Orchid Whisperer I love the orchid print in the background. Is there any way to get a copy or does the artist have other orchid paintings?

you've inspired me to transfer my phals to water culture and thank you! I've only seen improvements, such as plumper leaves and one of my phals had a stalled flower spike that has doubled in size since moving to water culture.

Oh I had that book long time ago. It’s was a very good read. I’ll practice and learn about water culture with 2” Better-Gro bag orchids. I didn’t have much success growing Phalaenopsis and other orchids using hydroton clay pebbles when I first became interested in orchids. That was around 2005.

I have placed my orchids in water and am learning to have patience. Thank you for your updates. I have the rescued phalanx, and after I placed it in water, I finally see a new leaf growing. I have just started in the past September and they are still living and I am ready to purchase my third one.

Thanks so much for your comment! It sounds like you're really doing well with you phals, and I'm happy to hear you're getting new growth! That's a great sign. And I hear about learning to have patience...orchids do tend to teach us that as well. lol. Thank you for your update and happy growing my friend! :)

You are o so right...I had a catt in medium bark and when I water it there came lots of crawling insect out of the pot.Good info yes 👍

Dear Orchid Whisperer! I purchased a magnificent phal from a grower here in town. It has 10 leaves, cascading flowers on two sides, and each side has two branches (4 branches of blooms)! Well, after a couple weeks when I opened the curtains to let sunlight in, I saw a web between the leaves and thought I would clean it on the weekend. When I did, it had bugs, black mold and lots of dead roots packed tight in moss! So I cleaned and sanitized, and repotted it in bark. The blossoms began to drop two weeks later. Took it out the bark, white mold this time and more root rot. I cleaned and sanitized again with hydrogen peroxide, cut out the rot, so now, it has much smaller root system. I have it in a tall glass container for water culture, there's water in the bottom for humidity, but no water touching the roots. It's been 2 days, no more flower drop. What do I do next?
@TinRoofVintage
@TinRoofVintage 6 лет назад
I think I have figured it out. My orchid stopped dropping flowers when I took it out of the medium. I only watered the roots and leaves with a spray mist of filtered water, so far so good. Today, a week later, I've put water only in its glass container up to halfway up the roots. Once they "green up", I will remove the water and see what happens. Orchid Whisperer, you are correct .... Patience!! Your videos are gold!! ♡♡♡

I thought that phals didn’t like their feet wet and started to rot, but your video proved otherwise. How often do you change their water and clean up the glass vases from hard water stains? Thank you.

Hi and thanks so much for watching! This is one of my older water culture videos, and I've learned a lot since then! :) If you decide to do water culture, I recommend you do research on the method and just start with 1 orchid. I have several updated videos on my channel that will help you...from Aug 17, 2017 to the present are my best WC videos. The Aug 17 video covers the topic of water changing and cleaning vases. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! Happy growing!

Hi. Someone presented that 'Oncidium' bear folded with damp paper towel, he was my Art teacher Artist, he got it from Mango tree from his Village in India, Now I don't know what I will do, I was going to search in Google but from RU-vid catches your videos, you are more than decade experienced, I was excited and happy to find you, that's why asking you,hope not bothering you.zz
@OrchidWhisperer
@OrchidWhisperer 6 лет назад
Hi! Can you ask your art teacher how he grows them? And the other thing to take into consideration...is this a baby plant or a fully mature Oncidium? If it's a full grown one, and if there's no bark stuck on the roots, you would be able to do water culture. You wouldn't be "converting" the orchid to water culture because it's already bare-rooted. If it's a baby Oncidium, I would recommend you place it in orchid grade premium sphagnum moss (not regular brown basket moss) or New Zealand sphagnum...baby orchids grow very well in moss. Keep me posted, I'm happy to help you! Happy growing!

You have such wonderful phals and you have taught me so much with taking care of them. However, I need urgent help with a large Cymbidium orchid which probably will never re-bloom for me in South Florida. My question is would it be possible to just put this orchid in the ground in a shady place where it could stretch out these fleshy roots without the constraint of a pot it outgrows constantly? Could this plant thrive in garden soil?
@OrchidWhisperer
@OrchidWhisperer 7 лет назад
Thank you for your wonderful comment Solveig. Cymbidiums can grow so large that it's hard to find a suitable container for them. Since you're in South Florida you can definitely grow cymbidiums outdoors. If you live in an area that never freezes or gets below 45 degrees F I don't see why you couldn't put it in the ground. These are semiterrestrial orchids and they do grow more like a houseplant than any other orchid. I would choose a place that gets morning sun and then is shady the rest of the day. If you do have freezes in the winter, I would grow this orchid in a barrel (I have several plastic ones that I grow tomatoes in that look like whiskey barrels) and you could move it under a porch or into your garage when it gets cold. As for the potting mix, I would keep it as similar to the media it has been growing in as possible. It is obviously happy growing in its current media. Keep me posted on that huge cymbidium and thanks so much for your question! Happy growing! :)
@solveigfreeman3286
@solveigfreeman3286 7 лет назад
Thank you so much for giving me your input. I lean to putting it into the ground and just letting it go since I do not expect ever getting any flowers because our winters here are 55 degrees at worst. Someone told me to put large amounts of ice cubes around the plant during the flowering period in the spring. Don't know if this is a good idea. Again, thank you so much for giving me your time and help
@OrchidWhisperer
@OrchidWhisperer 7 лет назад
You're very welcome and I hope the orchid surprises you by giving you lots of blooms! They really are pretty even when they're not in bloom. I can't imagine a 55 degree cold winter....the orchid possibilities would be limitless. Lol!!! Happy growing and if that plant blooms for you again, please let me know! :)
@solveigfreeman3286
@solveigfreeman3286 7 лет назад
Yes, the orchid possibilities are endless here in SW Florida. I have all my FWC orchids outside all year round and my trees are full of blooming orchids right now. However, my phals are inside since I could not get a healthy looking plant outside because of the very hot and rainy summers which my phals did not like at all. If this large Cymbidium ever blooms I promise to send a picture to all. thank you again

Hi and thanks so much for watching! I would definitely repot this Phalenopsis into some fresh bark. I have repotted several of my Phals while they're in bloom, and it doesn't harm the plant at all. I hope you have a very successful repotting and that your plant lives for many years! Happy growing!

I have a phalaenopsis that has very pretty green tip aerial roots. When I look through the plastic container I see brown mushy roots in the bark. Should I be concerned?
@OrchidWhisperer
@OrchidWhisperer 7 лет назад
Blanca Acosta if the orchid is doing well and not displaying signs of distress, like wilting leaves, I would not do anything until Spring. That's the best time to repot. Until then, I would mist those aerial roots to help keep the plant hydrated. Hope that helps and have a great day!

Hi How much water ı have to take in the glas? Also ın how many days ı must to change the water and the orchid must stay every time in the watre or some days ı have to take them out of the water? Thanks.
@OrchidWhisperer
@OrchidWhisperer 7 лет назад
Hello! It depends if you're doing full or semi water culture as to how much water you will have them in. With full water culture, about one-third of the roots will be in water and they will remain in the water. (I do give my full water culture orchids a slight dryout time when I change the water once a week...I let them set dry for about 5 or 6 hours.) In semi water culture, two-thirds of the roots will be in water for 2 days, then you will dump the water and let it set dry for 4 or 5 days. Phals do very will in full water culture while cattleyas, vandas, and dendrobiums do well in semi water culture. Thanks for your question and have a wonderful day!

Hi Jean! I grow phalenopsis, dendrobiums, and vandas in water culture. These are the ones I have experience and knowledge with the water culture method. I know that in Belgium you have different species of orchids, so it depends on the ones specifically you are referring to. Thank you for your question and happy growing!

My phalenopsis lost all the leaves,rot crown i believe is,so i clean the roots from the mixture,i spray with O3 and i think to continue with water culture,just to check the remaining roots.My question is,do i see leaves again from this poor plant ?

If you've lost all the leaves due to crown rot, the leaves won't grow back. I don't recommend you keep the plant. Thanks so much for your question, and have a great day!

@OrchidWhisperer
@OrchidWhisperer 6 лет назад
Hi Zz! I don't grow Oncidiums. But I can tell you, wait until Springtime to convert any of your orchids to water culture. Also, if your Oncidiums are in bark, it might be hard to get all the bark off the roots. If that's the case, keep them in bark or the roots will most likely rot. Thanks so much for your question and have a great day! :)

@OrchidWhisperer

Gladiola Rauda do you have ANY roots left at all? If you do, place just the bottom tips in water culture or you can wrap the roots in damp spanghum moss. If you do the moss, keep it just damp. Hope your orchid recovers soon. Thanks for watching and keep me posted.

I would keep those aerial roots. Wrap them in spanghum moss and keep it slightly damp so they will hydrate the plant. I have placed aerial roots in water culture and they do great. Keep it in the same location it has been used to so that it won't have to adjust to a new place. I hope it turns around for you soon!

He doesn't know how to grow but someone said to him to Tie up with rope in a piece of wood or branch of a tree it will continue to grow.. They are not fan of Orchid, doesn't understand much in a village, once I asked that why given to me. Thanks 🙏.Zz.

@OrchidWhisperer 6 лет назад
Hi Zz! At this point, you could choose the media you want to grow in. You can place the Oncidium in orchid bark or NZ sphagnum moss, or you could try water culture. Just be aware, water culture isn't an easy media for beginners to learn to grow in. I tend to vote for a medium-sized orchid bark...Better Gro has a good quality bark that I use. Just remember, the roots won't start growing until Spring. Keep me posted and I wish you great success with your Oncidium! :)
