Some great tips on how to choose the first Stand Up Paddleboard when you are getting started. Kevin Fung, the shop manager goes over all the things to consider before buying a SUP. Get educated on the dimension, volume and shape features that matter for you before wasting money on a board that is not right for you. SUP's are NOT one size fits all and keep in mind that you get what you pay for. At Blue Planet we have a huge selection of boards ranging from inexpensive starter packages and used boards for those on a budget to high end, high performance boards for expert riders and everything in between. Come to Blue Planet, the SUP HQ and get some expert advice on picking the right board for YOU.

CHOOSING THE BEST STAND UP PADDLE BOARD
Aloha SUP’ers and mahalo for dropping in with Blue Planet Surf. One of the most frequent inquiries we get at our shop in Honolulu, Hawaii is how does one determine what size and type of board is right for them. As avid water enthusiasts, our main objective at Blue Planet Surf is to provide sufficient info to potential paddlers, so that they are equipped with the best knowledge to make the best decision when buying their first or additional boards for their quiver. With the right knowledge, one can choose the ideal board to suit their surfing and paddling needs and ultimately have more fun on the water.
Thank you to our customers for voting Blue Planet as Hawaii’s Best Stand Up Paddle Shop.
12 BASIC POINTS
Below you’ll find 12 images and graphs that will help you with the complex process of finding the right board(s) for you.
As a surfer of many years (bodysurf, bodyboard, shortboard, longboard, and Stand Up Paddleboarding), I personally consider over 100 different variables when I’m choosing my own boards. For a first time SUP buyer, it would be excessive to consider so many variables, so we wanted to simplify the process for our customers.
The boys at the shop and I were able to narrow a potential paddler’s focus down to 12 basic points which we use at our shop in Hawaii every day to help our customers find the perfect stand up paddle board for them.
Keep in mind that surfing and paddling needs are very specific to the rider and their locale, so our images and graphs may not depict info that is 100% accurate for you and where you plan to use the board.
If you have any questions about it contact Blue Planet Surf in Honolulu, Hawaii; or consult your nearest SUP/surf shop for more info.
First and foremost, the paddler must consider what type of paddling they intend to do. By determining if an individual will be surfing, racing, cruising or doing a hybrid of those, they will have already narrowed their board selection down.
In general, the shorter and smaller the board is, the more surfable and maneuverable it will be, while the longer and more streamlined the design is, the more efficiently the board will cover distance and the better the board will be for racing. For cruising, one should consider boards that are in between those two spectrums, and skew their choice either shorter or longer depending on how they want their board to perform.
Height and weight, along with skill level, are the next big factors an individual should pay close attention to. Because paddle boarding requires the board to be on top of the water at all times (different from shortboards where the board may be fully submerged when not planing on a wave), height and weight dictate the amount of floatation the board will need to offer.
With Aloha,
Kevin Fung

The video was very well produced, and offers clear explanations of what to look for in a first SUP and beyond. I know a bit about surfboard and windsurf shapes, but am new to SUP. All of my past knowledge, while handy, was totally unnecessary. On balance (forgive pun), very easy to understand. Thanks for putting this up for the SUP'ing public. Cheers.

First video I've found which actually explains board physics instead of just praising racing boards. Very helpful! Now I know that for few-hour weekend activities fat board with round ends actually advantageous, since you don't need to balance it as much and speed is not a concern anyway.

Very informative!!!! Most information I have come across so for about what you need to know about choosing a board just explains that you’ll need to know what you’ll be doing on the board, your height/weight and experience level that’s pretty much it and leaves it at that. It doesn’t explain how to choose a board from there using that information.

I guess I need lots of practice. I am a beginner with a volume requirement range of 235-321 according to your chart. I am 5'8" so the weight is plumpness! I purchased a Red Paddle 12'6" Sport that has a volume rating of 350L. It is thirty inches wide and I am challenged. I can stay on knees all day but standing up and, over I go. This model has the side battens too.
@blueplanetsurf
@blueplanetsurf 7 лет назад
I sounds like the issue for you is the stability, not the volume. The board has plenty of volume for you but is probably too narrow to be standing comfortably on. We would probably recommend something around 36"-38" wide for someone your size and weight, like our Boss model: blueplanetsurf.com/products/108-x-36-boss-2017/ or even the 40" wide Sumo model if you want something very stable: blueplanetsurf.com/products/112-x-40-sumo-2016/ You can try to just tough it out and keep practicing. With enough grit, eventually your balance should improve enough to be able to stand on your 12'6 x 30" board.

An incredibly informative and useful video. Today was my very first day SUPing and it was... interesting. I had done lots of research as to the type of board I should eventually get but I was focusing a lot on board thickness vs board volume. This video - and the volume diagram - was extremely helpful. Thank you so much for posting.
@blueplanetsurf

Hi James, yes board thickness is simply a measurement at one point of the board and does not give you much information about volume distribution. Good to hear the video was informative! 🤙🏼

@blueplanetsurf
@blueplanetsurf 6 лет назад
Hi Blue Pitbull, iSUPs are good on lakes and rivers and for taking your dog, not so much in surf. We have no experience with Black Fin boards but they look decent on their website. It might be good to research unbiased reviews or stick with a well known brand. Most issues with iSUP's start a few years down the line when the board is or of warranty.

How heavy should a rigid board be? I'm in the UK and want to upgrade from a isup to a rigid, to use in surf etc. Finding hard to find traders in UK for surfable sups. I found a board called bamboo bullet by fatstick boards, only the details say its 20kg, that sounds a little heavy to me, would that be difficult to right if it upturned (my isup often does but I guess wind is part of that) Are you able to comment on the above board? I'm still a beginner, but at the point of finding a isup frustrating on the sea/in waves. Or any recommendations of boards I could find a trader that is shipping in or to the UK?

What if your board volume is 325L but you're in need of 205 per weight. Would the 325 be good so you can have an extra person on your board?
@blueplanetsurf
@blueplanetsurf 2 года назад
Yes you can carry additional people on board but more volume does not necessarily make the board more stable as having a lower center of gravity and being closer to the water surface makes it easier to balance.

Are hard plastic board any good in your opinion? They seem like they might be able to take some abuse.
@blueplanetsurf
@blueplanetsurf 6 лет назад
Yes, boards like our Tuf Tech models (fiberglass with PC/ABS skin) are a great entry level choice, durable, light weight and inexpensive. Check this video where Kevin demonstrates how tough these boards are with a baseball bat: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0bWLF3rQgWk.html Roto Molded plastic boards are usually quite heavy and can work well as a entry level board if you don't need to transport them much, like if you can store it on a dock.

Great video! I've been riding shortboards on and off for 30 years +. I've never tried it but I want to get into surfing SUP's. Did some research but after watching this vid I'm thinking I want an even smaller board than I initially thought. Figure most of the time I will be surfing anything from knee high mush to shoulder high + (when I get better). I am 5'8" and 150 lbs and want something that I can maneuver well but that will paddle well (balance/speed). I know there will be a learning curve but I'll probably be doing this at least 2-3x per week. What dims would you recommend? Which of your guys boards in particular would you recommend? You have a shop in Maui? Thanks in advance!

Hi Rick, our main recommendation is to demo some boards first so you get an idea of how small a board you can balance on. You don't want a tiny board that is just a struggle as it will take you longer to learn the basics. You could go short and wide for better balance when you are starting out without giving up on too much maneuverability. One of our fun surf series models should work well for you: 9'4 x 33 Fun stick 9'2 x 32 Sweet Spot 8'8 x 31 Allgood For more details, visit: blueplanetsurf.com/?s=fun+surf+series We currently don't have a dealer on Maui but can ship boards by Young Brothers, no problem. Aloha!

Hi there, I'm a bit lost... I would like to buy my first board, but I don't really understand how to choose the right one... I'm 163cm tall and weight about 51-53kg... I'm looking for all round board for use on lakes, calm rivers and small sea waves just for recreational purpose... All the boards I was looking at had so big volumes, so I have no idea how to choose or if I should look at kids boards 😅... I've already tried aquamarina fusion the older 10'4" (290l) model on the sea, but I struggled to go streight, maneuvering wasn't easy and with width 30" I really felt my legs afterwards... on the other hand aqua marina super trip 12'2" x 32" (400l) was so much easier to handle for me, but I felt it's just too big even if I was with my daughter (+20kg)... could you please recommend a board or just dimensions - lenght, width, thicknes, volume, which could fit me? I really don't know and I would appreciate your help... Thank you very much...

We don’t sell inflatable boards, so if you are looking to buy an iSUP, best to contact a shop that does. For touring, something like our 11‘6 x 31 Polynesian Touribg board would work well for you:

The 9‘8 would be a good Allrounder. For more info also watch this video:
