How I cleaned my old nexx helmet when the rubber top had gone bad and sticky Nail Polish Remover: amzn.to/3kjmHwM Mother's Back-to-Black: amzn.to/33A1jg6 My killer Kawasaki shirt: amzn.to/3mfZfSK
Just had the same problem with a ski helmet with a matte rubber finish that had been in storage for a few years. I soaked a cloth with Windex, and the sticky film wiped right off with a little elbow grease.
Isn't it sort of expected that acetone might remove some paint? Wouldn't high strength rubbing alcohol be a better choice for things you don't want to accidentally strip the paint off of?
Believe it or not I got it from Amazon and it is surprisingly good Genuine Kawasaki part. I'll put the link in the description for you. Glad to hear your rubber was saved.
Found two of my old KBC green off road helmets in a storage bin. Both had this coating on it. I was able to put my palm on each one and pick them up. So sticky. Anyway, used lacquer thinner, rubbing alcohol, goo be gone, wd-40, carb cleaner, etc. without much luck. Better, but still sticky. I will try the acetone next. Anyone out there try something else that worked?
If you like the results you’re getting then I wouldn’t change it. Car paints vary widely by car. My NSX would get pin stripes just driving around. A course towel would absolutely destroy it. My truck however won’t scratch even with a regular towel. So whatever works ...
