As a heads up for anyone confused the first part was an impression of a RU-vid chemist called "Nurd Rage..."
In this video I will show you how to concentrate rubbing alcohol with nothing more than Non-Iodized Table Salt and a Jar, hope you all like it :)

Thank you so much for this info and your demonstration. My mom is a resident at an assisted living facility. They are running very short of hand sanitizer. All I can find is 50% alcohol on the store shelves. They say at least 70% is needed to make home made sanitizer. Now because of your video, I can make them hand sanitizer if need be. Thank you so much. I have liked and subscribed to your channel.

Life As An Isopod Vodka or any other kind of liquor will only work if it’s 120 proof or higher. Very difficult to find in many states. In CA the highest I could find was 120 proof grain alcohol. They do make a 160 proof but you can’t buy it in my state. Some independent liquor distillers are now making hand sanitizer. I bought from Griffo distillery in Northern California. $20 for 2 4oz. Spray bottles with shipping. A little expensive but it’s made in the USA unlike junk being sold on Amazon right now that’s low quality. There’s another place in El Segundo CA that sells a gallon for about $50 too.

70% percent of alcohol is better than 90% for disinfecting. You should dilute the finished alcohol there with some purified water afterwards to make it about 70%. Pure alcohohol deactivates the virus but won't kill it. 70% will kill it. Pure alcohol coagulates protein in contact. Suppose the pure alcohol is poured over a single celled organism. The alcohol will go through the cell wall of the organism in all direction, coagulating the protein just inside the cell wall. The ring of the coagulated protein would then stop the alcohol from penetrating farther from the cell, and no more coagulation would take place. At this time the cell would become inactive but not dead. Under the favorable conditions the cell would then begin to function. If 70 percent of alcohol is poured to a single celled organism, the diluted alcohol also coagulates the protein, but at a slower rate, so that it penetrates all the way through the cell before coagulation can block it. Then the entire cell is coagulated and the organism dies.

Thanks a lot for the video man I appreciate the knowledge, with that being said I have one issue with this recipe. my finished product had salt in it and should not be used on most if not all surfaces, it leaves a thin layer of salt after the Alcohol dries up. I'm thinking in order to solve this I could filter the mix in hopes to reduce the amount left in it but even then this should only be used on the body and not on surfaces.
@TrollFaceTheMan
@TrollFaceTheMan 4 года назад
A small amount of salt will be left dissolved in the alchohol. To attempt to remove as much as possible if you put the alcohol in the freezer and let it cool it should help most precipitate out. Then filter with a coffee filter.

The voice was in impersonation of another RU-vidr called Nurdrage who does chemistry videos. In theory it might burn up quicker at higher concentrations because of it burning hotter which leads to more volatilization and again more intense and rapid burn. I can't tell you without testing. Sorry. Be careful as mentioned the alcohol will have slight salt residues when concentrated this way.

@bbaucom2
@bbaucom2 Год назад
@@Giovagab10 I know it has been a while. But, if you have access to distillation equipment, you can completely separate the alcohol from the salt with that. The simplest is a tube running through some cold water. Heat the alcohol and direct the vapors through the tube and then to a bottle. Pure alcohol collects (about 5% water, but no salt) in the collection bottle.

Great video, and I ready needed this info with the present-day pandemic at hand. I'm currently in a third world country with no rubbing alcohol (or even vodka) on the shelves ANY store. So I decided to start brewing. I wasn't looking forward to trying to build a distiller out of local materials, ESPECIALLY since all stoves run on propane. One tiny steam leak, and KaBamm!. I do have one question though. Fortunately, I had packed Kosher salt, but it's a limited supply (nope, they don't sell that here either). What is the easiest way to dry the salt afterwards in order to reuse it (BTW, no oven either, although I could stack bricks over a wood or charcoal fire to improvise one.)? Thanks.

You could use wood fire for heat or spreading it in a container with lots of surface area in sun if you have it.

When I attempted this; My solution remained foggy even 15 minutes after leaving to settle. The salt I used is not iodized. But, does contain calcium silicate. Could this be the cloudiness? I used 91% isopropyl. And am hoping the cloudiness settles as time goes by
@christianpederson7744
@christianpederson7744 5 лет назад
I discovered that by adding a bit of water, it worked perfectly. I wonder if the calcium silicate binds to the water, thus requiring more than 9% water to work.
@TrollFaceTheMan
@TrollFaceTheMan 5 лет назад
It's hard for the salt to remove water in concentrations more than 90%. You might be right the calcium might of dissolved into the little water that was there and you needed more water to help remove it.

Does this work with ETHANOL??? If so, I could make actual sanitizer with this, after distilling the alcohol from the salt. Since salt is a solid, and alcohol is a liquid, I should be able to make pure ethanol, without the salt. And this should be possible after only one distillation. Then I just add in whatever concentration of distilled water that I need, to make a 70 percent ethanol solution. A 70 percent solution is better to kill the virus with than a 100 percent solution, because it allows the alcohol more time to penetrate into the virus. While there are other things to wash your hands with besides ethanol, ethanol would be a preferred substance to decontaminate an otherwise disposable mask. This also involves a Mason jar, and the ethanol can be reused for this. But since some of it is soaked up into the mask, it eventually runs out. The mask is then set out to dry. Disposable masks like this can be decontaminated and reused, between 3 to 5 times. A Mason jar could also be used for the distillation process, if it is set in boiling water, and if copper pipe is run from the Mason jar to a condenser filled with ice. Normally alcohol boils at 180 degrees. And so setting the jar in water, which boils at 212 degrees, should be effective in regulating the temperature. Thank you for pointing out that the salt has to be non-iodized. That is probably why my experiment with methanol separation did not work. I will use kosher salt next time. And will be purchasing another bottle of HEET, to see if I can duplicate this. And if that works, my next experiment will be with a bottle of vodka. Great video! I liked your video, and subscribed to your channel.
@TrollFaceTheMan

Thanks for watching. What I know this won't work with ethanol without using a different type of salt. However it might be worth it for you to look into molecular sieves. They can be used to remove water then redried. You are correctly that lower concentrations can be more effective. Not only though from contact time but also to my understanding that it tricks the cells to let it inside of it when higher concentrations won't be able to.
