That's my favorite tire too! Everyone else are idiots. But we're not. Do you use golden brownish oil too? I find that the best. Great minds think alike, and so do ours.

For those which are scare from the increase diameter of the fatty, you could get the same ride height and similar steering geometrie by lifting your forks 10 to 15mm from your triple clamp

Just installed a new GT216AA fatty this past week (along with a GT333 110/100 rear). Been using them for years now and are my go to front. Yes, they can grab ruts a bit more but they make up for it everywhere else. Rock gardens are easier, braking traction is improved, and my bike is still very flickable. As for the height difference/geometry change, just slide your forks up 5mm and tweak from there.

Just threw on a brand new GT 216 fatty with a well worn enduromousse that’s been in use for a year and a half. After the first ride I’ll say that traction in the greasy dirt and slippery roots has been amazing! I’ve definitely got a “chubby” for this set up! (That means thumbs up right?) 😏

I noticed your recent videos are in a lot more extreme terrain than before and all on the two stroke bike. I also noticed your riding abilities have greatly increased from a year ago. Other than Graham's hard enduro racing and training videos, your videos are the only training/fun riding videos I watch. Keep up the great videos.

I have the Shinko mx216 90/100. A little hard for cold winter days (3-10 Celcius) but amazing for everything else. It really does help in the large loose rocks. 80/100 = 80mm wide and 100% of width in height 90/90 = 90mm wide and 90% of width in height 90/100 = 90mm wide and 100% of width in height Rear tires work the same for sizing. First number is width and the second number is percentage of width in height/thickness.

Nice analysis of an interesting and fairly important topic. After riding fatties for a year, I have found that I much prefer a chubby. Faster steering, no change in ride height, and similar traction and comfort. Also, MUCH better in west coast ruts. I haven't yet tried an 80. it's funny, however, how you say you can't much tell the difference in brands and then - both here and in other vids - strongly endorse Goldentyre (GT). Jus' keepin' it real.

@thesnake1317 4 года назад
I've always ran the 80/100-21 because it really does track better. Not the best for Hard enduro but you'll notice a difference if you're riding fast in single track compared to the 90/90-21. I find the 90/90-21 likes to walk a bit more (or climb out of ruts) but I know I/anyone can compensate for that with a slight change in technique.

I ride the fat tire here in the AZ desert. It gives more cushion on the sharp edge ricks and stays on top of sand well. My go to is the shinko 216. 90/100/21🇺🇲

The 80/100 seems to work best here in the deep Florida sand. The 90/90 has a heavier steering feel and doesn't seem to help any in deep sand. The wider front tire also rubs the fork boots on conventional fork models like a kdx 200( preferred weapon). Best choice here is the Michelin starcross 5 soft. The starcross 5 sand 80/100 works well in sand only but is twitchy on roots and palmettos( Florida native plant from hell).

Being the indecisive person that I am, the tyre choice is made by whatever is already on the bike when I buy it. When time to replace tyres, same again. If the bike shop is out of that tyre, decision then made by the ship. Hope I'm not the only one 🤔

Good stuff, makes sense. Being short I will give the 90:90 a go. Please do a similar exercise on rear tyre size. Currently running 140:80 in the back and it is taller than my previous tyre.
@rztrzt
@rztrzt 4 года назад
Well 80% of 140 would make it taller than 80% of 120.
@xt225
@xt225 4 года назад
@@rztrzt actually it was 120:90, but I get your drift and will go back to that and 90:90 if Michelin Enduro mediums do them.
@rztrzt
@rztrzt 4 года назад
@@xt225 There's about a 4mm difference between 140/80 & 120/90 which I doubt anybody is going to notice with tyre compression. If you're on the short side my first recommendation would be to shave the seat foam. Messing with the suspension would be the last and most expensive option. Starting of with a known lower bike would be ideal. Happy trails!

@shinyribs2178

Shinko made the fatty for Goldentyre originally, which is why they were identical in every way. Only difference being markings and GT gouging us 2x the price for literally the same tire. GT then started having their tires made in China, and that is when they went to the harder compound. If you want the original gummy fatty, Shinko still makes it. If you need a stiff tire and hard compound, Chinese GT is that tire. I still don't see me buying a Chinese GT anytime soon. GT was overcharging when selling us rebranded Shinko tires, and now they've moved to even cheaper production in China. Meh.

I'd have to agree with you about the fatty, especially about ruts. The tyre doesn't want to stay in them. For me the positives outweigh the negatives. I haven't watched your vids in a while and noticed the visual quality increase. What camera are you using now?

Love the fatty most of the time , but definitely will catch you out in the ruts and will wear you out if on a relatively short loop that gets deeply rutted from other racers/ riders. It can also push quite badly on top of muddy ground instead of biting in.

Hey Barry! I installed the fatty tire on my Beta 300RR and am curious if you slid the forks tubes up in the triple camps to compensate for the larger diameter. 10 mm should be enough to get the bike geometry back to where it should be. My excessive muscular density tends to make the back end squat a bit more anyway so I didn't want to make it worse by having a taller front tire. Thanks!

I used to run a GT fatty on my x trainer. I found the front would wash out too easily and I suspect it was because of the extra diameter of the tread pattern. it would tend to sit on top of the mud rather than cut through it.

I weighed the fatty one time and it's like 3-4lbs heavier than your average tire. Thing's massive. All a trade off, I suppose. I run a fatty and biggest mousse until it shrinks to chubby size, then switch the dead fatty to a 90 and re-lube. Ride until the mousse and 90 die at the same time, then I repeat the process. I roll a fat chubby.
