Today I attempt to teach you how to chop a sample that is LONGER than the 12 second limit in the drum sampler on the Teenage Engineering OP-1 synthesizer workstation! This is my first tutorial so please let me know if it helped! At the end I mess around with my sample as well. I sampled Oath to Order from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.

Great tip! also, had no idea about two of those shortcuts you mentioned, increasing the sample volume or changing the tape mode resolution. that one in particular is super helpful! also, I liked the beat you ended up making, even if it was just a tutorial!

Had my op1 for many years and always love finding new tips. Still much to master with it. I knew about this though you have a teensy bit diff approach & explain very well. . Wish there were better tuts like this 6years ago! Subscribed… :) even stuff I know I like seeing reviewed again. There's other tricks I use that are related to this, with using time stretching and expanding to help extend the time you have for recording… like lowering tape speed to record longer than 6 mins! Also I may be won't but I think if you wanna alter the volume of all the samples on the keys at once you can raise the lowest key then copy it and paste it from the keyboard and it'll make the change across the board. Was stoked when I found that tip. So many possibilities and capabilities in this thing… I know a lot but it's taken so long and I've still so long to go. There was srsly no manual when this came out nor many resources to learn, at all! Looks like you're newish relatively here, at least to me, and it's also cool to find a fresh teacher/creator who's currently active & providing info in real time who seems like they remember how tricky this stuff can be to fully grasp. I like that you showed about sampling with a line in and wo, and then about tempo/beat synching after. And showed the cutting and lifting and re-placing of the wave in tape track.. I mention all this cause even though these are things I know/can do already, took a long ass time to know about and get proficient these fundamentals. ..giving you this feedback as encouragement cause there's so many op1 vids now but so many are still too slow or fast or much or little & can cause confusion and frustration. I now know enough to know there's a lot left to learn BUT think I'm finally skilled enough to get into bits I don't fully understand well enough to really be maximizing my music making the way I want to be &'know I can with this outstanding machine. It's hard to ask questions when you don't know what you don't know, you know? Maybe you'll be the one to finally lead me to the AHAs of ooohhh now I get it moments I'm wanting for so long now. … I've some things I wanna know if are possible and can't find any mention of but seem like they must be … will write on a new line… thanks for reading all this. Hopefully my long winded words are not too annoying and make sense and are even useful. :)

Thank you mate really useful video and super clear. I’m sitting on the fence and getting splinters on whether or not to jump in... lots of user reporting Qc issues it seems following the hardware 2.0. A video on the internal revisions and changes would be WORTH ITS WEIGHT IN GOLD! Not many people seem to have details past a new screen..? Thanks again mate it’s dangerous to go alone out here!!!!
@gregonater
@gregonater 3 года назад
djmonkfish I think all gens have had certain common issues. The annoying thing seems to be that it’s always difficult to get parts. I don’t have any experience with other gen op-1s than what I have (I suppose 2.0?) so I don’t know if I would be a useful resource for that as I would just be guessing from other forum posts etc. If I were you, I would try to buy a used unit in good shape or buy straight from TE if you want one! It does suck that you have to worry about reliability and quality though and TE really does tend to disappoint me in a lot of ways. Anyway, good luck!

Great vid.. Little trick if you lift the samplee and put it down using the arrows, it normalizes the volume, across all of the keys.

Ok this is awesome! Quick question. When recording a sample directly into the tape, is there any limitation to that? For instance, if I wanted to sample the same zelda song you did but wanted to keep it the way it is and just add background drums to it, could I do that instead of slicing the sample up to add it to separate keys? That way the sample just lives on the tape as a separate track?
@gregonater
@gregonater 3 года назад
I don't know how I missed this comment! Sorry, i'm sure you've figured it out by now. You could sample anything you want to the tape and it can live there as a backing track for whatever you want to do on the other tape track! You would want to match the OP-1's tempo to the tempo of your sample, record it in and then try to have it loop smoothly. It might take some experimenting to get the temp correct so it will loop correctly as the OP-1 can't time stretch audio to tape markers, but it can definitely be done with some patience!

Good tutorial man. Didn't know you could change resolution on the tape with shift+stop. And the resampling technique is something I have to try out. But why do you use a noise gate on your audio? I think it's better to just have natural speaking, instead of just cutting off sound momentarily. That's just my opinion tho. Also really cool that you sampled Majoras Mask music! Such a great game.

Can you control the master eq while resampling? I'm trying to pan a hihat every 2 beat right and left... haven't figured it out yet. Thanks for the trick though.
@gregonater
@gregonater 3 года назад
Since the tape tracks are mono, I think the only way to do this would be to sample to two separate tape tracks and pan one hard left and hard right and chop it up from there. Master EQ should be applied when resampling though I believe if I'm understanding correctly.

If you mean shift then stop to cut the tape up more, you may have to update the firmware on your OP-1. I believe this feature was added in version #235.

It truly is bad in some ways, and it's expensive, and TE is pretentious and annoys me as a company...but I still find the OP-1 special and I won't ever sell it. My advice if you are debating purchasing one is to buy a used one in good shape so you can sell it if you decide it's not for you!
