A key function of a network is to share resources. In Windows Server 2019, DNS is the technology that provides 'resolution'. DNS enables services & users to locate network resources. In this video we'll take a look at brief look at forward & reverse DNS lookup zones, and create a reverse lookup zone, using a Microsoft Windows 2019 server in the lab and test the configuration using the command line.

I am just very happy to be able to understand what the host is saying........It is very frustrating to try and follow someone using hybrid english (english words spoken to indian rhythm) which is now 90% of the IT videos. Also good video

As an Indian I apologize but those videos are made for Indian audiences . Because over here, each state's speak totally different language and the only way we can understand each other is through English. Hindi, even after being a common language in northern India, is not spoken or understood by many southerners including myself.

quick question, I need a Windows DNS Server to act as NS on internet interface, how can I setup a ALL SUBDOMAINS to forward to same public IP address on internet ?

I seem to have a bit of a quandary, The DNS Manager has 2 Domain Names fist is just the machine name Dragon-Studio the second is the machine + the FQDN. Would it be best to delete both and start anew? Before I forget very helpful video regarding DNS operations in Windows Server 2019, Thanks for all your hard work.

Hi Thanks for the video, I am using vmware and i cant find the trust points in DNS. May be because of that, I am not able to create lookup zone as well. Any solution for this?

Strange. I was just in the DNS config business when ITtaster offered this video. What a coincidence. Thanks! Just two questions: Is it good practice to config all that is DNS (forward, reverse) at one go? Do you always use the GUI; some people claim that server admins rarely use the GUI, but CLI - is that true? Thanks.

Hi, when Active Directory Domain Services is installed to for the first time, DNS (AD Integrated DNS) is also installed by default. A forward lookup zone for the active directory domain is created during this process. A reverse lookup zone isn't created automatically, however they are useful and more commonly used in larger network environments. GUI vs command line... Interesting question! I guess it depends on the sys admin and environment. I use a mixture of both, but I prefer to use a GUI when teaching server technology concepts.

@@ittaster Hi, Thanks for your reply. Yes, I have seen it in your video that the Active Directory Domain is configured in the AD DS and that requires DNS. However it better be a configured one and not an automatic setting, is that correct? We are pushed to use PowerShell instead of the GUI; scripts and cmdlets. Reasons: no GUI versions are installed in professional environments, scripts automate the sysadmin job. Your approach is perfect: I want the concepts and the whys. Sorry for writing too long.

Hi, PowerShell skills are very important, also coding skills too for automation of other technologies too. In terms of on premises servers in production environments, there are a lot of organisations out there that run GUIs (not always on the server) but in the form of admin tools on a management system. It's also important to be aware that some Windows server roles are not supported in non GUI server core (older versions more so). Many server based applications too also require GUI, therefore I would recommend taking the approach of learning both, and selecting the best tool for the task to be accomplished. @@ittaster Thanks for your reply. Yes, learning both tools is the way to go. Do you happen to have videos on managing sites with subnets in AD DS? I am a bit lost with dedicating subnet IPs and locations in the site manager function. Sorry, if I am being pushy with my questions. Happy new year.

Hi, the network address of your subnet will identify the network.

Thank You for all of your videos - have been very helpful in setting up a 2019 DC in my home. Here I get stuck. Working through many other things, I think that I have finally gotten to the end of the config. I have pfSense as my firewall, and it was my DNS and DHCP (for both IPv4 and IPv6) for more than a year. I now believe that I have ADDS, DNS and DHCP configured (v4 & v6) on my DC. Your videos and many others, immensely helpful. Before I moved to the DC, for all of this - I was able to be ping anything in my home with an address - and get its name. Most items had DHCP reservations on pfSense for them - I created those on my new server. They appear to be working, but pinging the name does not work, nor does NSLOOKUP (fwd or rev). Do I have to create all of these records? As things like my Smart Appliances and FireSticks do not have the 'ipconfig /registerdns' capability.

Hi, if you're using DHCP reservations on the Windows Server and scope options are assiging DNS to clients for AD integrated DNS server (other than a firewall blocking) you should be able to resolve Windows clients by FQDN.

after setting up AD i attempt to login to server 2022 remotely and it only connects via ip not the hostname, how can i resolve so it connects via both hostname of the dc domain aswell as ip address? isit a dns issue a reverse lookup reverse or something else? if i add entry into hosts file i can get it working but nslookup still dosnt return hostname from ip on the claint even with hosts file entry! i cant have a secondry dns on the client either as that breaks other connections!

Hi, for a client device to be able to resolve a host name via DNS it would need to be able to contact a DNS server with a record of the particular host (forward lookup). A manual entry to a hosts file provides local resolution. Performing an nslookup is querying a DNS server (default DNS server by default) not the hosts file.

What if the IPs are being ditributed by a router? How do you push PRT records to the Reverse Lookup Zone? There's only forward records in DNS.

Hi John, if deploying a Windows Server enterprise network. A Microsoft DHCP server and DNS would always be my preferred choice.
