I highly recommended the Daiwa Certate I got myself the 2500 size for Xmas and its handled Hali and perch very well. the drag and smoothness is amazing.I do also recommend the Saltist MQ its much lighter than the Gen 1 saltiest and less expansive than the certate iv landed many many WSB with the reel with zero issues and 100% confidence.I stick with 2500 size as I go super light 10lb to connection knot to 8lb . I do use a 7'6 rod for my local waters, all that is needed .

Great video! My set up for the past 15-20 years is an 8’6” Okuma salmon rod ( MF ), a Shimano Sedona 2500-3000, 10lb Izorline xxx copolymer, and all I throw are Lucky Craft 110’s and 115’s. Board shorts and barefoot, an old rag, a fanny pack with a couple of extra Flash Minnows, needle nose pliers, and my phone in it… if I’m fishing around or on rock I’ll sport a pair of old Vans or my surfing booties… light weight and mobile is how I like it🎣🏄🏼‍♂️🤙🏻

@@BenjieKimFishing We’re all well, thanks! Yeah when I was researching mono to braid knots I quickly realized there was no way I could do the FG as I only have two arms (LOL!) so tried tons of others. Many are extremely similar but the Alberto I found easiest to remember and not too hard to tie (correctly!) with practice. Key to all is sufficient wraps, not overlapping wraps and most importantly good strong tightening down. I use two wooden sticks wrapped with duct tape to wrap the lines and pull/synch the lines down. Otherwise they can slip.

Great informative video mate! I was fishing for sooooo many years without knowing all this, to say that at one point i was using a jigging rod for casting lures from shore😂 Theoretically the saltist 4k is equivalent to certate 6K to have the same amount of line capacity, a Certate 4k would be more comparable to a Saltist 3K.

I use a penn Fierce 4 5000 reel with a 9’ breakwater medium heavy. Can’t remember the action or the other specs off the top of my head. But I use 15lb mono with my lucky craft and it works pretty good. But my biggest struggle with my other rods and reels is not casting far enough in the Del Mar surf
@BenjieKimFishing
@BenjieKimFishing 11 месяцев назад
That's interesting that your setup casts the 110 well as I would think its on the heavier side. However, the biggest issue there might be fatigue as I'm guessing the 5000 Fierce might a bit heavy. 15 pound mono is probably helping with your casts. 15 to 20 pound braid is ideal for casting, 30 pound braid still gets the job done. Any rod that has a line rating between 1/4 to 3/4 or 1/2 to 1 oz... and a fast action should get the job done. In theory haha. If you have a rod within those specs, the odds are that a 2.5k to 3k reel would probably pair best. Just my .02 but either way, glad to hear you are doing great out there. Keep up the great work!
@maybeandrew7933
@maybeandrew7933 11 месяцев назад
@@BenjieKimFishing yes fatigue is the biggest struggle I have with it. It’s a medium action and I can say after like 40 casts I’m pretty tired and need breaks after every 8-13 casts after that. Seeing how you’ve been doing it I realized I’m not casting nearly as far as I should. Probably anywhere from 20-30 yards max. After seeing this video I feel like I’m gonna be heavily going into a better setup with line and rod setup.

May I add the fact of why 20 lb braid line is OK for an 8 to 15lb rated line rod. 20 lb braid is the diameter (give or take) of 8 or 10 lb mono line (Depending on manufacturer). Using that 20 lb braid actually plugs in perfectly into the equation of have a well balanced setup. IMPO
@BenjieKimFishing
@BenjieKimFishing Год назад
This is such and excellent comment, thanks so much for adding that. In hindsight, I wish I would've addressed this. Also IMO Drag setting is also critical so as to not overwhelm the rod. The TRL 903 for example has great sensitivity and feel but if someone has a pinned drag and is high sticking, it might not end well lol. Tight lines!

Hey, @ Benjie Kim Fishing ! Thank you, most of your info is so good for me and I know that you are always trying to help us out here. But, I'm actually MORE confused about selecting my new rod now, more than ever, because I'm aware that you run 20-30lb braid on a rod that doesn't appear to be rated for it? I do want to run 30lb braid while fishing for halibut on the S.D. surf too but have a budget of right around $100 so, can't afford the Phenix rods. I've spent truly, more than SEVERAL hours looking at rods on Amazon according to what you've taught in your videos but you just said to select 8-15 or so line rating. Please, help me understand what I am misunderstanding ? How/why can we run 30lb braid on a rod rated for 8-15lbs ?
@BenjieKimFishing
@BenjieKimFishing Год назад
Hey there, this is a FANTASTIC question and concern, meaning it's not an easy question to answer haha, but I will try my best! When I say 8 to 15, I am referring to the mono/fluoro part of the connection. Generally speaking, your braid backing will be more or less double the top shot you are using. There are different angles for why this might make sense, one being the line diameter of braid is much thinner than mono/fluoro. Therefore, 30 pound braid will likely be the same or similar diameter as 15 pound fluoro...so if your rod is rated 10 to 20 pounds, in theory, your rod should be able properly cast 30 pound braid really well. For me, I've always set my drag according to my top shot (the weakest line in my connection). So if I'm using 15 pound fluoro leader, my drag is set approximately at 5 pounds. I would not set my drag to my braid backing, which is going to be 20 to 30 pounds (drag setting approximately 7 to 8 pounds), as that would probably be more than my rod can handle. Some rods give a specific braid rating which makes it easy to follow. For me, if a rod does not specify a braid rating, the braid I use will generally be double the rods given rating. So if a rod has a line rating of 8 to 15 (and does not specify that as braid), then I will be using braid that is around 15 to 30 pounds as I consider that to be the general equivalent in line diameter (but not necessarily breaking strength). This is just how I've always operated but I can't say for certain this is the "right way." I actually googled this when I saw your comment and it seems like what I'm trying to explain is more or less correct. But the world of rod and reel ratings is pretty darn subjective, which is part of why all this might be confusing.... I do apologize for any confusion and reading your comment helped me realize I could have been more specific in the way I presented the information in this video... tight lines!

@BenjieKimFishing
@BenjieKimFishing Год назад
Hey Anthony, definitely the weight is part of the equation for me but the biggest thing is how a specific reel pairs with a specific rod. I'm typically a finesse guy so my rods tend to be on the lighter side, which is why I lean towards lighter reels. So my recommendations go hand in hand with my personal fishing style.
