Great video guys for the beginners. You touched on it slightly but the Twist is the best bet due to it matching up well with lane conditions that would most likely be played on by beginners (as opposed to sport and challenge shots).
My first reactive ball was a storm soniq I absolutely love that ball when the lanes start to really wear down still get consistent reaction from it to this day
My first reactive ball: Ebonite Rhino I actually just chose this ball b/c it looked the coolest on the shelf. Not till a year later did I learn this ball was actually a good choice for my first ball.
My first bowling ball was actually a Tzone purple spare ball, i wasnt that knowledgeable into the game later i got my first reactive ball which was a tropical breeze red/black which was a very good choice for me..later as i got serious abt the game i turned into a two handed player and now use the Pitch black urethane which is a very good ball for me as i have very strong arms so i tend to blast the ball into the lane and the pitch black gives me that forgiveness' with my back end to reach the pocket in the right timing while playing on the outside part of the lane
I actually got a halo vision from a friend as my very first ball, as you can imagine it was really hard to adjust to it because of the really aggressive hook but once I got it down it was all strikes from there
My first reactive bowling ball is a Columbia 300 Freeze 12 pound ($142). I just bought a Radical innovator 14 pound and love the Innovator. Worth every bit of the $243 I had it drilled for. I also just got a Columbia 300 WD Patriot 14 pound to go with the other 2 as a spare ball ($105). If you are a beginner, like me, then pay attention to this video. Urethane will be the next to go into the collection.
My first reactive ball was and is currently the Roto Grip Hyped Pearl blue-black. I believe this ball for me when starting bowling had a really strong back end hook, making it quite the challenge, but I learned and adapted and have become quite comfortable with it. I would not recommend it to beginners and to start with something with a little lower hook potential. Good luck!
Because weight is usually a covered topic in most other basic videos, but I’ll describe it as: weight mainly only matters on comfort, not too heavy or light where you can’t control, lighter the ball; more deflective and less power, more speed, heavier = less deflective, more power, less speed
My first ball is a purple slingshot. I'm honestly now just trying to learn more in depth beside just how to play so haha I'm late to the game. Though I was gifted a Columbia 300 so I guess that would be my first reactive ball.
My first bowling ball was a storm axiom pearl because I know an extremely experienced bowler that was kind enough to give me my first ball. It’s a little to aggressive for me as a newbie though.
My bowling ball I use is the Brunswick igniter soild 14 pound bowling ball with reality soild 3.0 I use in my adult bowling league now and my radical the spy plastic spare bowling ball,14 pound bowling ball with dynamic core technology in the bowling ball more hitting power more spare at time I'm 31 years old born February 13 1991 so 3 years I been in my Thursday night bowling league from 2018-till 2021-22 present but been in a youth junior bowling league team since 2003-12 I live in superior Wisconsin the name of the bowling alley I bowl at is village lanes in superior Wisconsin
My first ball was a purple Brunswick Rhino pro. I began my no-thumb style delivery with this ball in the late 90's. My all time high score of 267 is with this ball and still stands today.
@@jasonkelly623 I think you have me confused with someone else by the same name. I don't hold any records that I'm aware of. But thanks for reaching out.
Tropical and it did pretty well (two handed here) and if it were lighter I would have done pretty good. The ball was 15 and I think 14 is where I need to be 13 is a little too light
Man. Where was this video 3 days ago when I purchased a Storm Drive ball. :/ I just started really getting into bowling. Started as a two hand bowler back in 2015 when I saw Belmo in Dude Perfect and was amazed by his technique. Started falling in love with it again (2 months ago) and got more serious with it. I average a 170-180. I like curving the ball. If there’s any tips y’all can give for maybe getting into a bowling league that would be great!
Contact you local pro shops and see which centers have good bowlers. Try to get in with a league that has people that bowl tournaments as their bowlers can help you develop your game and thought processes.
First ball overall was an Ebonite Maxim (plastic ball). I bowled varsity in HS with it and got more than a few 200+ games with that alone. First reactive was an Ebonite Ice. Our house lanes were old school wood, and considered the toughest lanes in the conference to shoot on.
First resin ball was a Brunswick Attitude 2. LOVED that ball, shot my first 250 game and 670 set with it. Was way more controllable than what is out now. Something I want to see make a comeback is Particle coverstocks. I had an Ebonite XXXCel and it hooked on EVERYTHING. There was one night in league where there was 10 more feet of oil than usual (an INSANE 55' instead of the usual 45' for house shots) and the 220+ average guys all struggled to shoot 500s. I shot a 640 or so with the XXXCel.
Particle balls really dug into the lane and hooked a lot! The downside is that they cracked way more often than traditional reactive resin balls. A lot of the newer Hammer balls have carbon fibre built into the coverstock, which somewhat replicates what particle balls used to do, but are far less likely to crack.
This is a great video for beginners to see. This similar advice from my local pro helped me learn. My first reactive ball was a Hammer Taboo Jet Black. I miss that ball, it was a beautiful strike ball once I learned to control it.
I've been throwing high end top tier reactive balls since they came into play in the mid 90s. I've been bowling in leagues for 30 years. My highest average in league was a 219. I recently met a guy who just got into bowling less than 2 years ago and despite being almost 50 years old he's already thrown 2 perfect (300) games. It was hard for me to accept that I've been an avid bowler my entire life and I've NEVER thrown a 300. I've been very close almost more times than I can count. But I've yet to throw a 300. With that said I started asking myself why? Why is it that this guy who just got into bowling, who isn't even in that good shape, could throw two 300 games before I could even throw my first despite me being 100000x more experienced? The only thing I could think of is that he's been throwing a very low end ball that has an easily predictable hook. Where as I've always been pressured into thinking "MORE HOOK = GOOD." And "LESS HOOK = BEGINNER". He's throwing a low end ball by Storm called the Tropical Storm or something like that. I could be a little off with the name but I know the word Tropical is in the name. He never moves towards the left side of the lane. Which means his angles are very basic and he is more of a straight up shooter. His ball gets into a very early roll and just nails the pocket almost every single time he throws the ball. It's no where near as pretty as a PRO that can hook the entire lane, but he gets the job done EVERY WEEK in leagues. He's at a 233 average right now. I however always felt pressured to have the meanest, craziest hook/angles etc. Because of that I'm convinced I've suffered as a bowler. It's not to say I'm not a really good bowler.. because I definitely am. But there's a lot of truth to the phrase "straighter is greater!" I currently own 6 different balls and most of them are solid reactive resin balls. My urethane (PURPLE HAMMER) even hooks wayyyy more than his Tropical Storm. I purchased it because I felt I needed something to allow me to play a little straighter. Especially since I just came back to the sport after almost a decade of not being in any leagues. So I figured a urethane ball will allow me to do just that. Play straighter! However, my Purple Hammer hooks 40-60% more than his Tropical Storm and requires me to move quite a bit more left than he does as the night goes on. I'm going to get an entry level ball that has a very predictable arc and I think I'll finally be able to throw my first 300. Because as far as my form, my knowledge of the sport, my release and everything else about the sport is way more advanced than he is as a bowler. But again... he's thrown two 300 games and I've yet to throw my first. What I'm ultimately trying to say is this... Don't EVER allow another bowler to pressure you into thinking a monster hook is necessary. Do what makes you comfortable. So long as you can hit the pocket consistently your scores will naturally improve. I'm not saying that we shouldn't have a tank (asymmetrical ball) with a strong coverstock in our arsenal. But don't overlook the much more weaker "beginner" balls. Don't even consider them as "beginner balls" because as soon as you label them as such, you'll feel like you shouldn't use them once you become a better bowler. I know 6 or 7 guys personally that've thrown a handful of 300 games and they were all using VERY WEAK bowling balls that don't have much hook/flare. 😎
GREAT POST, you just answered your own question. Im 60 years young, bowled for 44 years now. Was know as a cranker in the 80s, lol. No where near what the kids do now. Anyway your always taught to play the lanes. What does this mean? A house shot is dry on the outside part of the lane, 8 to the ditch. So a high reactive ball will need to start in more oil sent right but not to far right [right handed], to play the house shot tighter to hold the line. So a straighter line with a lower end ball will give you the pocket more, just bump the oil line to the dry and your in pocket. I was sick last month, so i threw my MIX urthane ball, [ spare ball], up 9 to board 7 at break point and avg 215 for 7 sets of league. I also use a 14lb ball, 15 mph as of now. I used to throw a purple rhino 15 lbs, and have most of my 18 300s with that ball. My high avg of 233 for a season. Not near that now, older and health conditions, 215 avg. Im going to get another low end ball that has more backend but the ability to still stay straighter still , a rhino, camo hustle, twist.....etc. Its fine if you like to see the ball hook a lot and cover 20 boards, but is it you that wants that or the lanes? The ability to change hand positions for more or less revs comes to mind. I see so many bowlers hooking at spares where a straight ball to cut down angles raises your precentages. Its good to have a hooking game and a straighter game in bowling......it better to know which one to use when! Good luck to all and good bowling to everyone. Never stop learning!
@@jamesm8360Great reply! I just started bowling 🎳 and am looking forward to getting my first ball, which, incidentally the same as he's recommending in this video, Brunswick Twist Lavender and Lime. I almost thought about getting the Motiv Laser Sniper because I want a ball to go straight as I'm a straight bowler and trying to work on my approach, not trying to over grip it when holding, where my shoulder is, and the release and placement of the ball, so I was concerned the Twist would have too much hook, but after watching this and talking with my Pro Shop, I'm feeling confident that this'll be my first ball. You did a great explaining things in your reply which will help improve my game, thanks!
Thanks for the information of ball selection, it's very useful to me to understand type bowling ball in between. My younger son would like to try bowling so your video is very helpful for him.
My first reactive was a Columbia Beast. Great video too. I had the older brother to the Twist years ago(Slingshot). Only ball I ever threw 300 with. It unfortunately cracked. Hopefully the Twist will be just as good.
Over 10 years ago I started with plastic. Then I got a tropical heat!!! They don’t even make them anymore. I agree beginners should use entry level reactive like twist or tropical surge or whatever it is
My first ball was a Power Groove reactive lol. Second was a Storm Hot Rod SS super sport. Most people probly have no idea what those balls are. And I’m still in my 20s lol
Great video! Bought my first ball in December 2020 a 900Global Aspect (used from the pro shop.) Next was a Storm Axiom Pearl. I think A lower end ball would do me better. Maybe time to add a twist!
When I stopped bowling, the prior two balls I owned was the Dick Weber 5-Star and the Johnny Petraglia LT-48; both 16 pounds. Now, I'm trying to get back into bowling and I was told to get the 13 pound Storm Fever Pitch (I'm now 70+ years old). Apparently, this is too light for my ball speed for any hook to happen. So, it's a great spare ball. The Twist seems to be the ball for me to get and I'll probably go up a couple of pounds. What do you think? Also, is Brunswick the only brand to have these entry level reactive performance balls?
My 1st ball in 1967 was a dick Weber AMF 3 dot classic .At age 13 then I had a 175 avg. I think it was rubber. I just gave it away last year. My next in 1974 was a Hammer Urethane which I still have .It was drilled finger tip no grips. . I never used grips. would you suggest ? I I could use a new ball (LOL). I havent bowled in many years & would like to start up again at age 64.
first ball Ebonite Maxim IV, first urethane Columbia black U-Dot, first reactive.. NU LINE XCALIBUR! that's right, patient zero, the granddaddy of them all baby!
My first was the red and purple twist. But the ball was drilled completely wrong for my span, finger size, and pap. Gave up on the twist, but thinking I should retry it for dry lane ball
I just recently got into bowling with some friends and bought my first ball about 2 weeks ago. I actually got two though. The Columbia 300 The Beast and the Storm Ice. I think they make a good combo for someone like me who just bowls recreationally and I just got my PR yesterday at 259.
@7:40 some youtube channels tell me to focus on speed (idk if they're referencing push, forward rotationg or both), others on the hook. Which one is it? As a newbie, I'm tantalized AF.
It was a solid dark green Track bowling ball that my dad handed down to me, probably from the mid to late 90s. If anyone can help me figure out the name of the bowling ball it would be much appreciated!
i have never thrown a reactive resin ball. I have also never had a new ball. I have been using an old hammer urathane ball thats a little too heavy for me. I really wanna get a new ball and get into leagues just dont have the finances to do so right now.
Im saving up for a bowling ball and wanted to see what there is. I use house balls alot, and I hook them very strongly. any ideas on what type I should get? I'm told to try one that has less traction so the ball hooks later, than earlier so it doesn't miss the pins
been so long I can't even remember, probably one of the rhinos, . I have never bought any "high-end reactive balls", the only expensive ball i have ever bought was the OG pink hammer $200, that was worth the money i paid for it when it first came out, it hit like a freight train and it was urethane
Loved that pink hammer:) had blue light blue pink and dark blue track 10. Pink was used any time possible but it was on navy base and often you'd have to"play left" which now days is about the track lol
Just starting to get more actively into bowling. I'd been using a 10lb Ebonite Gyro Magnum plastic I picked up somewhere around 10 yrs ago. I just swapped it out for a 14lb Vapor Zone Hybrid as my first reactive ball.
My first reactive that I bought new was my ghost pearl, I have the black and red black widow pearl as well but it was a hand me down from my old shop teacher from high school
How do you like it so far? I've been wanting to get that exact one as shown in the video-the Lavender and Lime Brunswick Twist, but was previously concerned that it might hook and I'm a straight shooter with no plans on playing a hooking game.
My first "real" bowling ball I got (that wasn't a kid's ball or a hand-me-down) was a Columbia 300 Freeze. Red and blue swirls. This was ages ago, maybe 10-12 years or so? Other than that, I have an ancient urethane ball my dad gave me prior to the Freeze. It's an old maroon colored Hammer. It's probably 25-30 years old. Also have a plastic ball of course.
Srry for the long essay 😂 The very first REAL bowling ball I got that can actually carry on the pocket is the urethane hammer I needed a new ball bc the one I was using at tht time was complete GARBAGE so I bought it off him bc he couldn’t figure the ball out but the first night I bowled with it I had it all figured out 😂 my new highest score in bowling is a 255 an im honestly working my ass off on trying to go pro but with this ball its drilled for a left hander an im a right 2 finger bowler 🤷♂️ I haven’t had a problem with the ball yet I just keep having problems with my release point and maintaining my ball speed an also forgetting to follow thru my shots an tht leads to me getting very pissed bc I forgot tht I forgot to follow thru on my shots an once I sped the speed up a bit an followed thru its golden. Yesterday I had bowling I bowled a 163,201,and I think 181 im not sure on the first or last game but im thinking thats right I also shot a 532 total pin count (not bad) but (not very good) uk?
This is super informative. Before I was just going with how it felt. Now I understand the difference between my AMF Sumo (urethane) and my Pyramid Path Rising (reactive). I got super into bowling in 2017 but stopped around 2018. Best PR is 237 with an average of 130-150. Thinking of getting back into it now.
I was in a youth league and when I graduated I couldn't joing the adult league where I lived because it interfered with church times. I'm now getting back into it like 6 years later and I didn't realize how much I missed bowling. Try to drag a friend with you and just start going to bowl a couple games a week. Good luck :)
I’m in a school league and I’m bowling 200 average with house balls and I just realized that I should probably get my own ball after three years of bowling in high school
