I literally stopped wearing makeup because of it... I love makeup! I love playing with it. But I literally have ignored makeup and avoided even watching videos because I just feel gross when I put it on.
Agreed. I spent over 4 years paying for dermatology visits and rx strength Ketoconazole that didnt work. I didnt realize the difference the shampoos made for our textured hair- especially Selsun Blue, my hair felt like sandpaper! I finally found a combination that has been working the past 5 weeks on my scalp and forehead, I'm hopeful it keeps working.
@@chantellebrinkley2943 I know you were asking Hibiscuss but I suffer from this as well. The Nizoral shampoo worked for me. I tried them all and that's the only thing that didn't dry my hair and skin out. You just have to be consistent. I'd use it every night on my face, lather it up and leave it on for about 5 minutes and rinse. For my scalp, I'd do it twice a week. Once I cleared it up, I used it once a week for maintenance. The prescription strength Ketoconazole the dermatologist gave me broke me out so bad, I think something in it, does not agree with my skin.
@@maryr1537 yes my daughter has it and the prescription strength medication made hers alot worse. Thanks for your recommendations on skin care routine..I will try it on my daughter.
I recommend Eucerin eczema cream for seb derm - it has licorice root for redness and piroctone olamine, which is an antifungal! It's been awesome for me
I've been suffering from severe seborrheic dermatitis around my moustache and beard chin area for many years now. It comes and goes like the wind and my doctor advised me to keep it clean and moisturized. This month (July 2023) I had the worst flare ever. I woke up and it was sore, super red and itchy. I was searching online what I could use to calm down this flare and maybe prevent future ones. Your video was a blessing. Thank you so much! ❤
@@Iamaj941 Hi. I was prescribed hydrocortisone topical creams, and to apply loads of hydration creams too. They didn't work. The Neutrogena product recommended in this video works very well and helps to prevent new flares. But it needs to be applied daily.

I had this for a while i thought it was an allergic reaction to a face mask i wore, googled it realised it was fungal, decided to treat it with Aloe Vera that i grew myself, its huge lol, i detached a frond , filleted it to remove all the gel, split it into 5 parts put four parts in the freezer, then with the last bit i diced it up added some water and liquidised it, put this solution all over my head , instantly it felt relieved, did the same procedure twice a day, its been a week or so now and the flaky raw skin has completely disappeared, no chemicals used , cost Zero...
@@johanna2690 aye, but its controlled now by washing whole head thoroughly with soap and water, then i aloe vera whole head, this stops it coming back mostly, but if i lapse or forget to do this it comes back, i also use apricot kernel oil which is high in vitamin A and E on any outbreaks, this seems to calm it down very quickly, fungus is really hard to get rid of, all hats pillowcases etc need to be cleaned more often too, hope this helps :)
I had it terribly on my eyebrows and sides of my nose and parts of my forehead.. It was really messing with my self esteem. I went to a dermatologist and he told me to use a shampoo daily to control it (for 30 days) and a cream to use daily for 2 months... He also gave me a list of safe products to use. I got la roche posay toleraine ultra night cream and the red patches and flakes from my face disappeared within the next day... The shampoo is very very drying to my hair but not to my scalp. So I am using it every other day to limit the side effects along with a scalp moisturizer from a brand called sebocalm. I opted not to use the cream because it contained a corticosteroid and it made me too nervous, but it seems that my face cleared up with just the moisturizer and shampoo.. hope someone may find this helpful..
@@sibu3554 Hey guys sad and sorry to report it did not get better. It came back. Dr. Dray is right. It's hit or miss. I am now trying almond oil to remove the flakes because that's the only thing that doesn't seem to be irritating. And then I try and shampoo with the agispor sparingly 1-2x a week. It's better than it was and my eyebrows havent acted up in a while. But yeah super frustrating.
Thank you for sharing. Do you experience eyebrow hairloss? I have lost so much density over the years with no regrowth. It is so frustrating and at times depressing. Shampoos and creams don't seem to help me, plus every shampoo I apply dries my skin out badly.

I just started having issues after my daughter was born. It has really done a number in my self esteem. My dermatologist prescribed the ketoconazole and hydrocortisone 50/50 mix for 2 weeks and it just didn’t really help a lot. I've been suffering from scalp irritation for years and the only thing that has helped calm down my flare ups is salicylic acid. Thank you so much for sharing this information; it has been a game changer.
I use the "Head & Shoulders for Seborrheic Dermatitis" on my face daily. When I get in the shower I apply it to the face first thing, then do my normal body wash and shampoo (though I do the H&S Seb Derm as a shampoo three times a week). Then I wash it off and go on with my day. Been doing this for a couple of years now and not had any problems and it's kept the Seb Derm at bay.

I was diagnosed with seb derm October of last year. My dermatologist proscribed my a 2% ketoconazole cream, and it helped with the discoloration that I was having around my mouth and chin area. I had another flare up that start in February of this year, and it’s still going. I have been trying everything I could find to help, but there isn’t very many thing I know about, because I’m still learning. I have never had to deal with anything like this before. I have never had problems with my skin, except for the occasional break out, so this was a really hard punch in the gut to my already low self esteem. This video was really helpful to me. Definitely going to try these products. Thank you for the tips!💜
Yes happened to me too- I had pretty good skin for college years, then a lot of awful stuff happened in my life and during that time of extreme stress I was blessed with this nonsense
Holy moly.. I think I’ve dealt with this… for years now… I’ve always been told I’ve had a dry scalp. Mentioning how stress can cause a flare up of this makes so much sense. For the past month I’ve started to get red scaly patches of this especially around my mouth/nose/cheeks area on my face. Last month my grandma passed away unexpectedly and a week ago one of my best friend’s passed away as well. Since then the amount of stress I’ve felt is overwhelming.. with that the patches on my face have gotten much worse and very irritated..
GIRL! Thank you so much for making this video. My area just got some extremely low temperatures that my body has never endured before, and all of a sudden I got red, itchy, and flaky around my nose. I thought I was breaking out with a rash or something, but watching this I've realized that I've had SD since elementary school. I am going to get these products that you mentioned, and hopefully this flare up will go away. Thanks again Dr. Dray!!!
My daughter has seborrheic dermatitis around her nose ( she just entered puberty ) and keeps on getting the scaly red inflamed patches. Thanks for this in-depth video and I'm so glad you give recommendations for real products to try, not just theoretical knowledge!
What has worked for me… Prescription topical steroids for 14 days helped me break the cycle. Then, 1. shampooing my hair with a dandruff control shampoo at least 3 times per week and using the same shampoo to wash my face and ears while in the shower (to prevent my hair from drying out due to this shampoo, I apply the shampoo of my choice after rinsing the dandruff shampoo off). Apply the conditioner of my choice only on the tips of the hair and rinse. Stay the minimum time in the shower and do not use very hot water. 2. Apply Carave face moisturizer on my damp face as soon as I step out of the shower (in fact I do this for the whole body but with a body Cerave moisturizer). 3. As I shower in the morning, I then also wash my face at night with the Cerave gentle wash and apply moisturizer the same way. Once I have the SD under control, I do not apply the shampoo to my face any more, only to the scalp, and only wash my face with cleanser at night and not in the shower. I hope this helps someone else. Cheers And thanks Dr Dray for the video!
I’m a black American so my skin tone is darker. It shows up on my face under my nose very prevalent as a much lighter shade. It messed with my confidence for a while. Once I started using the Z bar soap on my face it completely disappeared, the only caveat is I incorporate washing my face with the zinc soap every day (which you should have a skin care routine daily anyway). I hope this helps someone
Congradulations so many simular comments on this thread, I'm so white my skin is clear. lol but really I wish I was a bit dearker or had melotin in my DNA
I used a zinc pyrithione soap in my sebborheic dermatitis affected areas. I lathered it up and leave it for few minutes. Then I rinsed it off. And now I have clear skin. Thank you very much doctor. May Almighty bless you.
This seems like what I have. My face has been flaking for about 9 years now. Before this, for a number of years, I used to spend generally a couple hours a day in the sun/heat, then stopped. I noticed I started experiencing a flaky forehead, eyebrows, sides of nose, cheeks, along the edge of my face near my ears, but it's been by far much more prominent on my forehead/eyebrows than those other spots. So, because there were no other significant changes in lifestyle, logically I always figured it was lack of sun/vitamin D deficiency. Curious, I tested this theory a few times now. Every time I made an effort to get some sun, let's say 30+ mins at a time, the flaking would virtually disappear. The results were even better the more frequently during a week that I did this, as the effect (very little to no flaking at all) would last a few days after stopping sun exposure. In contrast, when I began again staying away from the sun for longer periods, the major flaking would return. So I think increasing my vitamin D, strengthening my body's natural defenses with nutrition, and overall having better self-care (improved personal hygiene, not being so isolated, properly managing stress/anxiety/depression, etc) would solve this issue for me. 😊
The same thing happened to me. During times when I was tanning or out in the sun every day for hours, my face cleared up. So I used a vitamin d supplement with 2000iu. Still have seborrheic dermatits 🙁
Me and my dad have this. I have my dad's scalp. I waited so long to see a dermatologist, and I recommend people just *go* and see someone sooner rather than later. It often starts with an itch for me, and some flaking. The redness comes later, but sometimes it's just bad from the get-go. You never can tell. Your tip about letting Head & Shoulders sit for a couple minutes has worked wonders though, for beginning SD (just the start of some flakes at the temples for instance). I immediately told my dad. Now we don't have to bust out the Nizoral 2% that often (it's expensive at about 14.25 euro regular price for 100ml). Thank you so much for sharing that tip with the world! :D
Hey! Which country do you live in? I just moved to Germany and the head and shoulders here didn't have zinc pyrithione in its ingredient list so I'm wondering if it's just Germany or all of EU?

I've suffered with SB for 25 yrs till I watched this video! Had been to dozens of dermatologists in several countries and nothing really worked... This simple method has kept me clean for 2 months (I was having flare ups every week) Salicylic acid is great! I'm combing the Neutrogena face wash with a Bioderma Sensibio DS+ cream during the day..... No more corticosteroids or strong medicines...My life has truly changed. Thanks a lot!
You don't need to use any products. Just wash your face 4 to 5 times a day (with cold water) and then gently scrub dry with a face cloth/flannel. Been doing this for 7 months & not had a flare up since.
I have it alllll over my body, my legs, arms, ofcourse my scalp and ears and just under my eyebrows. I take no birth control and I’ve been using head & shoulders forever and it still isn’t gone.
I'm in my early 70's and have had this my whole life. I'm also very sensitive to scents, even the unscented ones such as Avene and La Roche-posy moisturizers. I get a stuffy nose and headache. Occasionally I will use Cetaphil cleanser. I am using Free and Clear Medicated Shampoo.
Always so nice to hear Dr dray.. since i moved on to france i have a very bad problem with this.. scalp ... eyelashes and eyebrows... it is so embarrassing !!!
I got horrible seb derm on my scalp when i was 14, the same time I became allergic to dogs and nuts. Super thick scaley patches all over my scalp! It was horrible! My derm prescribed me all different topical drops to use, and various topical treatments to soften the scales. Nothing worked, except topical hydro cortisone 1% (scalpicin is the brand name) and Tsal shampoo! I’m now 20 and use the hydrocortisone drops 1x a week ish after showering and use the shampoo 2x a week. Did it every day until scales were gone. Took years to figure out what works for me but it was life changing!
I could cry. Thank you so much Dr. Dray! My 5 yo has been suffering with something and none of the derms we went to thought to tell me it was SD. we’ve been using Tgel and Tsal for over a year now and seen amazing results but her eyes, ears(canals and inner and behind), underarms, and groin are constant flairs. I haven’t been hitting those areas with any SA or other items you mentioned. Trying it all! Thank you!!! 🥹🥹
A bit late my dermatologist recommended me topical cream called desonide specifically for the ears. And this type of topical cream is also mentioned in this video. Maybe speak to your doctor or if dermatologist is available about this as a possible solution for these areas.
Thank you so much! Her scalp is our only remaining problem area thankfully. We’ve started treatment with a new steroid at a new derm and hoping that will address it. But pimecromelus(sp?) has been a huge life saver for her.
I went to a dermatologist and she prescribed me Triamcinolone Acetonide cream 0.1% and Ketoconazole cream 2%. You mix both creams together and apply to effected areas and it knocks it out very quickly. Usually one day and you cant see any irritation at all. I highly recommend going for a visit to get this combo. Also mix with the products Dr. Dray mentions and you have yourself a super plan to control this awful condition. Good luck all.
This is my regimen the past 5 weeks that have yielded visible SD results. I have textured hair and dark skin: Scalp: Once a week I use Head and Shoulders on the scalp. I let it sit while I do my regular shower stuff, rinse, then use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner on my hair so my hair doesn't dry out. Forehead: Daily wash my face with plain water. Use the psoriasis cream from dollar tree as a moisturizer daily. Its 2% salicylic acid. I also apply it to my hairline since thats where I tend to see the SD start flaking, before I feel anything itching. If I feel my scalp getting itchy or see white patches, I dab a little Fruit of The Earth 100% Aloe Vera Gel on the area. I also started taking caprylic acid to combat the candida overgrowth.
I flare up with this every autumn and through winter… The eyebrows and the nose wings, sometimes stretches to the cheeks… NOTHING has calmed it or got rid of it. Often, products causes burning sensations in those flaring areas. Makes my life a total misery clockwork. Within the next 30 days, it will start since we’re in September… Goodbye to makeup or hello “cakey porridge face”…. I find my SD actually flares more during the hotter months primarily because my oil production seems to amp up. I agree about Inkey List…..it has been a life saver. I use the sal cleanser to control the oil over the summer months but back off during the winter and use the hyaluronic cleanser. As for shampoos I had been using First Aid Beauty shampoo and sal acid serum combo but The Body Shop just released a new ginger shampoo ,conditioner and serum line that contains willow bark (which is a plant version of sal acid) and after several weeks of use I LOVE IT! It’s a really refreshing change from the atypical scents you get in dandruff shampoos and it does its job.
Interesting that most here have issues during warmer weather, mine flairs up pretty severely when it even starts getting cooler out. They really need to find a one and done solution for seb derm. Whether it’s some type of lazer skin therapy or an inhibitor of some type. Not to oversimplify this, but if we can place stents in hearts.. we should be able to find/cure a common skin condition like this.
I found the following helps my Seb Derm around my nose. -Drinking lots of water. -Not so hot shower’s. -Using Vaseline as a barrier/moisturizer in the night. - Selsin Blue on my hair on face. Really drying on the face though. - Zoryve prescription cream from Dermatologist. -Doxycycline antibiotic from dermatologist when really bad.
I met with a dermatologist for the first time yesterday after more than six years of struggling with this condition on my face. She prescribed me steroid cream and a non steroid cream to use for controlling the flare. I picked up prescriptions just to have available, but I want to use a holistic approach first. I had no idea and Im shocked this can be related to hair hygiene. I stopped washing my hair six years ago because I thought it was making me go bald. My hair is extremely short so I didn't think eliminating shampoo from my hygiene route could have created this problem. I also have an oily skin type. Reading all of this comments has me in tears because I felt like the only person that dealt with the very frustrating skin condition. Thank you so much Dr. Dray. This video and comment section has been so helpful. My journey to recovery starts today
I shaved my head completely skin bald. It cured it. Sunlight on the scalp kills the yeast that causes the flakes. It works . Along with turmeric powder and virgin coconut oil. Shave every 3 days and use the turmeric and coconut oil for a couple of months. Flake free!!
I’ve had seborrheic dermatitis, I’ve had it for years. I’m pregnant now and it’s been flaring lately. A combination of exfoliating combined with selenium Sulfide shampoo, eucerin cream, and aquaphor have helped. I also use occusoft eyelid scrub and hypochlorus acid on my eyelids when it flares on the eyelids. There is also a scrub for the eyelids meant for demodex that is also helpful. I find with the scalp products that I have to switch them up with each flare. What works one time may not work the next. Overall, loosening the scales first with some kind of exfoliating such as with salicylic acid, then going in with the treatment product seems to work best for me. I have used prescription steroid creams in the past but I’m unsure if they’re actually safe during pregnancy.
Hey! I know this is a little late. But I'm currently pregnant and my SD has flared up a lot. I never had it on my face before. But now I have spots all over my forehead and one side of my face. I just wanted to find out if it disappeared/reduced to pre-pregnancy levels once you delivered your child. I'm counting on that to be very honest.
What really helped me was Head & Shoulders clinical, but also I need to change active ingredients every 8 weeks or so. Neutrogena also makes T/Gel, which really helped me get control of a flare up.
The timing of this video is SO weird, I thought I just had irritation around my mouth but after 3 months it still wouldn’t budge so I started to do some more research and released I had dermatitis. I have been using Nizoral for the past 4 days and Azelaic acid on alternating days and it is pretty much almost cleared up. Thanks for this video!
Also consider using toothpaste without SLS it was a complete game changer for me. I used to have pretty bad perry oral dermatitis which meant irritated red flaky spots in the corners of my mouth, turns out it was a reaction to my toothpaste!
Ive delt with this on my scalp and face for the past 20 years. I use monistat vaginal yeast cream to keep my flair ups under control. HEY...... whatever stops the itching and burning.
Dr. Gray, you have no idea how happy I am that you uploaded an updated video on DS 😭😭😭 . I have had this condition for two years now and have managed to control it with A LOT of effort. I would like you to please make an updated video with products that we can use daily in those periods in which it is controlled and we must avoid products that can exacerbate it but at the same time take care of our skin. It would be good if you could recommend products that we could also find outside the US. Thank you very much!!!
This would help a lot! I find I can’t do much to my face to prevent a flare up (because so far what I wash with/cleanse with will dry out my skin and make more oil and then blow up into seb derm) and it would be great to have a way to stop flare ups from occuring
@@whiteshadow943 Hi there! Regarding the face cleansers, what works for me are two products: La Roche-Posay Toleriane for sensitive skin when my DS is under control, and when I see that something may flare up I use a little bit of Nizoral shampoo in those areas, just a couple of times and then come back to the Toleriane. The scalp is another story, it is more tricky to control it without dry out the hair :/
i had this for more than 10 years now. but i had it under control with only 3 products: 1.shower 2 or 3 times a week with Nizoral shampoo. 2. Use a cream like Advantan to calm down the inflamation. 3. And my personal favorite is BLUE CAP SPRAY (catalysis). After the shampoo or after washing the face, use the spray to the face area where the inflamation is. it will burn a little at the beggining but after a few minutes use the cream to let things work smoothly. Problem is that sometimes this is unpredictable and can cause irritation even bleeding sometimes if the procedure is not done sistematically. Hope it works, good luck.
I have rosacea and seb derm. I use nizoral shampoo 3 times per week along with the vanicream anti dandruff shampoo. Let both sit in my hair and my skin for 6 -8 mins each and let some of the suds from both shampoo sit on my face also. It’s really helped control it for me. My moisturise is the cerave in a tub and my sunscreen is Elta md uv clear. I use prescription metrogel at night also (sometimes use prescription fineca) depending on what my dermatologist has advised. My make up is tinted sunscreen Elta md uv elements. Hope this helps someone. 💜
D.S. Emulsion by Uriage is an incredible mosturizer for Seb derm as well, sometimes I use it on its own and it gets rids of the redness and the flakes and gets rid of the itching
The D.S. by Uriage, both the face wash and the moisturiser, were recommended to me after a visit to the dermatologist. For me the moisturiser is the only one that allows my skin to breathe after applying it since sometimes my skin feels so tight that I can't even smile or do any simple face gestures.
Ive been suffering from this for almost a year but now it has lessened thanks to this video. I experimented with alot of things but this is what I did. I have very sensitive skin. Use anti dandruff shampoo 2x a day and ketoconazole cream 2x a day. Yes it will sting at first because of the flaked skin but use it everyday because I healed my dermatitis I've been suffering for a year in just 2 weeks. Hope this helps! 😁
I have been suffering with this for 4 years now. I recently tried using pure shea butter after washing my face, and I was shocked to see how it keeps it in check. I'm not certain how, but it does it for me. I'm not saying this will work for everyone, but keeping my face moisturized with it has been a life saver.
I avoided sugar completely. By sugar i mean every thing related to sugar. Cake, sweets, cookies, sugar in the tea etc. And im free from it completely. It was very stressfull for the last one year when i had it and avoiding sugar helped alot. Even doctors wont say that it is bcs of sugar and will suggest you to use steroid shamboo or tar shamboo and salicylic acid. After applying salicylic acid your hair will be very dry and wont feel that good.Try avoiding sugar and it may help most of you guys.
Fungus feeds on sugar. When you make it starve that is when it goes away. Its really tough to avoid sugar.I have had this for 2 years now.I still try avoiding sugar as much as possible so atleast it doesn't itch and burn
This is literally the best video I found to date on the subject. Lots of videos are about "natural remedies", not realizing a lot of those oils they used actually make things worse for a lot of seborrheic dermatitis. I have Atopy, as well as my son. A genetic defect, the cause of our astma and tons of allergies. Most oils added to generic shampoos/treatments trigger contact allergies with us. Almond oil and tea tree oil are the worst.. I didn't know there were salicylic acid leave ons, which sound perfect for us. We can't shower or wash our skin/scalp often, because it increases our eczema and itchiness. I learned a lot from this video and I hope we can finally find something to control the flakes. Thank you so much! ☺️
Super helpful. Been suffering SB on my face for 7 years now. I have been using tip to toe baby body wash and baby lotion on my face until I found this video.
The best one that works is AsIAm the blue bottle. It works on your scalp, and face. It literally keeps the inflammation away without drying your hair and skin. Plus tea tree oil. I stopped wasting money on all those other products.
Coconut oil helps mine. I mean, REALLY helps! I put a dab on my hands and rub them together, then rub it all into my face, rubbing it on the sides of my nose and behind my ears real good. You don't have to put it on thick, in fact you can towel most of it off. Try it. It's cheap, natural, and smells great if you like the smell of coconut oil.
I think this is the best advice (alternating products) I've heard from someone, and it just goes to show how knowledgeable Dr. DRAY is😃 I've learnt this over the years, as I have chronic dandruff and I always noticed that whenever I switched products for dandruff (Zinc pyrithione to Ketoconazole to Neutrogena Neutar/Coal tar), all products work well for a few washes and the effect diminishes over time. After a while I started to alternate them and I realized that they all worked great then after
@@VeganMayhemSari that was aveeno not Avene. Aveeno is a American Brand owned by J&J and its formulae is based on collidal at meal while Avene is a French brand owned by Pierre Fabre Laboratories and it is based on Thermal Spring Water.
I have been on steroids for many years. They are really strong and highly encourage others to avoid them if possible. Will be trying the leave ons to see if it helps. Good luck everyone!
Very informative video. I think I am having this condition for the first time. I am 72 years old and I never have had it before. I am using a prescription shampoo, but I will be buying one or two of the products that Dr. Dray recommends
Hi guys , I hope this comment can help someone just as I was helped before , I am not a doctor or anything but I have been struggling with Seborrheic dermatitis for years now and I literally tried everything but sadly nothing worked😔 But ... a couple of months ago I started using donkey milk soap and let me tell you something, I have never in my whole life felt this good about my face and skin . I have been using donkey milk soap for four months now and I didn't have one outbreak and my skin feels great in so many ways Seriously I recommend it I mean it worked for me and I hope it can help someone else but please make sure that you don't have any kind of allergy or anything, and make sure to use moisturizer after using the soap 😉 😊 hope it helps
Thank you Dr Dray! This is a great video. I’ve been dealing with SD for almost 20 years now. Tried Rx’s and over the counter treatments, and it’s true that there is a lot of trial and error. I find that washing my scalp regularly and keeping it from getting too oily helps a lot. T Sal is nice and I find it to be gentle on my hair as well. Also I like Briogeo scalp scrub shampoo. It calms my SB down and isn’t too harsh.
The best shampoo I used was selson blue medicated shampoo and even put it on my face where my patches are and it clears up within a day or 2..it helped clear my scalp almost 100%
that's what works for me too but I find it makes my hair all scraggly and maybe fall out more, I want to try t/sal instead for a while to clear the scalp differently and unblock any hair follicles.
Selenium sulfide is the only thing I've found that works for me, and it was like magic. Zinc would make it less, but the selenium makes it go away completely.
I live in Finland and have STRUGGLED to get this sort of treatment advice from dermatologists or any medical professional. Thank you, thank you, oh jfc thank you!
Ainoa mikä oikeasti auttaa on seleenisulfidia sisältävät shampoot.
