Hello! Thanks for this video. I have a 2009 Sony home theater/DVD system and just bought a 2018 Samsung Smart TV (NU6900) and the ONLY ports the TV has are two HDMI ports (one regular, one ARC), a digital optical cable out, a LAN ethernet connection, a USB connection and an antenna in. That's IT. No old school RCA jacks, no S-video, nothing. SOOO....if I just use the HDMI ARC option and the digital optical, will that be enough? You said you don't NEED both the red/white jacks AND the optical but you'd only get stereo without the optical. But can you do JUST the optical and not the red/white ones? I also have a sound bar with L/R/C channels but I really want surround sound back. I haven't had it in two years since I ditched cable and went TiVo for antenna and streaming (I'll need the other HDMI port for that) and I miss it. I have an optical cable splitter on the way so I can connect both but I probably won't need the sound bar if I can get my home theater working! Can you advise me?
I've owned a Panasonic with a bluray- home theatre system since 2010 and to this day I am trying to figure out the optimum connection. The set top box (STB) has an htmi out. The tv has an htmi (ARC). I have the ARC TV OUT going to HTMI 1 in the bluray home theatre sound system. But in order to set up the STB, I have it going to HTMI 2 on the tv (The second HTMI) and the ROKU is in the HTMI 3 on the TV. The sound on the ROKU is considerably lower than the cable. What I can't wrap my head around is , since the STB appears to be bypassing the A/V, the sound does come through. I have choices like Movie, or Music, or Standard, but frankly, except for the speakers each choice chooses, there doesn't seem to be much different. 5.5 and 2.1, as well as 7.1 actually sound worse. Also the only way to adjust the home speaker system is going into the BluRay setting (vs. TV which is just white noise since I have a STB; and Home theatre (which is what I have called the HTMI). Does this all sound correct? Should the STB somehow go into the BluRay Theatre System? Or, does the ARC somehow "hear" the cable that is coming directly into HTMI2 and correct for optimum sound? As I say, I have attempted this for 8 years ... and I still see things like "Unconditional" when I attempt to change the setting for center, for example, or I get lots of sound from the side speakers, but low quality from the center. The instructions are so detailed they are extremely hard to follow and lots of asterisks, it depends, even though the system and tv were bundled. I know it isn't the highest quality sound system but one would think it would work okay. And, at the end of the day, the VIERA has never been set up correctly. I can get to the "SMART TV" window but still have to manually change my INPUT to get back from ROKU or the cable. And, now, since this is so obsolete there is no where anyone actually has info on how to make sure you have both the STB and the A/V bluray set up simultaneously. And, in fact, I can't remember the last time I played a DVD :-) Any input would be greatly appreciated.

if you plug the LG Home Theater into your tv to get the surround sound can it make the sound from other devices Like consoles have surround sound to work on hdtv too.
brian monk The easiest way to get the sound out from your Xbox and tv is to use a optical cable plug the optical cable to your tv and then run it to your surround sound receiver. After that connect your Xbox HDMI to your tv and then you should have the sound coming through. That's what I did

Could you please elaborate a little more about PCM and getting surround sound to work on Netflix,etc..? Also,FYI,I have DTV as my Dvr,and an RCA dvd surround sound, and Vizio smart tv, set on PCM.
James, check the audio setting of your RCA DVD surround and see if it's capable of "bitstream" and if so, enable that. See if the DTV can output bitstream and enable it too. Great question by the way, thank you for watching :)
