Switching up your footwear can really create an interesting and fresh take on your regular suit, especially if you also change up a few accessories. Traditionally, business suits were solids or subtly textured in navy, charcoal, or gray, but these days, in many offices, a business suit is any suit, meaning a matching jacket and pants. First, let's start by taking a look at the different shoe and boot options for business suits, in general, and what rules and details you have to pay attention to, followed by an in-depth look into the different suit, boots, and shoe combinations. Of course, we cover the traditional ground but also a more contemporary ground and anything in between.
In general, business attire is a rather formal dress code and as such, you need formal shoes. That means your shoes or boot should be all leather with leather soles. You absolutely don't want to wear any trainers or sneakers with a business suit and also, not these kinds of oxford sneaker combinations with thick rubber soles.
Also, chunky thick double or triple leather soles are not appropriate for all business suits and neither are chunky rubber soles. It goes without
saying that you should avoid any kind of contrasting materials such as spectators either in leather fabric or maybe even cowhide.
In terms of the last, you want something that is classic and elongated, maybe with a rounded toe or a chisel toe but definitely no chunky square-looking toe boxes. In terms of colors and finishes, a classic box calf in black or other darker colors such as oxblood or maybe chocolate brown are your best bet. Avoid any crocodile or stingray leather or something like elephant because they're too exotic and maybe you can pull them off if you're the boss. If you're not, it's not the best option. If your office is a bit more relaxed and you want to add a dash of color, maybe
consider adding a pair of shoelaces in a different color because that really changes the look of your entire shoe combination.
In general, a shoe paired with formal business attire should cover the entire foot which means no loafers with a deep cut, for example, and when you wear a double-breasted suit, skip loafers altogether because they're too informal. If you live in a cold climate and you have a lot of snow in the winter, avoid wearing your really nice dress shoes directly to the office, maybe have them at the office or cover them up with rubber protectors or maybe you have a pair of lined winter boots that keep your feet toasty warm while heading to the office and just switching into your nice dress shoes there.
So in general, what are the footwear options you have for business suits? It all starts with the Oxford, of course, and Derbys. It doesn't matter if it's a cap toe, a semi brogue, quarter brogue, or full brogue, or a whole cut. These days, single and double monk strap shoes are also very office appropriate. In terms of boots, Chelsea boots, Balmoral boots, maybe even Jodhpur boots, and Button boots are all office appropriate. If you can just afford one pair of business dress shoes or boots, it should always be black.
On the other hand, if you have a navy, dark blue, medium gray, or charcoal suit, the black shoe would provide enough of a contrast that you can just get socks that are matching to the pants or something that's a little more contrasty and picks up the color of an accessory that you have, your shirt, your pocket square, or your tie.
If, for some reason, you're not a big fan of black, you can go with a dark chocolate brown, sometimes, in Italian, it's called testa di moro or a few shades lighter of a brown which still work and look dark. Nothing too reddish or tannish.
As a general rule, keep in mind that a pair of dress shoes will always be a little more formal than a pair of boots when combined with a business suit.

When the camera is off I'd expect the layout is something like this: Mr. Schneider would be 'drinking like a gentleman' with a Dean Martin sort of Charisma. Mr. Schlueter would be playing Bing Crosby loudly and singing along. Mr. Thibodeaux has a laser and is shaving his perfectly trimmed beard taking care not to have one hair out of place. I feel sorry for Mrs. Schneider who has to deal with these three absolute characters. P.S. - I wouldn't also be surprised if they have a weather station of the roof of the building to see when they all get to walk around the town wearing overcoats in the snow.

Here's a challenge. I like Western Boots (aka Cowboy boots). Since I live in the American Southwest I can get away with wearing them (not that living in other areas ever made any difference to me - I still wore them). I generally stick with Black or Brown and I shoe-polish any contrasting colored decorative stitching to match the leather. I wear the 'tube' under my pants and prefer an angled riding heel, and somewhat pointed toe. Clearly Western Boots are not a British thing, but I wondered if you have any thoughts - other than "DON"T DO IT!!!"
@ihavekalashnikovyoudomath9275
They honestly work the same as chelsea boots. The only difference is comfort, and getting pants that accommodate the shaft

Very important to keep in mind your wrist watch as part of your overall outfit, black cap toe Oxfords or wholecuts and G-Shocks don't go great together just as an A. Lange doesn't go great with Converse All Stars. Every time you pick new shoes it is advisable to also pick a watch that will compliment the shoes and vice versa.
@scottv781
@scottv781 4 года назад
Totally agree. I have a pretty decent watch collection (yes, it's relative), and I love coordinating my watch as I do any other accessory. When I buy new leather shoes, I usually find a matching belt (if I don't already have one) and...wait for it...a matching leather watch strap to complete the package. Perhaps I take the "match you leathers and metals" thing a little too far, but like you said, the watch can tie the outfit together, or look completely out of place. A watch can be dressed up or dressed down, depending on which strap is on the watch. Furthermore, a nice strap is less expensive than another watch. Watches are a hobby/habit that can escalate quickly!

@doroparker1702

@@Clarkson350 yes, of course. Do you always dump your shoes when they are wet? You know there is a very handy invention? Called plastic bag. You put in your outdoor boots and place the bag at a wardrobe if you spend an evening at opera or theatre. If you spend a day at the office you place the wet boots on some newspaper in a corner of your office. In the evening they are good to go home. Normal good quality boots can stand some nasty weather. When streets are flooded you need to wear wellington boots. Did you not grow up with different kind of boots? Should be common sense for an adult person or who are you?

Historically, cowboy boots are more formal because they're older than our current lounge suit. Cowboy boots with suits have been around way longer than wearing wristwatch or a trenchcoat with one. I do agree it's more common out in the country, but it's because a lot of people living in the country didn't buy automobiles until gas stations came around in the 20's and 30's. Cowboy boots are definitely more traditional in some parts of the U.S., with or without the horse.

Gentleman's Gazette I too wouldn’t wear boots intended for horseback riding with a suit. Those are too rugged looking, and intended for outdoor use. I would only wear boots with a suit that have leather soles, and not intended for outdoor use.
@gottfriedosterbach3907
@gottfriedosterbach3907 4 года назад
If jodhpur boots are on the list I would think the roper boot would not be off the list. Personally though, I would not have either paired with a suit unless you live in an environment where Western wear is more common. Historically, it just was not really something that was done before the fashion became about emulating movies. For business wear even a poor man pre 1900 would have gone with a Sunday best level if he did not possess an extensive wardrobe. I think the sentiment is appropriate. If you can picture mud and dung on the bottom from being in the field it is hardly something one would wear to a place of importance such as work or church. If you do wear Western clothing especially in areas it is more common the ropers will get plenty of use in more casual circumstances.
