How to Clean inside Fisher & Paykel Smart Drive washing machine

If you are noticing greasy marks on your washing after a cycle the inside of your washing machine may need cleaning. Here is how to take the bowl out of your Fisher and Paykel Top Loader washing machine and clean it.
Once you have it clear, doing the occasional hot wash and putting through a cleaner powder from the supermarket every now and then will stop the soap scum from building up again.

Thanks for the great video Dan. Our machine was filthy in places you couldn't see and every now and then would dump gunk all over our washing. With the aid of your easy to follow instructions we gave it a good clean today and are confident of having plenty of mess-free washing ahead.

What was wrong with it? No rinse and spin? I'm curreñtly having that issue. Idk if just cleaning it will solve the problem. What was the problem with that washing machine u fixed?
@stevenbissett
@stevenbissett 5 месяцев назад
@SuperLuckao I replaced the water drain pump with a new one as the drum wasn't fully emptying all the water before the spin cycle and therefore would not spin. That solved the problem initially but then reocuured. Rather than spending more money on replacing the next most likely cause (the control panel) we decided it was cheaper just to buy a second hand washing machine that worked.

@@motrepairs I pulled the drum out and cleaned it ,it had 15 years of soap scum but after 2 test washes machine comes with fault code 49 and apparently I need new module . Did I do something wrong ? Also it had about 5 mm of soap scum and all the holes were blocked on drum , did that cause Machine to jump and shake when spin dry started or I need new shockers ?
@motrepairs
@motrepairs Год назад
@@ja-kl8rg 49 is an inlet valve fault, while it can be caused by a faulty controller that is not very likely. Does the code come up as soon as you power it on or part way through the cycle? If you use a multimeter to check the inlet vales one is probably open circuit. Usually nothing you do with cleaning the inner bowl will affect the inlet valves.

Hi Dan, Brilliant video. My washing machine was taking simply ages (20 minutes or so) to empty and the spin cycle wasn't working properly as water couldn't get away fast enough. I followed the video exactly, except once I had cleared the tissue paper and other bits out of the pump I poured more water in and blew back down the drain hose. very helpful. Did this yesterday on my F&P Aquasmart washer. I had no idea how absolutely filthy the outer part of the "inner stainless steel tub" would be after 15 years of use. It looked rusted but it wasn't rust it was brown crud that had accumulated over the years of washing our cloths, towels, etc. for just 2 people. We don't have pets, we don't work on a farm (sometimes wish we did!).... Anyway my point is it's just me and the wife and we both do the relatively clean work of a salesman and a school teacher with no pets in the house and I was blown away at just how filthy and nasty the outside of the inner tub was. I took it outside to our lower deck and hosed it off but some of it had to be scrubbed off. I was so thankful that it wasn't rust as it did look like rust but - no it all came off after a good bit of scrubbing. If I had known I would have been doing this every couple of years. And thankfully you can do this if you own a Fisher & Paykel washing machine.

Its very similar, just a slight change to the way the lid/top deck come off. You shouldn't have to be taking it apart that often, just a hot wash every few months is generally enough to slow down gunk buildup. If its getting bad that quickly do you use any fabric softeners, wool or nappy wash detergents?

They are a sealed unit, if they are dripping from getting grit in them you will need to replace the valve assy. Some people take the filters out because they get sick of cleaning them, but its not worth it to have to replace the valve instead, so make sure to keep them in.

Could I feasibly replace the main seal with this level of disassembly? My machine just started leaking water a few loads ago. Bearings sound fine. No rusty muck has been slung off underneath yet. Just leaking during a wash. I’d like to replace the seal by pulling it out from around the shaft with a few screws screwed into it to pull it out with pliers from the top then press a new one in around the shaft with some pipe etc and petroleum jelly. Would like to avoid full disassembly to remove bearings and seal if not necessary. Great videos. I was going to dump my machine but seems like these older F&Ps still repairable if doing DIY without breaking the bank.
@motrepairs
@motrepairs 5 месяцев назад
Yes, but if the shaft is badly grooved it may not last long. Just make sure to put the screws into the the old seal only and don't damage the plastic of the outer drum. Pack the lips of the seal well with grease, (don't use petrolum jelly it can affect rubber) and a smear around the outside. We have a shield that sits over the shaft spline to protect the seal when sliding it on but you can do it without just slide the seal straight down. Steves Appliance Spares should have a seal only, or we could sell you one.
@FiShPiG6
@FiShPiG6 5 месяцев назад
@@motrepairsthanks for the reply and tips! I had already purchased the seal but was dreading the full disassembly that others were showing and thought maybe I should buy bearings too if going to that level but seeing this it’s much simpler if I can actually manage to extract the old seal straight from the top. Is there a way to avoid snapping the out of balance switch when I flip the top up? Much simpler than removing control board and wiring to remove top entirely. I can probably live without it if not because I can hear when it’s out of balance instantly in my unit before it triggers the switch anyway. Thanks again

It depends on what the rates are of the company you get really, if its just a clean then I would expect it to take about half an hour, plus the House Call fee to your area. Could be more if you have limescale rather then just soap scum, and if any parts are found to be wearing out.

What is your model number? Did you remember to plug to wires back in? (Silly question but I have to ask haha). If its done a warm or hot fill it wont do a full speed spin until after it has done a fill with cold, its to avoid programs with the hot plastic at high speeds. sometimes limescale or soap scum buildup can make it hard to remove. If you part fill the machine until water is just a few mm deep in the inner bowl it may loosen the scum on the shaft. You can also put one foot on the top of the shaft where the agitator was so you can have something to pull up against.

I went too far oops! I had the inside drum outside on a deck chair. Hadn't seen this one video of yours at that point. I was using garden hose with hot water from laundry tap & jet nozzle and a hearth brush, dipping it in a 2l icecream container that had about 50mls of dynamo liquid detergent (which I'd learnt was great for filth removal on quad bike a few years ago) BUT THE OOPS..... while i was cleaning underneath there was SO MUCH CRUD coming out the centre, underneath, yes, i didn't initially realise there was a NO GO AREA FOR WATER in the shaft hole (I assume) With what I quickly thought was grease, somewhere WATER SHOULD NOT GO! Is this correct? Will this be now an expensive repair for the guts of the base of the drum? Should i proceed with those screws inside the drum?

I’ve removed that clutch spline in the past, usually I have had success, but some times no, if you take yours off, when you do put it back on, don’t over tight the screws. I just use the water trick mainly, cold water or you can put boiling water down that part to break down limescale which will force that inner bowl out!

@motrepairs

The design of these smart drives is that the circulate water down the bottom, then up the sides and back through all the holes, and the way the holes are punched is meant to catch fluff, keeping it outside the inner bowl to be pumped out later. If you have cleaned all the holes as I show here and still getting fluff you can get a filter that sits down the inside of the agitator, you just need to clean it every wash. Part number 426451P

@@motrepairs Hello Dan it's me again lol. Will the lint filter prevent fluff from going out through the holes? I'm not sure I quite understood the directions of the water flow. I have cats---my diverter valve was clogged with cat fur. I'd like to minimize the amount of fur getting out of the little holes and going toward the pump in the future. Is the lint filter in the right order of things to help do this? Please let me know and thank you!!

@@patricias8779 yes the lint filter sits in the middle of the agitator and catches the lint before it circulates

Nice machine serial number dates manufactured in November 2002 so 10 years old when I was born imagine if it was November 14th 2002 it would be turning 10 at the same time I was born

How do you get your agitator off it’s stuck? Thanks

Is it the agitator or the agitator nut that is stuck? I've had a few nuts that are very hard to turn and sometimes have to make a tool by cutting a couple of slots in a piece of PVC pipe, but don't think I've ever had an agitator stuck on a Smart Drive. You could try partially filling the bowl with water, may help soften it and also will give you a bit more weight to pull against.

You do actually need to disconnect the bias spring before pulling the bowl up

If you want to, I usually just hang the neck ring over the outside of the machine with it still attached, maybe I'm just lazy lol.

Do you have any other tips for taking the drum out? I don’t think it’s ever been taken out so it’s quite hard and stuck.

It will be soap scum on the shaft, if you part fill it with water so the soap scum softens, and then also you have a bit of weight to lift against, then work it up and down.

FANTASTIC VIDEO, TO THE POINT! An other vid said he removed the 3 screws holding the drive hub at the bottom center of the inner drum. Like previous comment, the buildup on the driveshaft splines are causing the drum to fight removal. May need to use some type of calcium remover. Have patience so you don't cause damage!

After removing the 3 screws DON'T STRIP THE PHILIPS HEADS , the top of the smother shaft had a ring of rust that I used some fine sand paper to remove. Then the inner tub came out

I will probably be jumped on from a great height after saying this as it is probably repair men's heresy, but after struggling with the drum for at least half an hour, I resorted to bashing the spindle with a hammer........it worked. It felt wrong as I was doing it but as I say it worked

If your water is prone to limescale and its never been taken off it can get really stuck on sometimes.
