With your setup you can also backwash with the filter open and stir the sand while the water spills out and keep stirring till the water runs clear. Just have to watch for water on your electricals. Then close the filter again. Similar to what you did but gets much more muck out of the filter
yes but after many months the debris clumps into sections and the filtration is reduced. If you open yours you may see that even when you do backwash, you will have debris collected in some parts that become clumped together reducing the filters efficiency.
thanks i must actually change the title. To clean the sand scrape your hand round the sides and then remove the silt. Then give the sand a thorough mix with your hand. It will be fine for a few more months. The sand tends to clump together.
Open top up and pour in a mixture of white vinegar/baking soda combo in and let sit over night then just spray water inside until all nasty stuff stops coming out the top. It's all you need to do once a year.
