How to clean an old rusty fuel tank cheap by using Electrolysis! No Acids!

I needed to clean out this rusty fuel tank from my Kawasaki 3 wheeler project but I didn’t want to use any type of acid that may damage the already weakened and thin metal. I found this great write up on Indestructibles and thought I would give it a try. After cleaning out the old fuel, and rinsing the tank out to get the loose rust and junk out I started this lengthy process.
The write up I followed suggested using 1 tablespoon of the Washing Soda per 1 gallon of water. My tablespoons were quite heaped so that is why I figure 1-2 tablespoons. I dumped those in a gallon of water, mixed it thoroughly, and filled tank.
For the electrode/ anode, I used a piece of 1/4” round bar steel that I bought from Home Depot. You can really use any iron/steel you have for this as long as it fits in your tank and doesn't touch the sides. Also make sure you DO NOT use stainless steel, when used it will produce hazardous waste since the stainless steel has chromium in it and when used in this process it creates poisonous chromates in your electrolyte solution, which can cause skin irritations, and makes it illegal to dump down the drain.
Once your tank is full and the electrode/ anode is set in your tank and not touching anything but the liquid, its time to hook up the charger. The positive end will be on the electrode and the negative somewhere on the tank to make a good ground. I ran mine for about 10-12 hours on the 10 amp/12volt setting. I cleaned my electrode periodically and I also swapped out the electrolyte solution every 12 hours replacing the solution 4 times total during this process. With each fluid change, the tank seemed to get cleaner each time. If you have the time, this is a great process to remove rust out of your tank and it was quite safe, no harsh chemical or acids to worry about!

Remember to Vent the hydrogen that’s produced during the process.

I didn't have much for fumes coming off but I was also in a big open garage so that probably helped but I do agree thank you Mike!

Yes, the tank needs to be vented to let the gas escape. Didn't appear to be vented.

I really enjoyed your video. Very informative and very well explained. It's given me the confidence to go ahead and try it out myself on a rusty fuel tank that is part of a renovation project I'm undertaking

Awesome! Thank you so much! This is the reason why I started doing videos like these, to hopefully explain what I do well enough to help and encourage others.

Great job. That's the kind of result (minus the pinhole, which isn't your fault) we're all looking for. You just added one Canuck to your sub list. :)

thanks for the video, I have a 96 blade and stupidly I haven't been able to ride it for 6 years due to health but never gave it a thought of emptying out the old fuel, i have decided to sell it and opened up the cap and nearly cried , I've watched that many videos and I've tried vinegar and paraffin with a bunch of nuts and was going to try strapping it in side my cement mixer in many duvets and leave it whirling around for a few hours, but then i came across a few guys doing electrolysis and thought that might be it but I'm in England and what you over in the USA call soda (no the drink) is different to us and the thing that worries me is could this method do damage to the exterior paint because the bike is in mint condition paint wise and mechanically and fully original with 10k on clock it was my pried and joy.

Thanks for watching Ricardo, that is terrible news about your tank, when i opened this one up I was afraid all was lost, especially when i found holes in it. I was a little apprehensive about doing this to my tank as well with its original paint and decals from 85 but this process didn't harm any of the outside. You may not be able to get the exact brand that I purchased out here but if you can search online or otherwise for 100% Sodium Carbonate you should be good to go. I just went to the Arm&Hammer website and found the ingredients of their Super Washing Soda and the only ingredient in it was Sodium Carbonate. Good luck, if you have any questions please let me know!

Is your circuit rod stainless? Actually oxalic acid, contained in many radiator cleaners, does not go after anything but the rust. Use ONLY in steel tanks. Also, DO NOT USE GASOLINE in the tank while shaking it up with nuts, bolts or gravel fill to remove the loose rust. A spark could be generated. Also realize that the electrolysis process generated potentially explosive hydrogen gas, so cut the charger you are using for power BEFORE you disconnect the clamps from the tank and electrode.

Thank you Bruce, I appreciate the tips. No the rod was not stainless, I know i read that using stainless would create toxic fumes so I used a rolled steel rod from the home store. I did clean out with gas but I also rinsed many times before putting flame to it.

Thanks for posting. Thought i used electrolysis in the past, i completely forgot about this when i need it now for cleaning my car petrol tank. I was thinking of acid but then came across your video. But how did you clean the varnish when petrol is left for a long time in these tanks?
@HighPriority

This one had a lot of rusty fuel in it so I dumped out what I could then just took it outside and ran the garden hose in it and flushed it for a good bit. In another video I soldered up a hole in this tank and for that I blew a bunch of compressed air through the clean tank before I started to make sure nothing would ignite and get out of hand.

@@HighPriority do u need to put rust sealer after the job is done or rustproof paint for gas tanks or its fine to clean it with alcohol and w40 after that let me know thank u
@HighPriority
@HighPriority Год назад
@@myhoyoki you can get a coating to seal the inside of the tank but I read that it’s not necessary so I didn’t do it. I sprayed with some lubricant and then just try to keep the tank full but that can be difficult if your consistently using the machine. Keeping it full when it’s not being used or stored I think would be fine but you can cost them with a kit.

Did you leave the fuel tap in ?

I removed the fuel pet cock because it is aluminum and from what I read, electrolysis doesn’t go well will aluminum. I had some universal gasket material and cut a piece of wood to block it off.
