I love how you played just by yourself and without the context of a mix you understand that you would kind of been the mix around the guitar sound rather than bend the guitar sound around the mix

RV-6 has an amazing "hidden" Shimmer Reverb setting when you dial in the Tone knob all, or almost all the way to the left. It becomes this amazing, dark, mellow, subtle (for ambient reverb standards) sound, perfect for folks who are looking for something a bit more modern, but think that "full fat" Shimmer reverb sound is a bit obnoxious.

Thanks for another great, useful video Michael. I have the MXR Reverb pedal and the setting I use the least is the Room Reverb. But watching this, and loving the sounds you're getting, you've inspired me to play around more with it and use your suggestions for that. Cheers!

Great explanation of the various types of reverb. When i first started playing, i couldn't live without a lot of reverb. I still use it but now just a little bit. Just enough to know it's there. Sometimes i wonder if one day I'll prefer no reverb at all.

I have the RV-6 and tend to leave it on plate with a fairly long time (1:00-2:00) but light on the effect (10:00). Now I want to mess around with the other settings and be a bit more adventurous. Thanks for the incentive.

It seems simple but he idea of saving a hall reverb for slower quieter parts and allowing it to help you in those areas is smart, I often turn away from too washy of a verb because if I get busier I don't want it in the way but honestly it's a good reason to chill and play less notes, letting the sound do the work and enhance a song without necessarily enhancing my ego ha. Thanks nice video Michael and that Radiohead territory you speak of is real- I don't tend to think of them as reverb heavy but when they all do their thing and sounds wash together it has the overall effect of that modulated reverb sound. They seem to obsess over the size and space in any given song

Nice as ever Mike :-) When I use a reverb+delay setting it will as a quick and easy setting for solos, lead sounds and a more 'produced' sound. Then when I'm using a shimmer setting, that's when I use volume swells for a huge ambient organ sound! Theatre composers love it...

I ditched my reverb pedal and try to use the amp reverb instead, albeit its hard to find the sweetspot in between of nothing at all and way too much. I have a Fender HRD (classic Spring RV-Tank) and an Orange SC100 (digital Plate-RV) and usually use only a tad of reverb to moisturize my sound a bit for not being too dry. Nice video anyway😅

I have the Mosky Spring Reverb in my amp effects loop. Alternative types of reverb don't work as well here because they are too hi fi and don't colour the sound. Save the hall type reverbs for recording.

I have gotten pretty tired of the sound of my Spring Reverb, that is, the silent tone of the brokenness of the unit. 2024 is year of the Plate, so we are going to try a Brass one and a Nickle one. Eschew Failure FTW!

Thx so much for this. So helpful. How would you change your settings going from the studio to a gig? Do you make adjustments at the venue based on how big the room or how it responds?
@diegofignani1018
@diegofignani1018 6 месяцев назад
That's a very good question, it's never easy to make the transition from your room to any other place. In my opinion, you should always adjust your EQ and reverb depending on the place and band you're playing with.
@happytiarailham7699
@happytiarailham7699 6 месяцев назад
Using an expression pedal to control the amount of mix/decay might usefull in any case. It only work in one certain pedal off course
@MichaelBanfieldGuitar
@MichaelBanfieldGuitar 6 месяцев назад
That's a really good question. It would depend on the situation but with the general rock pop stuff that I'm playing live at the moment I tend to use less generic always on reverbs because I find the large room of a venue usually provides that for me, although I might use a short delay instead. But for reverb sounds where it's more of a feature in the sound then I tend to crank the reverb right up so it's really obvious, it seems to sound less over the top than if I did that at home in a small room. That's what generally works for me anyway.
@MichaelBanfieldGuitar
@MichaelBanfieldGuitar 6 месяцев назад
Oh, and if I somehow find myself playing in an enormous high ceiling hall or church type venue then all bets are off because the room can be so lively that I don't need any reverbs or even delays at all. Those are pretty tough gigs if they're with a full band because the room is just so tough to work with.
