Honestly, the way to do it is to JUST communicate!, you simply assume you understand and keep going, and if you do that enough you start realizing that words are secondary, the most important thing is the will to understand and to be understood 🌎
I’ve noticed that in general, many people are afraid to interact with locals when they travel ✈️ because they think they won't be able to express themselves, and I just want to encourage you to go out and try it!, just try to communicate, most people out there want to know you and share with you their culture and life ❤️ much more than you think.
