As someone watching this to learn how to power wash for the first time, I'm actually really appreciative that you left in the part where you were careless with the pressure/direction. I hear lots of people *mention* the start/stop lines, going against the wood grain, etc. but to actually see it gives me a great impression of what to avoid. Thanks so much for keeping the footage!

Nice job, I just finished my deck, it had been stain before about 12 years ago in bad shape, so I cleaned it with 30-seconds cleaner and pressured washed the dark spots let it dry for 1 week then hand brushed it with a paintbrush ( I see the sprayer would have been better), it took about 3 days to fully dry. The results are amazing looks like a new deck and I am in my late 60's and a woman!!!! I also cleaned the house with 30-second cleaner it had that green algae on it and the gutters, I have a pump sprayer and on full force sprayed the gutters with it and the house. By the time I got the hose to rinse it all off it was clean no brushing no scrubbing, unbelievable looks like a new house.

I just used 30 second cleaner on the sides of my house. I'm now painting my doors and trim, then I'm going to use the 30 second cleaner on my deck. After that I'm going to stain it.

I took a big surface sander to my deck (one on wheels you can use while standing behind. Can rent from Home Depot). This smooths the surface (no mor splinters), levels it a bit, and gets rid of the dirt you miss with the pressure washer. Works wonderfully

With stains, oils, and oil based paints wood that has been outside for more than a few months will just soak up the coating. Any wood you should wet slightly and then let dry to the touch before applying an oil based product. It opens up the pores of the wood and will allow deeper penetration and protection by the coating. You can also do a light sanding right after you wet the wood to take the raised grain down so that it won't be raised after you apply the coating.
@icedteamama176

How long to wait after a wash before re-stain with oil based semi transparent stains please?
@KnightsWithoutATable
@KnightsWithoutATable Месяц назад
@@icedteamama176 Until it feels dry to the touch. It varies by the wood, the humidity, and how much you wet it down. The wetting can also raise the grain up, so you might have to sand the surface down before moving on to the coating or staining.

I do not like to use power washer on deck, I find that what the power washer is doing in this case is actually peeling a layer of wood when wand is held this close to surface. Then when deck dries the wood is all frayed/ fuzzy and than needs to be sanded before one can apply a sealer or stain. I use a bucket of hot water with dawn dish soap and a brush, rinsing with garden hose as I go along. I even tried a old floor polisher to scrub deck with great cleaning results but it to frayed the pressure treated deck boards. So the brush on a long handle is what I found to work the best. And I do my deck at least every second year, scrub let dry a few days then apply Thompson wood sealer.

I have just spent the last 2 days power washing my deck. I have used cleaners before power washing and cleaners after. I have concluded that if your deck is as bad as his old section, that cleaners by themselves aren't strong enough to get 100% of the mold growth off. I tried lightly power washing an area, then using a cleaner, scrubbing the cleaner in with a heavy scrub brush. After the soaking period was done, I again power washed it. This method got 90% of the growth gone. I also heavily power washed it [how he used the 10-degree nozzle] and that got about 95% of the growth off. I could have even used a stronger pressure to eliminate more growth, but that would have sacrificed the wood surface. In my case, I found that that heavy power washing before using a cleaner, and again a normal power washing to remove the cleaner worked best. Around 99% of the growth was eliminated.

I work for Stanley Steemer. I spend a lot of time in the summers cleaning decks all over Michigan. If anyone ever needs a good even cleaning, definitely consider giving your local company a call and at least have them come look at it for free. Our process is fairly similar, but much quicker, and avoids all of the stop/start marks

Just my two cents back brush the stain if using a sprayer to work the stain into the wood. I use a deck brush on a pole and works the stain in real well and probably uses less stain. Then do a second coat before within the time frame of what it says on the can.

Not to be a hater, but in a year (or less) the finish will probably be peeling, flaking and coming off. With stain you have to back brush it into the wood after you spray it to get it into the wood grain, especially with water based products. Also, no matter what it says on the label, you need to apply at least 2 coats. Just a bit of advice for anyone thinking of doing the same thing.
@stlbowfishing1661

Todd Yoder two coats on a semi or solid color will cause peeling. Over apply one coat will also do the same thing. Agree with you on back brushing. Ok to apply with sprayer but needs to be pushed into wood

15 degree (yellow) or a "turbo nozzle" if included does a lot better job than the 40 degree (white) as the loss of psi is substantial. Glad to see you figured that out for yourself before you got too far. That deck came so clean, very nice.

I am using Thomson's Advanced Sealer, this is 3rd time I am using it but first time spraying it with sprayer instead of brush. I used my foam cannon to cover the deck in foam, used liquid soap, a d then powerwashed it, did that today, hope to paint tomorrow if dry. I noticed some of the stain from last application is holding strong in some spots so I didn't piwerwash to bare wood. Hope it will work well.

I've viewed numerous videos on deck staining and every one of them - except this one- states that for the best outcome you should stain each board end to end as to not get overlap marks and for the best outcome to not stain in direct sunlight as the stain will dry before being fully absorbed into the wood. It'll be interesting to see how that affects the durability over the next year or two. Didn't seem to initially know how to pressure wash the deck either!

The only benefit to using a sprayer to apply stain is that you'll be done quickly and that’s it. The sprayed on stain doesn’t penetrate wood properly the way a stain brush does. Besides looking like crap sprayed on stain will also be flaking off in large chunks by your next season. But man it sure sprays on fast!

Helpful video! How’s the stain holding up after 5 years please? You did one coat? We have a 9 yr old deck that gets a ton of afternoon sun…wondering if should re-stain (oil) or go with solid. Thanks.

Wonder if you would have used less product with a brush n roll technique compared to spraying? Just curious as a business standpoint.
