For people who have cooked in cast iron pans, they are not left with dry and barely dirty pan afterwards. What is left is a bunch of leftover grease, burnt food on the edges, and sticky burnt oil coating on the pan. I have tried salt scrub but it doesn't work well. I always end up washing the pan with soap and water and scrubbing it with steel wool. Then, I dry and reseason before leaving it on medium high stovetop for at least half an hour. It is not as easy as using a non-stick pan but the food cooked in it is worth the effort👍🏻👍🏻

There is nothing like cast iron. I haven't cooked with anything else in years. The only place I would add something is when your cast iron is extremely dirty, he showed cleaning a basically clean pan, stick it on a burner and get it screaming hot then pour hot water into the pan. Any food stuck on will pop right off then I rinse and scrub quickly with hot water, dry immediately, oil and place on warm burner, wipe again. It takes all of about 2 minutes. Once your pan is seasoned properly, you can wipe out almost anything that's not saucy and do exactly as he did here. Just my two cents being a cast iron addict

I have my mothers cast iron pans, They are probably well over 50 years old, She had them as far back as I can remember, and they still work great, and I do not use soap to clean them. Love them.

I love my cast iron pan despite the fact that they’re so heavy. I have bad wrists, so it can be a bit awkward, but worth it!

This isn't cleaning. Why folks are afraid of soap and water I'll never understood. Scrubbing with salt is _more_ likely to remove the seasoning than a sponge, and modern dish soap isn't caustic enough harm the finish either. There's only one trick to cleaning cast iron -- make sure it's completely dry.

Actually soap is designed to break down oil & grease so using it on cast iron will "eat away" at the oil molecules that bond to the little pores of the metal during seasoning (which make the pan non-stick). Salt crystals are too big to go into those microscopic pores where the oil sits... so although you lose a little bit of the protective layer, it's not as much as if you'd use dish soap.

I've never understood the 'cleaning with salt' thing. I have used cast iron since the late 90's and I wash them in soap and water with a stainless-steel scrubby and then a wash cloth. Then I put it on the burner to boil away the excess water, rub a little oil and finished. Sometimes it will require a re-seasoning but washing with soap and water is fine as long as there is no water remaining on the pan afterwards.

Question: I picked up an”old” cast iron frying pan from a flea market. It has a bunch of caked on gunk on the outside of the pan. A definite texture of funk. Any easy way to remove that? Ignore it? The inside is fine.

I do. When I'm done cooking. Let it mostly but not completely cool. Rub it out with the salt. But I rinse with water too. The salt will wear the patina down more than some water. And I put it back on the heat to fully dry before I put the oil on.

I saw a one star review on Amazon once for a cast iron pan. The reviewer said it was "too heavy" and sent it back. Duhh, it's CAST IRON.

easy to clean just scrub for 20 min with salt and 2 hours in the oven- spend more time cleaning than cooking

this guy has no clue what he's talking about. notice how many times he mentions "just getting" a cast iron pan if you don't believe me. or you can look at the mounds of rust under his pan if you need more proof. if you think this video has you ready to use a cast iron, you're not.

@@JP1989-l9h There are probably close to thousands of videos discussing how to take care of and clean cast iron... take your pick. Also, the dude above doesn't need to create a video in order to comment on a YT video from a major TV network, much less any video at all. If you disagree with him, say you disagree and say why. His comment is infinitely more productive than yours. Also - some of the videos about caring for cast iron are just wrong, there are many ways to take care of it (variations of cleaning, oil, etc.). That said, when a person has a bunch of rust on their cast iron, it's clear that they don't take care of that pan. It's also a bit concerning that the Food Network would post this showing that rust. Does it affect the cooking in the pan? Of course not if it's only on the bottom. But one shouldn't take cast iron tips from a person with a rusty cast iron skillet. While the salt thing does work for lightly soiled pans and I use it occasionally, using that much salt to clean the pan is not efficient if you use the pan daily. Salt's not expensive, but it's not cheap either.

I can't believe that the Food Network would put such bad advise on their website. Research cast iron care and avoid what this video tells you. I use cast iron every day that is 50 to 100 years old and I would never treat it like this guy tells you to.
