I have a beautiful yarn that I love, but it is not the recommended yarn for my socks: can one use any kind of yarn to. make socks or do we have to use the recommended yarn? is the a book or video that addresses this on how?
My suggestion would be to work on the needle size you think you want. A size 1 for instance. Cast on the size you want to make, 64 stitches for instance, and knit 2-4 inches. This will give you a perfect idea of how your sock will work up and then you can see if you like the fabric and if the sock is measuring the gauge in the pattern. You could knit a flat gauge swatch but I think the method described above will give you a truer idea of how the final sock will work.
If you have time, I could really use some feedback. I've knit a few pairs of socks, and I haven't found any of them to be nice and comfy. They LOOK pretty, but they are scratchy and not squishy, and pretty tight not elastic. What do I do differently? For reference, I'm using size 1 needles (40" magic loop) and while I tend to have loose tension, I try to be tighter with socks because I heard that was important to make them sturdy so they don't wear out. As for yarn, I've used Patons Kroy, Lion Brand sock-ease, and premier yarns serenity sock. The pair I'm currently knitting is patrons kroy fx and they feel so scratchy and stiff in my hands. Can this be fixed with washing? Or is this all my fault for being cheap with my yarn purchases?
