I just found an old fountain pen, replaced the ink cartridge but it doesn't write so it probably needs to be clean. I didn't know to do it, as I never used one, and your video it's so useful. Thank you Teoh 😊
Great instruction! You can buy a drain screen to go over your drain when you clean your pens to be sure you don't lose it. Dollar General and grocery stores have them for just a few dollars.
Thanks for the video, good tip on Rotring cleaning fluid. I've never had clogging issues but it should come in handy for a more thorough cleaning. Could you compare Kiwa-Guro to Platinum Carbon? I know you've done reviews of both, but is there any significant reason for picking one over the other? Thanks!
Teoh Yi Chie Some of my Sailor Jentle inks have a strong chemical smell as well, to the point I have to fill up my pens by an open window. I'll go for Platinum then, thank you.
Excellent video.... I had to ask. I have started using the Platinum Carbon black ink recently after watching your videos. Is water enough to wash it out of my twsbi eco/safari/metropolitan?
Is it possible to get the smell of kiwa guro out of a pen? The cap of my sailor pro gear and section still smell, and I only had it inked 6 days. It writes fine inking it with another ink, but even soaking it in an amonia solution and airing it out did not get rid of kiwa guro's smell.
Can you send me the name of the ink cleaning solution you recommend. I could not read it on your video. I have a technical pen and I have not been able to clean it with any solution thus far.
Thank you for this useful video. Would it be OK to use isopropyl alcohol after it to dry it and remove possible impurities from the water? My water is hard, meaning it has a lot of minerals in it. I'd probably be better off using distilled water for a final rinse. Do you agree?
hi Teoh! I wonder how long was the longest your pigment-based fountain pen ink gets left in the pen? I was thinking of probably leaving Platinum Brun Sepia(waterproof as well) in a pen(possibly a preppy) for probably 4+ months; it will likely horribly clogged yet I hope to still be able to clean it somehow, as I have ultrasonic cleaner, but I've never seen anyone/article experienced about pigmented inks left for too long and their cleaning experience, if it's even possible
@@teohyc obviously not intently leaving it inked for so long, more to unexpected negligence that happens from time to time, or just couldn't draw as much as expected, or maybe just new user's concern, as pigmented ink gets so much of bad rep like it will permanently ruin the feed
If flushing the pen with water does not work effectively, buy a bottle of fountain pen cleaning liquid, then submerge necessary pen parts in the liquid overnight, and the ink will wash off easily the next day.
@Teoh Yi Chie Great video. May I ask after washing the pen, does it have to be 100% dry before refilling it with ink? Will a few drops water in the cartridge make the carbon ink go bad? Also How would you clean a Fountain Pen that has a Sac/Bladder? Same Approach? Thank you so much. :)
I don't think a few drops of water will make the ink go bad, but it might dilute the ink to make it lighter. For fountain pens with sac/bladder, you can probably use the same method, although I have not personally tried that myself.
It is better to put the pen with a sac in the sun (direct or indirect) for a little while to ensure all water is evaporated and that the pen and its parts are completely dry before putting Humpty-Dumpty back together again and inking the instrument. Otherwise, remember: corrosion.
Platinum Preppy and Jinhao x450, their respective cartridges appear to have water soluble ink. Can I clean them out with water then use rubbing alcohol to displace the water so the pen dries more quickly?
+Perktube1 Not sure why you want to use Rubbing alcohol. You can just leave the pen in the sunlight to dry for a day. I usually put the pen stuck to Blu tac on my hot monitor. Dries the pen very fast.
uhmm..i got my new fountain pen today, since im a newbie i tried to use an ink for a marker...and i used an alcohol to clean it... so im asking if it's still ok?? can it still work??
Marker ink is suppose to dry very quickly. It's not going to work with fountain pens because it will dry almost instantly on the nib. You should use fountain pen inks. If you mean cleaning the pen, you can use this Rotring liquid to clean it too.
+Soumyajit Sarkar Just put it under running water for a short while. It should clean most of the ink out. Then you can use a piece of tissue, twist it and clean out the rest.
Dismantle all the parts, run them through water. Then flush water through the grip section using the ink convertor. If it still clogs, use the Rotring cleaning liquid.
