How to connect betaflight to PC simulator | Connect any transmitter to any sim

Connect any transmitter to a simulator with Betaflight! Even the cheap ones from rtf bundles will work as long as it runs betaflight and the receiver is powered.
Receivers sometimes work by USB, some times a battery must be plugged in to power it. I find tiny whoops preferable as the receiver is usually USB powered.
EDIT: This setting is present in Emuflight but I have not tested it. Should work though.
Any sim you can think of, liftoff, orqa fpv skydive, DRL sim etc can connect to any controller via betaflight, including: frisky taranis, qx7, x9d, x-lite or tinyhawk controller.
REQUIRES BETAFLIGHT 3.4 OR ABOVE
Get the configurator here: github.com/betaflight/betafli...
I used this gear in this video:
Tinyhawk: www.banggood.com/custlink/mDG...
Taranis QX7: www.banggood.com/custlink/vGG...

Every betaflight drone I've used it on has worked, you may need to turn the setting off again to fly normally, but I've never had to. As long as the receiver tab has inputs it should work.

@dingbatfpv
@dingbatfpv Год назад
I'm not sure the DJI mini controller will work the same way, this relies on using Betaflight, which is firmware flashed onto custom built drone flight controllers. In the video I'm connecting the drone itself to the configurator, and setting an option in the firmware. This allows it to act as a generic gamepad, passing through the controller inputs it receives.

When I go onto FPV Skydive it doesn't pick up any controller movements, plus now I cant get into BetaFlight as it says "Failed to open serial port". But i do know from before when I could get into BetaFlight that it was picking up the movements of my controller. Please help!

Do you have any other controllers or peripheral plugged in? Sometimes there is conflicts inside Orqa if you do. I've heard of that before with FC not being picked up in betaflight, usually if you unplug and replug it should pick up, of not there is something called impulse RC driver fixer that you should be able to run to fix. Let me know if it works/doesn't work.

I suppose it depends on which sim you are using. In the part where I am on the options menu, I can set throttle to be any axis I want just by toggling through. The liftoff sim has a configure menu that asks you to move the stick you want to use for each thing, I think DRL does something similar. If the sticks are "working" just not producing the desired output, the issue is with the software.

How do I disable usb_hid_cdc? After enabling it, I am unable to connect to BetaFlight as the COM port doesnt show up. But, yes I can play the simulator with the FlySky i6x joystick and FlightController (SkyStars HD F405).
@13thChip
@13thChip Год назад
The solution is this. @DinBat Good instructions but request you to please have a disclaimer for such operations or show how to come out of such modes. Else people will have to DFU their FC and reflash the firmware loosing all their flight controller configuration. 1. Connect the FC to USB. 2. Download and run zadig. Find the FC device (typically with STM in name). Replace the driver with USB Serial (CDC). 3. Find out the COM port in Wndows device manager. 4. Download and run putty. Connect to the COM port above. It will open a blank terminal window. 5. Type a ‘#’ character and the FC CLI shows up. 6. set usb_hid_cdc = off 7. save 8. Open betaflight configurator and reconnect.
@dingbatfpv
@dingbatfpv Год назад
I have never had to do this, in fact didn't even know you could 😯 I just connect to bf and set it to disabled. On my tiny hawk I didn't even need to it still worked fine for both flying and aim with it enabled. It must be something with how the flight controller chip is set up by the manufacturer?

I have had that happen and just reconnected and it's worked. It's also possible you could just click the drop down and select a different COM port and connect through that. Sometimes other devices can be on a COM port and betaflight gets confused. If it's still failing you could try closing betaflight, running the impulse RC driver fixer (a quick google away) then run betaflight and connect again.

This is how I tend to connect these days to a sim. I have an old F4 FC running customised 3.4 and an FrSky Rx in a little box. It is all powered by the USB to FC connection. Worth noting though that after some measurement it adds approximately 20mS latency when compared to a Taranis QX7 direct USB link.
@dingbatfpv
@dingbatfpv 3 года назад
I had wondered about latency. I think the flight feel is different enough in the sim that the extra 20ms is probably not so bad. It's definitely better than not using a sim. 😆
@edcbabc
@edcbabc 3 года назад
@@dingbatfpv there is an FrSky USB dongle. Never tried it but it might be better, less processing stages logically, anyway. But, as you say, it works. The overall delay from control movement to screen of 60 to 80mS probably isn't that different to the real thing.

Most transmitters have a usb port now that will direct connect and act like a game controller. You should be able to look on product pages and check this pretty easily, if not manufacturer support lines are a good shout. As far as I know modern Team black sheep and Radiomaster radios pretty much all have them but definitely double check.

@dingbatfpv
@dingbatfpv 3 года назад
If you are using a quad that doesn't power the receiver over USB then yes this is inconvenient. You can turn vtx power down to like 25mw to reduce heat production. This does work best with tiny whoop class drones as they use all in one boards that power everything except vtx via USB. I don't know about the jumper via USB if I'm honest, I would guess you need to switch a mode in the transmitter or install drivers to the pc.

If you aren't running Betaflight / Emuflight this might not work since the setting would not be there. Control link should not matter though, you just need to be able to see your stick inputs reflected in the receiver tab of the configurator. This means you need your receiver powered, while not all quads will power the receiver over USB, some FC boards have a specific 5v rail that is powered on USB that you can solder to. You may need to plug in a battery though. Whoops usually power everything except VTX by USB.

Underscores are in the command name instead of spaces. Also which sim are you using? Does it recognise a connected board? Orqa will recognise and list the flight controller even if the receiver isn't plugged in.

== Disclaimer == This tutorial makes assumptions and claims that are not true. 1) Assumption #1 - "Connect any transmitter to a simulator with Betaflight!" This statement assumes you have a drone. To the drone owners, this seems silly, but to people getting into the industry by starting with a simulator, and purchase a radio controller to do so, == this tutorial requires a drone == 2) Assumption #2 - "How to connect Betaflight to PC simulator" This statement says it will show you how to connect BetaFlight, yet the tutorial begins with "open BetaFlight" Again, the assumption is that the person watching has a drone available and it is connected. == this tutorial does not teach you how to connect BetaFlight == 3) Assumption #3 - The user knows to have a USB cable attached and/or has a USB cable to start with In their description they state " . . . Receivers sometimes work by USB . . ." This tutorial requires you to have a USB cable and have it connected. 4) Assumption #4 - "Connect any transmitter to any sim" After attempting to follow the directions, was still unable to connect Spektrum DXe to Velocidrone. This is an example where it is assumed that because the steps work for 1 set of gear and 1 setup process, it works for all. @AntlerFPV Whether you are showing someone how to connect a controller, or making a cup of coffee, there are certain and specific steps involved. That's why good tutorials start with "required hardware and software" as well as setting up the conditions to make the tutorial process work for the viewer. And, placing statements in your RU-vid titles that are untrue will be one reason why you don't get many followers. and to the haters that will certainly jump in here . . .
