One thing I’ve learned about composting is that there is no “one size fits all” solution. Everyone has different circumstances and figures out what works for them. I’m glad you figured something out that you’re happy with. Good luck!

Looks very good. Hope you can do an update on your experience with this system this year, now that you've had it for two years (if it's still in use).

I's still in use, but is kinda falling apart. Good idea for a follow up vid!

I blend my kitchen scraps in water in the blender and pour them in dirt and cover

Very nice. The pillbugs and earwigs will get the job done.

That looks like a good idea Greg, if only I could convince the wife to put some of the weeds in the compost instead of feeding them all to the geese, it might be worth a try...

Hey bears and black flies here too! I tried vermicompost, I sadly think I cooked the worms. I have a green compost tumbler, bear proof but no worms. Put the bins in the shade?

you can composty bears with kitchen scraps perfectly fine

That is a great way to go! I can see how it works immediately. That might be a little tidier for town as well.

Not sure why you think this would be Bear proof, although it might slow them down. I have the same bins and the lids latch pretty good, but would not stop a determined bear if they smell rotting vegetables, but good luck. Vermicomposting is defined as using worms, so not really what you are doing if it is only incidental. I haven’t seen a set up quite like that so look forward to seeing if it works out.

The garden is surrounded by a fence and the only reason they would climb the fence woudl be if they could smell something good - but since its vermicomposting there should be no smell

Should break down just fine. I would love to see an update in the near future! (Month from now or so)

Your statement about putting the food scraps out and having the city take them away was a humorous juxtaposition as you said it standing in what looks like the middle of nowhere lol

That's funny. The house does back on to a wilderness area, but we do get our trash picked up. I'm about a 25 minute drive from the city, but here in NS you can go hunting just 5 minutes out of the city :) There's lots of wild land here

@@maritimegardening4887 I’ve driven through NB a few times and honestly it seems like everywhere is like that. It’s beautiful county but feels desolate.

Worth a try, hope you get satisfaction from it. Myself I have done hot composting the last year and this year so far along with a worm farm....see how long I continue over time.

Looks like a workable solution for the large 4 legged critters and once the worm population grows to match your waste output then you will be all set. It will be fun to see how well this works for you.

Looks good Greg...we are lucky in that the only pests that used to get into our compost was squirels - I stopped that with a mesh lid. Raccoons never seemed to bother with it to our knowledge. Bears are another story and there is no such thing as a bear proof compost! We have no bears in the area... Your idea will work just fine but quite possibly the worms will cook in there though - but only one way to find out! Thanks for the video! Mike 🇨🇦 🍁 👍

Yes - not sure if the worms will make it. Maybe I should put a white canvas tarp over it.

The worst pest I have messing with the kitchen compost is my dog. I do a lot of trench composting in the spring and late fall, which works to keep the dog and other animals away. But hey, you can't do that easily in Canadian winter :) I have two commercial compost bins which are very well ventilated by all the holes the rats chewed in them, but they make it easy to toss the stuff from the kitchen pail into on a regular basis. I do slow and lazy composting mostly. Your new method looks as though it will work. Good luck with it!

Any reason you're not doing bokashi instead? Same compost tea, and you keep it inside. Doesn't smell.
@maritimegardening4887
@maritimegardening4887 2 года назад
We generate about a gallon of kitchen waste every 2 days. Where would I put all that stuff inside? and bokashi does not break stuff down - you still have to take and dump it outside to compost - so why add the extra step?

lol u must be new to this. i bury all mine under the garden dirt where it rots. some times i get surprises. last year a few tiny pumpkins. year before that a few taters. i compost directly into the garden. little 2l ice cream tubs full emptied weekly here and there under the dirt, not huge big bins spreading smells for miles. DUH. yeah i could do electric fence make my own with 70 solar panels. but why? all the nutes my way go directly into the garden not seep out into the gravel ground every rain or rotting juice loss
@jay90374
@jay90374 2 года назад
That's just as much a PITA, If not the dog then it's racoons digging it up and spreading it everywhere, and on top of that there is never anything to amend lagging beds with unless you ship it in!

In my research on worm gaming I have found that food for worms is compost. I feed my worms compost or leaf Mold. From what I understand worms don’t eat banana peels they eat what eats banana peels.
