There are a lot of options out there when it comes to choosing a Unifi Switch. In this video, I go over the methodology I use for switch shopping so you can use it to decide which switch will work best for you! Enjoy!

Great vid as usual. Consider 2 switches to have redundancy preferably with SFP ports to connect via DAC interconnect. Those recessed cans have their place but it’s easy to over stuff them plus the accessories to make use of them can be daunting.

That is not a bad approach at all.... It does add some troubleshooting hops and you have to know which switch you plug everything into - so make sure you have your clients labeled. That should help!

Thank you so much for yet another great video! This one came right on time because I am new to Ubiquity. I just purchased the UDM SE, 3 U6 Pro AP’s my next purchase is the switch. I need your advice please, my home is 3000sq. 2 story given what I have already what switch would you recommend that I get because I’m also into the smart home ecosystem using HomeKit and Home Assistant. Can you also do a video on Patch Panels, Cabling. Thank you for all your time and efforts in bringing quality tutorials cheers!

Thanks for watching... I would do a 24 port minimum, although your home assistant setup will drive this a bit depending on the number of devices you need to plug in... If you can validate moving up the Pro series switch price wise, I would. It future proofs you a bit and will have plenty of power. Of course all of this is blind advice... Hope it helps!

I got the Aggregation Switch with 8 SFP+ connecting a Pro Max 24 port switch (POE and mix of speeds; and lights) and a UDM SE. 3 AP (U6-LR, U6-IW and U6-Mesh via cable). Slight overkill at this point in time but want to learn that stuff before we possible move into a new house. Like reach of APs and POE needs for cable planning. I have a 10Gbe WAN connection (though mainly get 50% of it)

Damn... Can I have some of your internet speeds? And you have to be careful... this is damn fun and sort of becomes a little addicting!

I'm looking at the Ubiquiti USW-Pro-Max-24 , but waiting to until they are in stock , I was looking for a 16 -24 port with a 10gb backbone and having 2.5gbt is nice too. Don't need POE on the big switch because they are going to be on sperate switch , one downstairs for the AP and a camera , one in the loft for outside cameras , and in the garage a camera and AP.

Yeah... I find that if you spend a little more on your switch, that you have a lot of your network covered as things get faster and faster... I think that sounds like a good move on your part!

I chose the 24 port Promax for my home because the 2.5 gig ethernet ports and 24 ports all-in-one a row lined up with my patch panel for a clean looking install

@@erichubbard7754 Don't forget the two 10gb SPF+ port which you can connect to your NAS , that's is if ( a ) you are lucky to get the pro-max switch ( still waiting for then to become in stock ) and ( b ) you have a NAS with a 10gbt port .

Thanks for putting this out! I just bit the bullet and ordered the DM SE, Pro Max 24. I was on the fence in regards to AP's, I decided to not go nuts at this point and stuck with U6 Pro, and U6 In-Wall rather the 7Pro as everything I have is 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.The AP's are relatively inexpensive and easy to swap at a later time. I'm currently waiting on the Pro 8 PoE, (out of stock in Canada) this will be located in the garage to connect 6 PoE cameras (non-Ubiquiti cameras). I currently have an EdgeMax EdgeSwitch 8 150W in my garage that's powering my cameras ( this switch is bullet proof!) is there a way this switch can be incorporated into unifi network along with VLAN's? This switch will be replaced with the Pro 8 PoE if they ever get them in stock. Thanks again for all your videos!

Sounds like a nice setup.. I haven't used the edge switches, but I do like their routers. Unfortunately, I don't think there is anything you can do to incorporate them into Unifi... Different OS's...

It’s always good to get extra ports too. Get a switch with more POE ports than you need and additional non-POE ports than you need because ports fail. Those available ports are backup for when ports fail. You’ll regret buying just the minimum if ports start failing.
@ethernetblueprint
@ethernetblueprint Месяц назад
That is a good point... you hope that your ports don't fail, but it does happen.

Hey Tim. Can you please do a video on recommended ubiquity settings for Sonos
@ethernetblueprint
@ethernetblueprint 2 месяца назад
Hi there. I will try to incorporate some sonos into my videos and I am currently looking to parter with someone in AV that can hopefully help me dive into things a little deeper since I am not an AV person... However, I can tell you this... Typically, when I do setups for users who have Sonos, I put the Sonos gear on the main VLAN where phones and computers connect even though it is a security weakness. Sonos just doesn't play that well with VLANs at the moment and so that makes it difficult to secure them. More to come on that in the future though!

One thing for me is that I wanted to do the UDM SE but I will have 3 AP and 3 cameras at each AP(it works out that way) so I wanted to have a switch at each location but feel like it's hard to find a middleground hardware to support a POE+ and POE and switch at each location without doing something like Enterprise 8 POE - but feel like if i'm doing an Enterprise 8 POE I almost don't need the UDM SE, but then there's not anything that has just the remaining functionality that UDM SE has - extra switching/poe

So you were looking to put a switch at each location where there was a AP and Camera? Was that to get extra ports at each location or for something else? I'm not following why the switches are needed at each spot...
@realMysta
@realMysta 26 дней назад
@@ethernetblueprint Yeah, it's just something i've always done as sometimes I will find some reason to have another device plugged in at that location, so instead of running 2 cables to a location i just run 1, and my thought was with POE i could power virtually anything small with that same switch(especially low voltage things like lights) but seems like they just don't really support that yet
@ethernetblueprint
@ethernetblueprint 25 дней назад
I see... that makes more sense. As long as you don't need POE++ or 10Gb, I would look at the new 8 Port Ultra Switch. They power can be adjusted based on whichever power supply you buy and at $159, (w/60W PS) they make nice little network extension switches with 8 ports of POE+ power...
@realMysta
@realMysta 24 дня назад
@@ethernetblueprint Yeah for now I think i'm just going to run independent lines to that one location and the second(where my PC is, I want to do a 16 Pro Max POE, as well as same alongside the dream machine, but unfortunately will basically just be hoping I get them when they are in stock. Given I'm doing U7 Pro I may as well make sure the lines out do 2.5gbe and future proof for the most part, I also am hoping they announce a NAS that I can use to extend my PC storage(And maybe double as NVR?!

What I would really like is in five minutes a homeowner list of what to buy. Start from scratch. Buy this. Then buy these cameras. Then tell me how to link to Apple Home.

I’m not sure there is a one size fits all solution out there. About the time I made that video, someone else would be ripping me a new one saying that it doesn’t work in their situation. If you want some extra help, you could email me at tim@ethernetblueprint.com and I could maybe offer you some free advice.
