If there isn't anything showing up in Terminal, get OmniDiskSweeper. Its a free app that you can download that will show you everything in your Mac that is taking up space. It showed that on my account, there was 980 GB being used, and the reason for it was all of my videos that I have made since 2017 lol. I deleted them when I finished making them, but for some reason they were still available. There's a bunch of folders from each day that I recorded, all distributed in other folders so its a bit tedious to look through everything, but it gets the job done! So if you make RU-vid videos, or import anything into your computer, they are probably still there, even if you have trashed it.

What if time machine local snapshots aren't the culprit? My system is now taking up 980 GB of storage. Thanks.

This video was very helpful! I use an external drive for my time machine backups. When reading on of the comments below, I thought that i would not try this because I use an external drive. But, instead I followed my first mind and I love the results! I had 12 time machine backups on my computer. I don't know why or how as I have been plugging in my external drive for the backup but it seems to default to my computer. Now my entire "other" section has been deleted! Thank you for the video Royal Tech!!

My system is currently using 140.55Gb of diskspace and I have never run Timemachine. The return from running that line says `sudo tmutil listlocalsnapshots / listlocalsnapshots: Unrecognized verb.` Is there any other way to cut this down? Macbook Pro 2012 15" w/Retina - 500Gb SSD

kevin davis the data on your systems hardrive is the local backups time machine does. Not the backups on the external drive. This is why so many are confused. Time machine doesn’t tell you anything about local backups which is dumb.
