What is an oil bath filter? Well it's a unique system that perculates dirty air with oil and runs it back into engine. Basically many diesels were using these before air filters. It's actually a great system but very dirty. Here is what I know and how to clean them out.

Quick note, since it's a common misconception about these cleaners - the air does not percolate, or bubble through the oil. If it does the oil level is too high. The actual mechanism of how the dirt is removed from the air is simply the change in direction of the air - the air moves down, then around a bend and up, dirt being heavier than air continues downward and hits the oil where it is trapped. The wire mesh gets the lighter, finer particles.

@@petescarport Should note, on some oil bath filters there is a high mark above the fill line, sometimes labelled "service". This is because as the oil traps debris, the oil level rises (as the bottom of the oil trap fills with dirt) when the oil goes above the high mark it can start to bubble which will start to choke the engine.

Hey Pete, I've really enjoyed this series on the 67 Mercedes (and I'll continue to watch other cars) but are there any updates on this car -- or have I just missed what happened? I keep looking for an older car project -- I do have a 03 BMW Z4 convertible that I drive all summer -- it usually provides some winter projects for me to fix getting it ready for next summer. Thanks for the videos!!
