I used the stringjoy calculator to keep all my guitars no matter what tuning or scale length to have tension between 13 to 17 lbs per string. All my guitars feel pretty close to the same as the others. At least when it comes to bends. Thanks string joy

I don't know if there's something wrong with me but I use 60-12 for Drop C & B :D I used to have 56-10 with Bb and E But you're right, Dunlop above all

Love Stringjoy! Ever since I had wrist surgery I’ve gone full slinky string mode. Stringjoy’s calculator helped me change my string preferences with custom gauges 10-50 for Drop C/ D standard 10-50+70 for drop F# on my 7 9-58 for a 7 in Drop A 9-44 for standard E and drop D

Also Ray ever want to feel like you are playing an entirely different instrument try 8-38 I think it is, the lightest ones I could find. Even in E standard they were so “slinky” and required a very light touch but I ended up tuning UP to like an E# standard and it was cool but so weird. Mix it with some chimey single coils and it’s an entirety different experience

They make .007's you know (Billy Gibbons of ZZ top swears by them(no-one ever called his tone thin), I tried em once, I currently play .009's because they seem to work best on my favorite guitar, but I prefer heavy strings (was up in the .012 range but my guitars absolutely hated them, I just liked them, i had been playing ALOT of 12-string then and had striong fingers). The instrument truly does pick the right gauge if you know what to look for. (intonation range, your preferred genre and tuning and the individual guitar all make a huge difference)

I always like slightly tighter strings, and I notice baritones want a bit bigger rather than "getting away with less", because the increased length means increased flex.

Thick string bro here. Before I started electric guitar, I played viola (string tension is super high on bowed string instruments), so I have a tactile aversion to slinkiness. I tend to go very heavy on the nickel-coated strings and medium on the bare strings.

Nowadays the biggest challenge is preferences when it comes to guitar because there is just TOO many options. There is just an infinite amount of variables that can change your tone. Maybe back in the day people appreciated rock music more because it was about the guitar skill when it came to playing instead of tone, and I feel like many people (including myself) get too attached to their tone instead of their ability. Thanks for the video!

This all makes a lot of sense after watching you play for a while now. I play like a gorilla so the heavy bois are for me.

This was my issue with the BB600, it came with 13s ..went down to 11s and it was still not feeling good... put 9s on it and it's AMAAAZING

I use 10-52 on my Gibson scale for E standard, drop D & Eb standard. Then usually 11-56 or something (sometimes 12-62) for lower tunings like Drop B & A#/A

I totally agree with your approach! Lighter gauge strings also sound clearer, and to me as a djent guitar player it's super important

I’ve been 11-50 on Gibson scale and 11-48 on fender for a while. Just feels right for E standard, Drop D, and D standard. I like 13-60 for my Drop C#, C# Standard, and Drop C

I obviously love the gibson scale, I just feel as though the fender scale allows me to get away with a tad bit lighter of a gauge. Anywho, you've got some massive strings! I'm envious haha

@@xanderraymondcharles dude you should be. One of us has been noodling in their bedroom for 20 years on heavy strings and one of us has a great channel, is a professional musician, EMG Artist, Balaguer artist, StringJoy artist, respected by some of the most respected people in the industry from Jim Root to Fluff to Rob Chapman to Ola. Yeah I’d be envious of my subpar playing on thick strings too, lol.

This is so true. I once tried 10-52 in E on my Floyd Rose guitar since that's what I would usually use on my Strat. It felt too tight, and I could barely bend at all. Eventually, I switched to 9-46 in Eb, and this feels amazing. Can even drop it to D standard without any issues at all. Just goes to show that sometimes different guitars require different string gauges, and it's a good thing to experiment.

I recently did the same thing! I bought a new guitar and I loved it when I first played it but I decided to change the strings to what I was using, and it just felt off. I went back to using the standard 10-42, and actually started playing in Drop C# rather then Drop B and I love it now! I honestly can’t see myself going back. Now all my guitars are in Drop C# and if I want to play in Drop B again I just use my pitch shifter on my whammy pedal. Funny how for many years I was figuring out how to go heavier, and heavier but in reality all I needed to do was go back up.

For E Standard/Drop D, Eb Standard/ Drop Db, and D Standard/ Drop C I use 11-48 power slinky 11-54 Beefy Slinkys for C# standard/Drop B. 12-62 Mammoth for C standard/ Drop Bb and B standard/ Drop A. 11-58 7 String power slinky.

I'm one of those mindless chug players who loves heavier gauges, but I might try this if I ever decide to make myself a decent lead player

I can't stress enough how much of a regret I didn't try .8's sooner. I've been playing like 25 years and I was at a plateau for a whiiiiile like several years. I have made a shit ton of progress lately that I've been chasing for years by 3 things: changing to passive pickups, louder amp, and .8's on my guitar. I play a Les Paul Modern now, but for 99% I played Music Man, ESP and Ibanez. Seriously even with heavier stuff I think the .8's sound way more metal. Like I put an EQ pedal in somewhere. I have never sounded so close to ... And justice tones.

I find the light gauge when dropped so hard. For some reason when I started really getting into guitar 18 years ago I used skinny top, heavy bottom 10-52 in standard tuning. So in something like Drop C or Drop C# I want to be around 11-58. I got my first 7 string about 6 months ago at the 26.5" scale length and do use lighter strings because I feel like the natural extra inch makes it a lot better for my wants with tension. I'm thinking about selling the non-sentimental 6 strings to do a few semi-customs in the 26.5 as a 6 string for my standard tuning needs.

I’ve always preferred 10-52 for drop C#, D standard or drop C. On 24.75 or 25.5. Now I have a 26.5 Ibanez rgd axion label. Since prefer 10-52. Got 11-54 in drop B on my schecter Damien 6. But I recently just tuned it down to A#. Thinking about maybe going to 11-56 in A# in the future

I stick to both 9-42 and 10-50/52 gauge strings, depending upon the guitar.

Really nice video! I really like the G and B strings responsiveness that 10-46 gives me even on lower tunings, but I miss some extra tension on the E, A, D strings would I somehow loose this responsiveness if I replace to 10-52 ?

I’ve been struggling to find some decent light-ish strings for my gretsch baritone - for drop E I’ve been stuck using a bass VI set which is a 24-84 set but theyre WAY too tight. I feel like I’ve run out of options 😂 HELP ME

I put strings on my baritone from a set meant for 8-string guitars and tuned the guitar in F standard. It works well, and it is not far from your drop E tuning.

I love the Ernie ball burly slinky’s, And if I go to drop c, then I take a 0.54 for the lowest string and that’s it :D
