Day 10/30 of my Spring Cleaning Spree and things are starting to get a bit hairy! Today, we are cleaning out our sink’s drains and traps (and shower, if you’re feeling extra motivated!) Make sure to have a bucket when you’re taking care of the sink, and to double check after you’re done that you do not have any leaks once everything is back together. Im trying to help you clean, not cause more messes! This is a job that may be a bit much for anyone squeamish about hair, but I believe in you! This bit of maintenance will also save you in the long run from having to deal with clogged sinks and showers. Have a great night, from the Midwest!

Instead of all that pour borax down the pipe. It’s safe on all finishes and it destroys in hair or other crap in the pipe. You can buy a bottle of borax from a plumbing supply house

I've never met a plumber that would advise pouring boiling water down your drains. It could melt the PVC pipes, seals, and cause more damage.

It’s funny I was actually given the bowling water tip from a friend who is a plumber many years ago. If that is a concern the hottest setting on your tub faucet works too! 🙂

@@CleanThatUp the boiling water going down pvc pipes is true, you didn’t do it for the sink but did for the bath maybe it doesn’t have any occ piping? I wouldn’t know all my info is from the internet 😂

Plumbing & heating business owner here…I agree that you shouldn’t pour boiling water down drains but even more dangerous is pouring it into porcelain fixtures because it can cause them to crack. Your standard water heater is usually set to 140° F max but boiling water is approx. 212° F (depending on your location). If your bathroom is far enough away from your kitchen, it could cool enough by the time you get it there to not cause major damage, but straight from the stove in to the drain is not recommended. Even if you’ve done it before without causing a problem, you could be causing cumulative damage over time. Most pvc pipe isn’t rated for such high temperatures and the glued connections are even less tolerant.
@xorbe2
@xorbe2 4 месяца назад
A gallon of 100C water is NOT going to melt your drain, especially since it's only briefly. Excessively hot tap water does damage seals in faucets though -- but because it makes them super soft, and then mechanical valve action grinds the faucet seal much more easily.

Don't forget to plug the sink overflow and clean it also, use vinegar and baking soda, this overflow gets filled with schemoo from years of debris, use a long, small cleaning brush, do this while you have the drain stopper out, just reinstall the little rod and nut to prevent everything from leaking out of the stopper opening in the drain. This should help to prevent the sink from overflowing if someone leaves a cloth or something in the sink, also eliminates smells in the sink!
@MMA-watch-point
@MMA-watch-point Месяц назад
When dissasembling the ptrap go from the U of the P not the straight portion of the pipe, same thing when you reassemble, it'a better for the seal.

I’m a subscriber and really enjoy your videos but my husband and I own a plumbing and heating business and we’ve never even done this at our own home. It kind of seems like a recipe for disaster with people taking apart their pop up assembly and not being able to get it back together properly. I’m all for the baking soda and vinegar part, even encourage people to get one of those cheap little zip line drain cleaner things and pull out all of the hair from both drains but when people start taking apart plumbing, we usually get a call about how they can’t get it to stop leaking after they try to put it back together. People literally cross thread, put gaskets/washers in backwards, forget the gaskets/washers all together, over tighten, under tighten, etc. If it’s not draining slow or smelling bad, you’re probably best to leave it alone.

I think it depends on whether or not the homeowner is capable of doing this maintenance. We have three heads of very long thick hair living in our home (plus one short)... I do this yearly as a preventative measure to deter deeper clogs. It isn't hard, and was recommended by a plumber. He's missing a good wrap of plumbers tape around the threads, but otherwise explained the under-sink function fairly well.
@TammyD123
@TammyD123 Год назад
@@susienoseworthy947 I’d say in your case, it’s a good preventative measure. My warning was for the 75% of his viewers who most likely don’t have the mechanical skills to reconnect their pop-up assembly properly. You’d be surprised how many of our service calls include “I googled how to fix it” or “I watched a RU-vid video that said to …” which is why we are firm believers in “If it Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix It!”

I guess if your just trying to loosen stuff that works. Otherwise baking soda and vinegar neutralize each other and are worthless as cleaners after.

We have very hard water here. I have the same black fixtures all over my home. How would you recommend cleaning the scale and hard water off of the sink fixtures, shower heads, and drains without damaging the black finish?
@AmandaHugandKiss411
@AmandaHugandKiss411 5 месяцев назад
Purchase a squirt bottle that holds 1.5 litres and has an adjustable nossel. For extra hard water, use straight food grade vinegar, otherwise experience with a water to vinegar mixture that is effective to remove those white streaks. Vinegar is acidic. Mist your fixtures and after do not water to rinse, instead, use an absorbent soft dry cloth. Microfiber but any soft absorbent tea towel. For surprised guests showing up, keep a smaller spray bottle under your bathroom sink and paper towels or a soft face cloth to use as your drying cloth. Hope that helps. I would also go to a reputable store that sells this new trend for fixtures and ask them for information regarding cleaning and deep cleaning. Many more expensive stores have brochures and other literature on proper care.

Don't do what I did and stick a bristle brush down the drain to clean it without wearing a mask while recovering from a head cold. Now I'm to sick to clean anything else and got nasal polyps after doing this. It seems the castor oil is clearing them up and the potassium chloride is helping but I can't find my tea tree oil to breathe in, apparently that's supposed to help a lot.

@Manhandle730
@Manhandle730 Год назад
Sink drains are made to be easily disassembled. That’s why you don’t glue the pieces together when you install the system. If your pipes are so old and fragile that they break apart by even looking at them then it’s probably time for a new set up anyhow.

That stuff is crap and could burn through your pipes leaving you with a major repair being necessary. If you have never smelled the worst scent known to man you are in for a treat when this happens. It’s a combination of burning hair, rotting food, bacteria, burning pipe material (I’m my case it was cast iron) and other random chemicals. Then you set it all, even the burning hair, on fire. It was the only time I ever had a scent make me almost throw up.
