic panels. I did order a Shure Sm7b and a Sm57 to see which one I like better or if there is even difference. If not I'll probably keep the 57 and work with that as It seems a lot of great albums were made with it. It's just so confusing with all the information everyone gives out hahaha.

trust me, the best way to choose the mic is to borrow/rent/ask some friends and do some a/b tests... and then choose what mic suits with you... but if you plan on recording other artists def invest in some usual suspects... there is definitely a quality gap that comes with price but - compare!!! i have u87s m149, tlms 102 103 and 49, shures and i always find that some mics are better for some voices... and trust me, sometimes some 3-4 times cheaper mics sound better (for voice) than 3000$ mic... i recently did a session with at4050 (that is around 700euros) and was blown away how good and transparent it sounded on male vocals... and chose it for a artist over u87. but generally i say better invest and rent if you can, or borrow from someone, maybe a commercial studio near you would rent you for a day, never buy a mic you havent heard thinking it would change a world for you! test drive it first ;)

I am looking for a vocal recording mic that has excellent off-axis rejection because I will also be playing and recording an acoustic guitar simultaneously (obviously directly underneath the vocal mic), and therefore want as little bleed from the guitar as possible. My SM57 does an okay job, but because it is cardioid it's not perfect. I have read soooo many websites about what I should be using, and get the idea that a supercardioid would be better, or even hypercardioid. I just have to bear in mind where it is pointing in the opposite direction so that it wouldn't detect anything on the other side of the room, but in my case it will be a treated wall. I am currently looking at the Sennheiser e945 and Shure Beta 57A (approx. £200 GBP / USD), but then I see something else... and something else... ad infinitum. Are there any singer-songwriters out there who know what I am referring to? Or anyone with experience with this popular scenario? Your input (ha!) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

To second your commentary- just happened to get the Mojave that you're using after hearing and seeing a bunch of nice sounding videos and rave reviews. Once I got it I felt like I was dealing with a whole different mic than these videos I'd seen.... it just is not a great fit for my particular voice, although for example it sounds great on your voice. What I'm finding is despite all the shootouts I'm watching, you don't really know until you have it in front of you.

I rather use a U 87 or a U 47 personality for vocals. It's a way better mic. Plus I noticed you said nothing about the preamps? For example if I used let's say a sm57 on a neeve preamp it would sound different if I used it on Earthworks preamp. We all know mic's are used like a seasoning? But it really comes down to having good preamp.

I was taught that the mic has to be pointed at your mouth, but your mouth doesn't have to be pointed at the mic. Vital if you don't have a pop filter!

Hey thanks for this helpful video. I hope you won't mind my feedback - I got annoyed by your swaying black and forth to and away from the mic with the volume level fluctuating correspondingly. No offence please, really hoping this can help you make your videos even better🙌

Well you can start by reading....Practical Recording Techniques was the book of choice, maybe there is an updated version. You really want to understand the mechanics of sound recording. How a mic actually works. Some basic electronics knowledge is very useful to understand how components shape a signal, and how gear works. Get to fully understand the signal chain from mic input to tape/DAW. Watching these kinds of videos is good. Play around with basic gear you may have or can afford. There are some good low cost/free options for software. I started multi-tracking with 2 cassette recorders. Look for a studio in your area, maybe they would let you observe ask questions. In the old days you always started as 'joe boy, gopher', and eventually got to work low level sessions. Meet some local bands and record some jams. Schooling can be helpful, but I would avoid the higher end schools at this point. You don't want to commit financially until you are really sure you have enough interest and aptitude. I would go back to the beginning of sound recording and learn the history of the progress from wire recording to modern DAWs. Spend some time listening to all kinds of recorded sound, not just music. What do you hear? What don't you hear? Start to ponder how you might record a situation: Band in a studio, band at a clubs, busker on the street, conversation in a restaurant. Pay attention to ALL the sound next time you watch a movie. Really work to understand how sound shapes a persons response and emotions. Jump in get your hands dirty. Playing an instrument is not necessary but useful. Developing a sense of timing and rhythm is important. Ask questions, and remember the only 'dumb' question is the one you don't ask. Hope this helps. - Cheers

If someone has the crappy mic-technique of Hassan or Denim on Twitch, there *is no* "right mic", they all become "wrong", due to half-witted incompetence.
