It would have been nice if he mentioned dirt and tiny hair particles thru the viewfinder that won't clean off no matter what. Now I know they're inside the pentaprism (Nikon D3300) as I can see them with a flashlight (torch). I believe I may have caused the situation myself by using compressed air can (tin) to blow out the interior of the camera. It looks like I'll have to send it to Nikon to get it disassembled and cleaned. Boo hoo.

Thanks Paul, I found that really helpful. You know when you realise you've been making some 'schoolboy errors' with regards to cleaning and storing your kit, a video like this can really be useful. For instance, I totally forgot that the lens hood can be screwed on the other way for easier storage! LOL

Nice to see you recommending the silica gel packs. I haven’t seen anyone else mention this technique. I bought a bag of 100 packs online a couple of years ago and I carry them along with zip-lock plastic bags big enough for camera body and lenses. One time I had a camera die on me after shooting an event in a downpour (fortunately it was a company camera!). The camera and lenses each went into separate bags with silica packs, and within a couple weeks the camera turned on like nothing had happened. (Just remember to take the battery and cards out and leave all the doors open!)

If in Australia SunSack CLI-MATE (reusable) sold by Bunnings is excellent. Has blue indicators that turn red when saturated with water. Regenerate in Microwave or Sun or central heater vents. I recovered a foggy EF-S 24mm f2.8 pancake lens that would not autofocus by storing in a container with CLI-MATE for 2 weeks.

1:20 Inside voice: _Nonononono_ 😁 *giggles* - Can't wait to see the rest of the video, but have to comment: I nearly always walk around with 3 lenses, and before changing (which I rarely do) I always have the cap in a convenient pocket and before changing I have my back-cover handy and have the camera pointed down (if able) - I make sure to swap quickly, and have everything handy *before* taking my lens off, which I'm sure you'll also recommend later 😉😄 E) The silica bucket is really nice! I'll have to get one of those too - And I store my gear the same way. Makes for a nice overview, I like looking at my gear too and well.. I don't have a dedicated camera bag yet 😄 I work in a supermarket, and often I find smaller bags with silica and I nearly always nick'em (We throw them out anyway) 😁 And good tip about filters. I have a set of step up/down rings and BOY can they be a pain to remove 😑

One of the most useful videos I've ever seen Paul, Thanks very much. The "marigolds" tip has just saved me from a stuck circular polariser filter ( as you'll know the front part is meant to rotate, so it was quite difficult to get a grip ... as it is in life more generally! )

1:35 You said here that dust is usually falling downwards due to gravity, but this is not true because of "Brownian Motion". Dust (and particles of smaller sizes) are very light weight and therefore these normally get tossed around due to air molecules hitting them, so I don't think keeping your camera facing up or down makes any difference (unless there are heavy particles in your environment which haven't already fallen (which I personally don't think would be the case)).

Thanks for sharing the cleaning tips. Have you ever used cans of compressed air for cleaning your camera gear? Dust Off is the brand that I have.
@DrTHC
@DrTHC 2 года назад
I would assume that he doesn't recommend it for a few reasons. First, shaking the can can expel the propellant into your camera or lens. Second, it is a repeat purchase, needlessly costing more money. And lastly, the force of the pressure might dislodge or damage the delicate inner workings of either camera or lens. IMHO, the compressed air is something best left to people who know how to use it safely. Of course, I'm a newbie to photography... But I've been a geek since childhood and handling compressed air is one of the first lessons newbies learn. It can screw up electronics very quickly when used incorrectly.

@photogenius

Hi Jeff. The problem I foresee here is that dust and debris my be forced into seals and areas of the camera that may make removal even harder. I would certainly NEVER try this will the internals of the camera as damage to the sensor is highly likely. Paul.

I have a Lumix G1 which has been in storage for some years. I recently pulled it out of its case to find tht the body of the camera is covered in a gluey substance which will come off it gently eased with a thumbnail nd is like little balls of glue or chewing gum in texture. I can't get it off completely and wonder if you can suggest how I can clean it. Rubbing alchohol? Don't want to cause further damage.🙄

When I switch from outside to inside my camera got a lot of condensation on the lenses and everywhere. Any tip on how to deal with that? Put your camera in a plastic bag before you come inside - any condensation will accumulate on the outside of the bag rather than the camera, after a few minutes the temps will equalise.
