Thank you! I didn’t realize SSDs needed a power source! I got the Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD and of course it came with zero instructions. Thank you!!
It doesn’t work on the battery alone. The SSD needs its own power supply as the iphone is not capable of charging from the lightning port, like other phones can do via the type-C port.
Great little demo! Very helpful to help out my nephew who wanted to do this with his iPhone. The part he was missing was the external power supply via USB-C!
I appreciate the new EU law which forces Apple to use USB C. I hate lightning. It was better than micro USB but way worse than the universal USB C that supports all standards and everything.
OMGenius! Very helpful! Worked with M.2 in enclosure as well. Mine is a bit different but same idea from yours. Heard that M.2 need one with a DRAM, I'm using Cardea Z440 for this. U green enclosure. Dongle with USB A and USB C -> Type C to Type A adapter -> Another dongle that look like smaller version of your 5-in-1 OTG adapter -> iPhone SE 2020 Then power bank and M.2 plug into first dongle. Thanks for the tech tips! 😄
A demonstration of how to transfer large video files of 50 GB from iPhone 13 to ssd would be helpful. Many who use the iPhone to make videos are interested in freeing storage to shoot more video when in the field. How many minutes would it take to transfer 50 GB of video to ssd using the arrangement you described? Will the Samsung T7 handle files of that size?
I have a T7 and tried the USB C to lightning cable, why doesn't it just work as expected? Bit annoying having to use adaptors and power for the iphone to use it
Yea... it is disappointing Android phones with type-C port can do the reverse charging, meaning that the phone can charge another device via the type-C cable. This is necessary to power the SSD. On the other hand, the iPhones can reverse charge other devices because this is not possible via the lightning cable; that’s why you will have to power on the SSD by connecting it to a power bank. iPads have type-C ports that’s why you can transfer files easily. Hope this helps and thanks for watching! 👍🏻
Hello, thank you for this video! Can you do the same test with the crucial X10 SSD for the iPhone 13 pro? Because exactly the same way as with the Samsung in your video this SSD has a USB-C connection and I can't find the right cable for my iPhone 13 Pro Lightning, it works on iPad Pro and iPhone 15 because the connection is USB-C but many people find themselves in the forums because they can't connect this SSD to their iPhone !!! Tanks
Can we use original charging cable of iPhone 13 pro max to transfer data? For example transfer data to external SSD or vice versa. I tried it, it didn't work. So I bought Anker Powerline III Flow, tried to connect SSD to my iPhone 13 Pro Max, it didn''t show up as well. But the SSD showed up on my iPad using other cable. Can you advise me for this? Thanks
Hi I just tried with the original lightning cable plugged into the wall, the 5-in-1 OTG and the T7 SSD. It worked, i copied from the SSD to my 13 Pro. It is a bit slow, but it works.
@@UrReviewBuddy is the other way working too? I mean iphone 13 to SSD. I have to figure out which SSD works before buying. Thanks in advance for the help. I might try with T7
I did this exactly but with the Samsung T7 SSD 500 GB with my iPhone 13. However, it still doesn't show up. I used a regular flash drive and it works. Any ideas or tips? I want to be able to use with my Macbook and iPhone
@@beceby6391 I figured it out. All I did was buy a powered usb and connected the T7 to it. Then plug the usb hub with the lightning adapter to the iPhone and it worked. Hope this helps
Are you able to store a movie on the SSD and play it back on the iphone? would be great for traveling.. but dont want to redownload it to the phone from the ssd...possible?
Hi! Just got an SSD T7 just like yours, I formatted it on my MacBook with exFAT and it still says “requires too much power on my IPhone 13 Pro Max and on my IPad Air 3 as well. Is there anything else I need to do to make it work?
Hi. New subs here! 😊 i would like to ask which watt or mAh would last longer when your transfering ur files or backuping really big files . And which would u advice To use for the long run without having anyproblems
Would please would you please demonstrate how to make the video with the with the lightning cable or the lightning or did you adapter that’s from Apple because the one that you the cheap one is it has four has 444 different different interfaces so please bring a new video with the one with the lighting with the original lightning cable I don’t know how to make the original one
You can't do it direct from the iPhone. You have to use a laptop. Go to iTunes - select Back Up Now, then drag and drop the backup to the external drive.
Hi, I have the same set up and successfully transferred my video to Samsung T5. But I realized the time/date stamps are gone once transferred to SSD. Is there any way to keep the stamp?
It doesn’t work on the battery alone. The SSD needs its own power supply as the iphone is not capable of charging from the lightning port, like other phones can do via the type-C port.
Hi, You can connect it the same way i did and you can copy/paste photos if they are in the Files, not in the Gallery. So, when you open gallery, select the photos, click on ‘share’ and select ‘save to Files’. Then, find your photos on the Files and copy to the SSD. (Complicated, i know)…
Hi! You can transfer files from iPhone to SSD and from SSD to iPhone, works both ways. I found the Samsung T7 to be very reliable and fast, i am quite happy with its performance.
Unfortunately, this can’t be done and i’ll tell you why: Android phones with type-C port can do the reverse charging, meaning that the phone can charge another device via the type-C cable. 👍🏻
This method doesn’t seem to work with my sandisk extreme ssd. Makes me wonder if the Samsung would work, or if I just need an actual Apple adapter to do so. My goal was to use my iPhone to transfer footage from an sd card to an ssd while out in the field. So far it has been a pretty huge pain to even try to get to that point. I’m not sure that will even work. I have an adapter that has lightning, two sd card slots, and a usb 3.0 slot. I plugged everything in as you did here in the video and the ssd will still not show up on my iPhone.
Hi Eric, It should work regardless of the name of the SSD. It could be the case where the SSD needs to be formatted in a different way. I know Apple devices are quite fussy as to what format the hard drive has. I will try with different devices and let you know if they work or if it is only Samsung that works.
I can't get it to work on my Sandisk extreme 4TB SSD but I can with my Samsung T5 & T7 SSD drives. The cable and interface could do with an upgrade because the data is bottlenecked at a standard usb 3 connection. I have concluded that the Sandisk is not able to be used
thank you for this comment... I have 3 of these Extreme SSDs (they are awesome) and I was just about to buy the adapter to connect those to my iphone 14 pro. Now I will just stick to transfering to my Mac and then airdrop to iphone.
That's all very well, but I'm in Western Canada and apparently that 5 in 1 OTG Interface/toggle/converter what have you is like a unicorn, I cannot find a trusted source for it. Ebay has it but who knows if it's safe.
There is one listed on Amz CA Brand: Anytrox SD Card Reader USB Camera Adapter to iPhone,5 in 1 USB OTG Camera Connection Kits Adapter With Amz, you can return it if it doesn’t work.
thanks for the vid! lmao this is ridiculous arghh - wish it was all usb c!! would mean millions and millions less would be spent on all those converting adapters.
All of those cables are giving me a headache, i just dont understand why iphone cant have micro sd cards attached to them by simply providing a tray like any other normal phone, this is why i hate iphones and their stupidly expensive audio products
This sucks, I mean you buy a 1000 dollar phone can’t even connect a damn portable storage device without a bunch of other devices. Only if one android brand optimises well enough I’ll go for it, IOS and Iphones are expensive hostels or jail for pro users tbh.
It is a shame… i was so used to using the ssd on an Android phone… They should have switched to type-c port on iPhones when they’ve done it on the iPad. Or when the new design came out (iPhone X) and keep the lightning port for old designs (SE 2022). Maybe next year, unless they go portless (which is what they are testing with the lack of a sim tray on the US market).
