A coil relocation paired with a tank lift is one of the best mods you can do aesthetically to your Harley. In this second video of the Tank Lift/Wire Tuck/Coil Relocation series, I show you how begin the wire tuck and relocate your coil between the heads on the left side of the engine.

Looks great, I definitely want to do this but not sure im confident to split and relocate the loom.. maybe start off with a couple of less invasive mods first

Thanks! I have a list ready and always have a couple of good friends I call on if stuck, just priced up the lift and relocation kits and its super reasonable even if I ship the parts over from DK customs, I’m still looking for a place here in the UK that does similar but not found anywhere yet, I have however found the led lights for the turn signals that just plug and play and I think they give a lot of bang for your buck

@GreatEgret

Thanks man! It’s really low for these two torx bolts. 10 - 13 ft/lbs (~14 - 17 Nm). Coincidentally I’m doing this on another Sportster this week.

Just did it to my 2016 Roadster you really don't need to take the tank off. Took me about 45 minutes to do.
@GreatEgret

I know, but it sure as hell made the full tank lift start to finish job easier. Plus the video on removing the tank is one of the most viewed on this channel. When you're shooting videos in the garage, it takes a hell of a lot longer to do the job. Speed is the last thing I'm thinking about. If you're just talking about the coil relocation, well yeah, you don't need to remove the tank. This video is part of a five video tank lift series.

Just a question does it matter which spark plug wire goes were .. ?? Will it malfunction if wires are put on wrong order as long as it fits
@GreatEgret
@GreatEgret 4 года назад
It does matter. The pistons need to fire in order and each are timed with a specific coil. Listen to the engine. That iconic potato potato potato sound are the pistons firing in the correct order. Mix them up and your timing will be off.

Thanks again, Tony! This series is the first that I've uploaded in "how to" style. Note that I said "uploaded." I've recorded a few in the past, but one thing or another technologically went wrong where uploading would do a disservice to anyone watching. I learned a lot doing these. For this one, I learned that I need to organize my garage because I'll have a lot more videos in the garage coming up. Looking forward to seeing what you've got coming up on Tuesday.

Hi, great to see you working on your mods yourself. I'm looking forward to do mods on my Iron, in a month or two. Just not sure if you did the right thing relocating this orange peace to the back of the mounting bracket. It looks to me as an heat isolation preventing coil from engine heat coming to it thorough the bracket. But I might be wrong. Good luck
@GreatEgret
@GreatEgret 6 лет назад
Thanks for watching! Hmm, I had it seated on the front and it was exposed on the outside. Which didn't look good seeing the orange. So seating it on the engine side made sense. I believe it actually is used for vibration dampening. The coils are protected from heat with its case. But if you've heard otherwise, please let me know. I'm man enough to admit I'm wrong. :-) Good luck with your mods and ride safe, my friend.
@pawelklaman1900
@pawelklaman1900 6 лет назад
Yes, I know what you mean, I'm not a mechanic myself and preparing to do some mods, so watching different movies to learn about it as much as I can before starting it. Just saw a Blockhead's movie ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7CVAifA7DVs.html (around 12 min) and got a bit confused about this thing, but no worries, I love your movies and admire work you do, drive safe yourself, cheers

I think you might be right on the typical position. Some DK Customs images show it on the outside. Here is an example: www.dkcustomproducts.com/07-up-coil-relocation-dk-cr-rlc07.htm#!prettyPhoto[media_gallery]/1/ . I don't really like that look and I don't think it will impact it negatively. So I think l'll keep it where it is. I'll keep you posted if I have any trouble. I might chat with DK customs too. Thanks for being so observant! Ride safe!

Kong Ee Lee is right , the orange insulator "silicone' is meant to be under the coil , not bracket , so coil wont cook. Dont like! the orange...plenty of silicone, coloured sheets , kitchen heat proof rubber out there , but must have the silicone on coil side , pretty hot near heads ( :
@GreatEgret
@GreatEgret 5 лет назад
There is so much heat generated by the engine. That tiny piece of silicone wont reduce or block any heat getting to the coils that are 10x the size. Harleys vibrate like crazy. It's to reduce vibrations. I put on 24K miles since this video was shot and zero heat has impacted the coils.

@GreatEgret 5 лет назад
Start to investigate, but start simply first. Is your bike in neutral when you try to start it? If yes and it still doesn't start. Look at your wiring and make sure everything is connected. Retrace your steps backwards to figure out where you may have gone wrong.

I don't understand the coil relocation. The coils are in a nice place compared to some bikes. I moved my coils under the tank on my Warrior because they were vertical and almost in front of the frame. I also don't understand lifting the tank. Why? I do understand moving the speedo to the side of the bike as the sun blocks viewing the digital part of the speedo.
@GreatEgret
@GreatEgret 4 года назад
The beautiful thing about sportys is you can mod it to your preference. If we all liked the same thing, this world would be a boring place. I cover "why" in two other videos. Check them out.
@exexpat11
@exexpat11 4 года назад
@@GreatEgret Totally understand modding. I guess some like seeing a big gap below the tank in the motor area. Less is more? Love my Roadster and it's 3.1 tank - if they made my tank 4 inches higher and made it a full 4 gallons that would be even better. Now that would be a lifted tank!

The raised tanks look stupid, not only that but heavily modifying your HD will reduce it's resale value

I have a video on tank lift opinions, why some guys like it, why some dont. Check it out. Two good things here: 1. This is my bike and not yours (whew!!) 2. I'm never selling this Sportster. We have been through WAY too many good times together (double whew!!). Thanks for casting your vote, even though it doesn't matter either way.
@exexpat11

I am not a fan of the look but there is a method to the madness. More cool air on the cylinders of an air cooled bike. Better performance and longevity. All mods can be returned to normal by the next owner if that is what they want. Next owner might be grateful they were made. An old Sportster, well ridden and maintained, used is going to sell for $5500 to $3000 after 5 to 7 years (inflation not factored in).
