in 8 hours two e coli bacteria can grow to 16 million....Donny's right to call attention to sanitation but not quite accurate-- if you have not removed soil and biofilms from your trays (via detergent)----and probably more importantly, wash your hands and wear single use gloves when harvesting---since a lot of customers are found via word of mouth a bad reputation via making your customers sick isn't worth it....after cleaning then a no rinse sanitizer is fine....air dry your trays

I've planning my growspace, and in my project there's a room just for cleaning trays. I cannot put in the air some particles of sanitizer, cause that particles certainly are going to get the plants, water or something else (I'm a former piercer lately, so I'm little obsessed with sanitation). With a closed room, put them for some minutes in a bath solution, then rinse it off with a pressure machine, and it's done. It's not the faster way to do it, but for me sounds the more secure way to do it, and show this care to my clients, they tend to trust even more on my product and work.

If it’s peroxide it’s not gonna hurt the plants many use peroxide vinegar mix to spray some seeds like sunflower to prevent mold. But I feel the cleaner the trays are the better even if they get a 3 step sanitation sink setup

Have you considered putting together a worm bin to recycle the growing medium? Worm castings could be a great addition to the medium, full of nutrient and health promoting humic acid (for both plants and humans). Or you could just sell the castings separately, or use them in your garden.

I remember from the days of sanitizing plastic baby containers/cups it was advised Not to scrub plastic with a brush or anything abrasive, as the scratches create even more places for bacteria etc. to attach and hide oo on your plastic. So I use a cloth or sponge on plastic. Nothing scratchy

Thank you as always for the great advice. We started our Microgreens business 7 months ago and we are up to about 40-50 trays a week now and honestly cleaning trays is one of the most time consuming things we do using the typical dump, rinse, soak in bleach water and then rinse again. I always felt this was over kill but we just followed how we were taught. Can’t wait to try this method thanks again

Hi Donny, since you asked about selling , the Philippine microgreens market is basically new. I was successful in growing microgreens outside in a shaded area. I havent tried selling, but i also dont know how. It seems i have to develop a market for it. I plan to sell it to people who are health conscious like people doing keto or to people that needed extra nutrition like people with cancer. How do i develop such a new market here ?
@robertguay3773

try chlorine dioxide instead of bleach you just put 1 tab into the sink and drop the trays in. you can drink the water with the chlorine dioxide in it with out any health problems and it kills more bacteria then bleach. it rinses easily and even if you watered the plants with that water it wouldn't hurt them.

Hi Donny, Right now I use a brush and water to clear off both sides of all trays, then I dip them in a bleach/water mix to sanitize, very boring and time consuming. I'm small scale, doing maybe 40 trays every other week in the winter months, 60 trays a week in prime time farmer's market months. Your method seems like a nice solution. Once a month I'll plan to scrub them down though. Thanks for the info. Stay healty.

I had been spraying my trays with water before sanitizing to remove all the soil and roots stuck on there after pulling off the spent matter. Since it is winter, I've been cleaning them indoors. At first I tried washing in the kitchen sink, which was super messy, and then I moved to using a pressure sprayer tank in the basement over a big wash tray I would then dump in my basement floor drain. I didn't know it was okay to leave some of the soil on there. Maybe I will try it this way.

I've been soaking them in bleach water in a storage bin for about 20 minutes then wipe them down and rinse them in hot water. It's quite time consuming, but that's the only way I've found to remove the root systems. Your comment about outdoor farming is correct for sure. However I fear that the more fragile crops like lettuce mix and brassicas are more susceptible to mold in my grow space, I just want to be sure to grow healthy products.
@DonnyGreens
@DonnyGreens 3 года назад
Definitely smart thinking! Thanks so much for your comment. This definitely sounds a bit time consuming, hopefully my tactics will help a bit, maybe you can incorporate a ix of the two methods? When i get roots sticking (sunflowers), I remove them simply by running my finger down the grooves with a paper towel when dumping initially. Hope this helps!

Whatever it is, how are you liking it and would you recomend this or a different route for someone starting out? Did you build this structure for your business, or was it pre-existing? Water spritzing, diluted hydrogen peroxide solution, but your main concern is having proper ventilation and circulation. Temperature is a big contributor. Air that isn’t constantly moving is going to give you mold every time.

I believe in thoroughly cleaning the trays. I make sure all soil, roots and debris are removed from trays. Trays are then washed, rinsed and sanitized in a three compartment stainless steel sink which was cleaned and sanitized. I wear gloves, bouffant cap, disposable paper suit, basically a clean room set-up. The trays dry on a clean and sanitized NSF rack like yours. Food safety is of the utmost importance. Every farmer should take a food safety course and familiarize themselves with GAP etc. It only takes one sick customer to ruin your business. I don't see it as a waste of time, people's health and possibly lives are on the line.

Empty spent trays, stack them all, get the ones you want to plant, spray the trays with the flat hose setting to get the large debris off them including roots, scrub with a brush and soap-water to get bacteria and spores off, spray with a backpack sprayer front and back with bleach (half a cup per gallon) for 5 mins.

A tray set you mean one with holes and one with none I’m assuming, so no sanitizer is going in between them? The way I see it I’ve been over killing it! 🤣

Yes, exactly!!! Haha are you spending too much time and effort getting yours clean?

You need proper rubber gloves for handling concentrated h2o2. Liquids easily permeate through those plastic gloves. Safety always.
@DonnyGreens
@DonnyGreens 3 года назад
Thanks! I've never had a problem thus far with these gloves but I haven't really spilled much of it either. I'd imagine the thin gloves work for tiny bits of it but yeah maybe the thicker gloves just incase a big spill happens. Thanks!

Seeing you have a triple sink, I'm not sure why you would not just wash, rinse and sanitize and let them drip dry... Just like a restaurant with food safety standards.

Becuase im not a restaurant, im a farm. I don't even fall under the same regulatory agency (dept of health vs dept of ag). This would be a lengthy process and much less efficient than the methods I show in my video

Yeah, I just bought my startup gear today. Trays were the most expensive.. about $80 for 15 of them. They do get cheaper with higher quantities. And if you use it enough times it pays for itself pretty quick.
