In order to be eligible for Social Security benefits, you generally need to have worked and paid payroll taxes for at least 10 years. However, there are a few ways you can collect benefits even if you've never worked a day in your life. Watch the video to know more about those ways to be qualified!

I guess I don’t understand what it was that I was paying for 29 years so far in my life and what my parents paid their whole lives…cuz they’re paying for Medicare and receiving around $800-$900/ month each social security retirement…it’s costing them over $200 each per month for Medicare and it covers very little…and worked my whole life up until I became ill and received ssi which was only $580/month that I supported 2 kids with…we lived in squaller and the “welfare” myth is bs at least in rural areas…if u r in ssi, u do not get benefits for food etc but the kids do…I just wonder what the hell I was paying in to all those years…I worked 4 part time jobs at one point to be able to pay my bills cuz no one hires full time to keep from having to offer benefits etc….idk…confusing as all hell

Thank you so much for posting this video. I was wondering if you can help me with this: I used to live in the US but now I live in canada. I was married in Texas and my husband passed away in 1993. He was 60 years old and he had enough credits for Medicare and SS even though he was not collecting them at the time he died. I was only 31 at that time and so I was not eligible to collect his SS. I received a small death benefit. Now I am 61. Can I collect his SS? Would his SS credits pass on to me? I only have 29 credits and I’m considering returning to live in the US. Thank you so much!

I had work to be self sufficient. If you don't work 10 consecutive years and don't earn your 40 work credits YOUR SOL. My sister worked 4 yrs out her 67 yrs of life (she don't qualify for SS) and her and her husband didn't work most or any (50 yrs of their marriage) they were waiting for mom to die instead, embezzled from corpse/moms Federal Trust that is IRS TAX EMBEZZLEMENT CRIMES, they were AFTER caught, so in end they don't need SS after being charged as multi-tax felons from (corpse her own moms) Trust estate. estate. They now don't qualify for SNAP or SSI or MEDICAID. They took easy ride thru life, even if they had 40 work credits being a felon. felons

that website forSS will tell you.THE DETAIL SHE LEFT OUT IS THOSE 40 quarters or 10 years must be at a certain level.....right now 1500 a quarter,which is paying 15.4% to the SS system in that time....at 1500 a quarter there would be no other federal or state income taxes but you would owe about $225 a quarter....surely self employed you declared SOMETHING...I WOULD HOPE..Scrap iron guys,little farmers,little one-at-a time construction companies and non-filers BEWARE. Did you work for SSA recently? I was reading on Motley Fool it is not about earning in quarters, but in credits. So, for example, $1640/credit in 2023 and one can earn up to four credits a year. "Back in the day" it was about a minimum earning per quarter, I believe prior 1978. Regardless, I am in the learning process regarding these different kinds of credits. Wish me luck.

Social security retirement benefits and Medicare are insurance programs that you have to pay for. If you don’t pay, you don’t get the benefits no matter what age you are. Can you imagine walking into a car dealership when you get your drivers license and saying “I’m old enough to drive now I need a car so give me one?” 😂😂😂. So your 65 or 67 and you need money. Yeah, so? If you barely worked your whole life and you didn’t pay for the program, you don’t get anything. And SSI isn’t social security, it’s federal welfare. Workers are taxed and have their incomes redistributed into the general tax revenues to pay SSI to the indigent. It’s not a luxury product and won’t support anyone comfortably. Social security retirement reflects the work of the recipient-if you worked a lot and earned a lot, you get a big monthly check. If you worked a little and were a low earner, you get a little check. Why the surprise? And Social Security was not designed for retirees to live on : you have 5 decades of adult life to work and build a portfolio of stocks, bonds, mutual funds and real estate. Spouse’s double these investments for each other. If you didn’t support yourself before your 60’s, don’t think Social Security will after you turn 60.

You can't to qualify you have to work full time for 10 years even if you worked that much you lose points if you move away and don't pay in for 5 years the count starts over so even if you worked in the usa for 10 years then moved away for 5 you would need to start working g full time then put in another 10 years I have worked 26 years full time and have enough injuries to go for disability, still trying to keep working awhile since the amount they pay is not enough to survive on

I wonder how many people who never worked only to find out when they got old that they weren't getting a dime? Ouchie! Also if you only work 10 years you would qualify for Social Security but it would at most be a few hundred dollars a month. It wouldn't be much. You have to work at least 35 years to get anything substantial.

2:52 My sister has been declared handicapped such that federal student loans were forgiven. She was teaching at a school but can no longer do so because of health. SSDI told her that she cannot collect as she was 4 quarters short when her health reach a prohibitive point. Is there anything that she can do about this? I know she should be able to collect spousal SS when her husband retires, but he's 50 now and She's 58. This means she would have to wait 15 years to start collecting as a spouse at which time she will be 73 or 74 years of age.

Hello. So what if I worked and put money into social security for 29 years and then started working for my school district. When I retire, is there a penalty for not reaching 35 years?
@TheMedicareFamily
@TheMedicareFamily 2 года назад
To be eligible for Social Security retirement benefits, a worker born after 1928 must have accumulated at least 40 quarters of work in "covered employment". A "quarter of coverage" generally means the three-month calendar quarter. In addition, you must earn at least $1,510 in a quarter (in 2022) for it to count.
