I'm currently writing my undergrad dissertation, and I would 100% recommend having an idea of what you want to write about before speaking to a tutor or supervisor - preferably something more specific than a vague theme. In our last meeting, my supervisor was telling me about other students she's worked with in the past who came to her with only the vaguest idea for their dissertation, something like "Fascism in Italian cinema", which was then a real struggle to narrow down to the final topic. It's not the end of the world if you're in that situation, but it does make life easier.

you know, I was just thinking about the topic I chose for my BA dissertation, and I was disheartened because my tutor said she doesn't like it, because "everything has already been written about it" (I definitely disagree), and suddenly your video came out and now I'm sooo relieved by your words! Now I only have to understand if I want to prove my tutor wrong, change my topic, or change my tutor! Anyway, this video improved my mood and I'm really thankful :)

I have to get my PhD topic underway soon, so it was nice to see this.:) I agree with your advice - it seems as if the same is true in Scotland and the U.S. in regards to dissertation studies/research. Another great video!

When you said "8- to 20,000 words!" I was like "oh man, 8? That's pretty avant-garde. Seems like a lot of pressure for 8 words..." before I realised you meant 8,000 :') hahaha

8000 words is only about 30 - 40 pages. That might seem a lot, but considering the time you have to finish it, it's not that bad. Although some people aren't very fast writers. I'm really just speaking for myself here.

I'm at the broad topic stage of my research currently, and really wish I had my thesis already. Right now I have more questions than answers, but studying the sexuality of women in an early christian Italy will do that. You know how that's like. I want to say thank you for studying women in antiquity, because I'd be lying if I didn't say that it inspired me to do the same.

I did (for a month or so) - It was mainly because of one of the lecturers who basically spend the first two weeks of courses telling us to already start thinking about where we want our degree to take us and how our Final paper & Internship would help us do that and giving half the class an existential crisis. ~on an unrelated note, am I the only one who learned about citing and bibliographies in highschool, they aren't that hard?

I actually went about my dissertations in completely different ways. So I'm a biology student and I'm currently doing a masters in biodiversity and systematics. For my undergrad dissertation I wanted to do something focused on conservation biology, preferably on big cats, and I had a specific supervisor in mind. With the help of my supervisor we narrowed it down to a topic I felt intrigued by and she felt comfortable supervising (she works with foxes, not cats). The dissertation ended up being a review article on conservation conflicts between humans and genus Panthera (lions, tigers, leopards, snow leopards and jaguars). For my master's dissertation I really wanted to do something on sea turtle population genetics (that was a no go) or where I got to spend lots of time scuba diving. I found a supervisor specialised in fish and started working on a project (skeletal development in small fish and how it differs between species) and a grant proposal to fund my field work. My grant proposal was rejected and I didn't feel like doing a similar project just sat at a museum so I looked elsewhere. I picked my current dissertation, which is a comparison of DNA between modern and historical bumblebee specimens, not because I love insects but because I wanted to work in *that* specific research group. The research group work with paleogenetics and ancient DNA and is one of the most talked about science research groups in recent years. Writing my dissertation with them will give me valuable contacts, an impressive cv and an in if I want to continue with a PhD.

Great video, I'm currently writing my dissertation and i'm doing YA dystopian literature, talking about heroines, government control and romance elements for the 3 chapters. I chose based on what I love. That's the tip I tell everyone, make sure you like it, because your going to be spending so much time researching and writing it you don't want to be on the fence as you go into it!

This was so helpful! I'm actually due to start a masters degree this year, but my undergrad degree was Lit with Creative Writing and my dissertation was a short story for the creative writing half, so I am actually going into writing an essay of such length and complexity completely blind which is slightly terrifying! But this definitely gave me a hand in terms of thinking about where to start framing my ideas so thank you :)

My dissertation or third year study is based around "Attitudes and treatment towards homelessness and the homeless community" and I'm hoping afterwards to collate this with the research I have done away from university on "social and criminal laws and homelessness" with the goal of hopefully influencing changes in the law which I believe could really be improved!! :)

funny story: a guy in my Masters group did a presentation on his topic and it was the Orphic gold tablets, and his presentation was basically saying that he wanted to find answers to what they were used for, etc. I was sat there like "dude a PhD wouldn't answer those questions!".

This is super useful. I found my undergraduate thesis pretty easy to come up with and the main thing that changed was I couldn't cover all the time periods that I wanted (it was on cleopatra's portrayal). I've just started my masters and I'm now finding it super difficult to come up with something that I want to write 15-20k words on

My dissertation has changed, Covid made it impossible for me to conduct the study I truely wanted to do, which I knkw would have demonstrated my hypothesis well. I then changed it to integrating self efficacy and subjective well being to facilitate success. My supervisor has now stated I need 3 I.V's 😑 wondering whether to implement loneliness as my 3rd I.V. I'm having to conduct this study using scales and tasks due to Covid and I am struggling finding a study to find what tasks to use, ideas welcome 😊

This is such a great video! Really helpful :) I have an extra question though. I am currently doing a double undergrad degree in philosophy and religion and I want to go on to do my masters in biblical theology. I really want to write my dissertation on philosophy of ethics but considering I want to pursue a religion path, should I be choosing a religious topic to write my dissertation on?

The only person who can really answer that is you and your personal tutor/supervisor. I would ask them :). I can't imagine doing a philosophy dissertation would exclude you from pursuing further religious studies but you might have cause to write academic cvs, personal statements and proposals in the future to do with your chosen academic career path that may require you to provide proof of your expertise and you might want to be able to use your undergraduate dissertation as proof of this.

Whoops! I'm awful at replying. I did a biblical theology undergrad a few years ago but my final dissertation didn't get counted since I had to drop out for health reasons a few months before the end of my course. But I do have work from that with good grades (usually 70 or over) so potentially I could use some of that. It is something to think about though. I will talk to my tutor after the summer and work out what direction to head in. Gotta start thinking about finals for this year... yikes!

I am interested in Near Eastern religions contemporaneous with the Bible and a little before. From 2000 BCE to 600 BCE . This will be a BA thesis in the history department at my school. There is so much I have studied, I have a hard time deciding a narrow enough focus. Also whether there would be sufficient material about religious ideas in Assyriology. Thanks for your thoughts.

Do you mean my PhD thesis :)? There is no dissertation in a PhD just a final thesis that I will write over the 5 years of my PhD studies. I've only written about a 10th of it at the moment so I don't have much to say at the moment aha - it will be around 100,000 words by the end.
