at 9:20, you should be able to go to whatever line you want with gg or G. No subtraction needed. Imo it's easier to have the absolute values for line number, but you do you. Very useful video though, thanks!

Yeah you're right. But if you want to yank or delete form the current point relative number helps.

Would be cool to have both relative and absolute line numbers simultaneously. One for fast jumping via J/K and another one for fast jumping with :NUMBER and also for keeping track and telling in which line the bug is without moving cursor there. I've seen it done with plugins, but native capability would be useful.

I use the vim extension for VScode and I was just watching this oit of curiosity but Yanking directly into the clipboard.. I feel such an NPC for not thinking about that. Ya always got a video that helps me out massively, MO.

I can just enter insert mode and press Ctrl+Shift+V to paste from clipboard, like you would on a terminal.

Capital S is substitute line (delete the line and enter insert mode). Lower-case is substitute character (delete the character and enter insert mode). I don't use it much personally. I suppose if for whatever reason you found yourself replacing lines wholesale a lot then it'd be useful but I'd think that's pretty unusual. Whether I'm writing unstructured text or programming, rarely do I need to delete a line and start over, and if I do that's solvable with a quick 0C. Not the most horrible thing in the world. Edit: I had no idea S-Insert would paste from the system clipboard. I was always using "+p or "*p . Then I tried it, cringed and said "oh god that's awful, he's right, he's so right" and added that map. Thanks! :D When it comes to yanking to the system clipboard, why not try: set clipboard=unnamed,unnamedplus unnamedplus sends all yank, delete, change, and put operations to the X11 system clipboard (instead of "* ). If you do both like I have, then it'll yank, delete, etc to "* as well, so it's portable to MacOS and Windows. :)

old comment but can't you just ctrl + sht + v to paste from the system clipboard?
@liesdamnlies3372
@liesdamnlies3372 Год назад
@@Daniel-xu1xc By default, not really, no. At least you can't depend on it to work right since that will depend on your terminal emulator. Doing hand contortions to use those kinds of shortcuts are also pretty counter to how one works within vim anyway.

"nocompatible" doesn't do anything on Linux as it gets automatically set if you have a .vimrc file and start vim as "vim" (and not as "vi").
